Influence of axial load on the lateral pile groups response in cohesionless and cohesive soil

Abstract: The lateral response of single and group of piles under simultaneous vertical and lateral loads has been analyzed using a 3D finite element approach. The response in this assessment considered lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance and corresponding - curve. As a result, modified - curves for lateral single pile response were improved with respect to the influence of increasing axial load intensities. The improved plots can be used for lateral loaded pile design and to produce the group action design -multiplier curves and equations. The effect of load combination on the lateral pile group response was performed on three pile group configurations (i.e., 2×1, 2×2 and 3×2) with four pile spacings (i.e., = 2 , 4 , 6 and 8 ). As a result, design curves were developed and applied on the actual case studies and similar expected cases for assessment of pile group behavior using improved p-multiplier. A design equation was derived from predicted design curves to be used in the evaluation of the lateral pile group action taking into account the effect of axial load intensities. It was found that the group interaction effect led to reduced lateral resistance for the pile in the group relative to that for the single pile in case of pure lateral load. While, in case of simultaneous combined loads, large axial load intensities (i.e., more than 6 , where is lateral load values) will have an increase in -multiplier by approximately 100% and will consequently contribute to greater group piles capacities.

Abstract: Primary, secondary and tertiary amino-functionalized zirconia (ZrO2−NH2, ZrO2−NH and ZrO2−N) was synthesized by the postgrafting method for the adsorption removal of typical metallic ions, phosphate and total oxidizable carbon from a real H2O2 solution. ZrO2−NH2, ZrO2−NH and ZrO2−N exhibited similar pore sizes and sequentially increased zeta potentials. The adsorption results of single and binary simulated solutions showed that the removal efficiency increased in the order of Fe3+ > Al3+ > Ca2+ > Na+. There is competitive adsorption between metallic ions, and Fe3+ has an advantage over the other metals, with a removal efficiency of 90.7%. The coexisting phosphate could promote the adsorption of metallic ions, while total oxidizable carbon had no effect on adsorption. The adsorption results of the real H2O2 solution showed that ZrO2−NH2 exhibited the best adsorption affinity for metallic ions, as did phosphate and total oxidizable carbon, with a total adsorption capacity of 120.9 mg·g–1. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the adsorption process of metallic ions involves electron transfer from N atoms to metals and the formation of N-metal bonds.

Novel interpretable mechanism of neural networks based on network decoupling method

Abstract: The lack of interpretability of the neural network algorithm has become the bottleneck of its wide application. We propose a general mathematical framework, which couples the complex structure of the system with the nonlinear activation function to explore the decoupled dimension reduction method of high-dimensional system and reveal the calculation mechanism of the neural network. We apply our framework to some network models and a real system of the whole neuron map of Caenorhabditis elegans. Result shows that a simple linear mapping relationship exists between network structure and network behavior in the neural network with high-dimensional and nonlinear characteristics. Our simulation and theoretical results fully demonstrate this interesting phenomenon. Our new interpretation mechanism provides not only the potential mathematical calculation principle of neural network but also an effective way to accurately match and predict human brain or animal activities, which can further expand and enrich the interpretable mechanism of artificial neural network in the future.
