Three-dimensional numerical modeling of single geocell-reinforced sand

Xiaoming YANG, Jie HAN, Robert L. PARSONS, Dov LESHCHINSKY,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 233-240 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0020-7

Abstract: This paper summarizes the development of a three-dimensional numerical model for analyzing single geocell-reinforced soil. In this model, the infill soil was modeled using the Duncan-Chang model, which can simulate non-linearity and stress-dependency of soil. Geocell was modeled using linearly elastic plate elements, which can carry both bending and membrane stresses. A linear interface stress-strain relationship with a Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion was adopted to model the interface friction between the geocell wall and the soil. By modeling the geocell and the soil separately, the interaction between the soil and the geocell can be accurately simulated. To verify this model, a plate load test was conducted in the laboratory, in which a 12-cm-thick sand layer reinforced by a single geocell was subjected to a vertical load from a circular steel plate. The load-displacement curves and the horizontal tensile strain of the geocell were recorded during the test. A numerical model was created according to the setup of the load test. The numerical results compared reasonably well with the test data.

Abstract: In this paper, 2D and 3D models of the dam together with the foundation and abutments were establishedIt was disclosed that the discharge fluxes obtained from 2D and 3D analyses are not similar, and thedischarge flux in 3D model is about four times that of the 2D model. Also, the 3D model locates the phreatic surface somewhat higher than the 2D model. This means that the 2D model estimates lower pore water pressure pattern in comparison with the 3D model

Visualization of force networks in 2D dense granular materials

Jianguo LIU, Qicheng SUN, Feng JIN,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 109-115 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0003-8

Abstract: Dense granular matter is a conglomeration of discrete solid and closely packed particles. As subjected to external loadings, the stress is largely transmitted by heavily stressed chains of particles forming a sparse network of larger contact forces. To understand the structure and evolution of force chains, a photoelastic technique was improved for determining stresses and strains in the assemblies of photoelastic granular disks in this paper. A two-dimensional vertical slab was designed. It contains 7200 polydispersed photoelastic disks and is subjected to a localized probe penetrating at the top of the slab to mimic the cone penetration test. The interparticle contact force distribution was found a peak around the mean value, a roughly exponential tail for greater force and a dip toward zero for smaller force. The force chain network around the probe tip was depicted, and the contact angle distribution of particles in force chains was found to be well aligned in the directions of major principal stress.

for the determination of vertically loaded pile-soil interface parameters in layered soil based on FLAC

Jiu-jiang WU,Yan LI,Qian-gong CHENG,Hua WEN,Xin LIANG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 103-111 doi: 10.1007/s11709-015-0328-4

Abstract: The numerical analysis of pile-soil interaction commonly requires a lot of trial works to determine the interface parameters and the accuracy cannot be ensured normally. Considering this, this paper first conducts a sensitivity analysis to figure out the influence of interface parameters on the bearing behavior of a single pile in sand. Then, a simplified method for the determination of pile-soil interface parameters in layered soil is proposed based on the parameter studies. Finally, a filed loading test is used for the validation of the simplified method, and the calculated results agree well with the monitoring data. In general, the simplified method proposed in this paper works with higher accuracy and consumes less time compared with the traditional trial works, especially on the determinations of interfacial cohesive and interfacial friction angle.
