In April 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology commissioned the Chinese Academy of Engineering to conduct research on major issues in the new materials industry. In December 2017, the Chinese Academy of Engineering formally launched a major consulting project, “Strategic Research on New Materials Power by 2035,” which aimed to create a top-level design for the development of China’s new materials industry, formulate a strategy for powering the country using new materials by 2035, and propose corresponding policies and measures. In addition, the academy aimed to provide suggestions for improving core competitiveness of the industry and the country’s independent innovation capability for new materials, while also providing theoretical support to the relevant departments for formulating industrial policies. Relying on the wisdom and strength of members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, well-known experts, and scientific researchers from China and abroad, the project focuses on advanced basic materials, key strategic materials, and cutting-edge new materials as well as the construction of platforms for the evaluation, characterization, and standards of new materials. During these two years, the project team researched and analyzed the domestic and foreign situations and development trends in the new materials industry; summarized the development status and existing problems of the new materials industry; proposed several development ideas, evaluation index systems, strategic goals, and development priorities; formulated a new material technology roadmap for the country; and devised strategic implementation paths and policy measures.
