Barriers and countermeasures in developing traditional Chinese medicine in Europe

Yunfang Liu,Zhiping Yang,Jing Cheng,Daiming Fan

Frontiers of Medicine 2016, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 360-376 doi: 10.1007/s11684-016-0455-x

Abstract:

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the unique cultural treasures of Chinese; it represents a significant feature and prominent advantage of the healthcare cause in China. Data in this paper were from World Health Organization, Chinese Bureau of Statistics, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and PubMed. In recent years, TCM has established a solid foundation in Europe, which made great strides in legislation, education, research, and international exchange, and has enjoyed a vast development space in the continent. Now, TCM is embracing unprecedented development opportunities in Europe. At the same time, the stiff international competition poses a grave threat to China’s TCM industry. With multiple cultural, legal, and institutional challenges, as well as talent shortages in the way, TCM is now facing many difficulties in Europe. To fully prepare and enact active and vigorous steps to seize opportunities, we should have a clear picture about the serious challenges hampering TCM development in Europe. The TCM development at overseas markets has shifted from a spontaneous trade activity into a national strategy spearheaded by the government and participated in by multiple stakeholders. We should make a systematic, comprehensive, and sustainable push in fields such as TCM therapy, healthcare, education, research, culture, and industry development. The ultimate goal is to bring TCMs to the global market and allow them to play a role in safeguarding public health along with modern medicines.

Constraints for Sustainable Land Use in China and Countermeasures

Li Boheng

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 9,   Pages 7-12

Abstract:

Large population, limited land resources and environmental pollution are the main constraints for sustainable land use in China. It is an ambitious goal of the new millennium to monitor land use dynamically with remote sensing technology, enhance management of primary agricultural land, build gardening and ecologically sound agricultural conditions, and to achieve dynamic balance of total agricultural land areas in China.

Patent Analysis on Recirculating Aquaculture System between Home and Abroad and Countermeasures for China

Sun Longqi and Liu Hui

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 3,   Pages 115-120 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.03.020

Abstract:

Based on patent retrieval and analysis with the Thomson Innovation (TI) database, the international development trend of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is investigated. The current international research and development focus for RAS are purification technology, aquarium structure, water temperature control, and biological filters and filter devices. Meanwhile, China has focused on fish tank and pond design, biological filters, RAS devices, oxygen supply and motor shaft, etc. Though some of the international research focus in RAS are new for China, the number of Chinese patents is greater than the international average and has grown rapidly in recent years, indicating a positive developmental trend in the near future. This paper provides recommendations for improving efficiency, quality, safety, and environmental protection of sustainable aquaculture as well as further measures for the development of RAS in China.

Bottlenecks and countermeasures of high-penetration renewable energy development in china Feature article

Jizhen Liu, Qinghua Wang, Ziqiu Song, Fang Fang

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 11,   Pages 1611-1622 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2020.08.016

Abstract:

China has become the world’s largest producer and consumer of energy, and ranks first in its wind and solar power installation capacity. However, increasingly serious wind and solar curtailment in China has significantly hindered the development and utilization of renewable energy. To address problems in the consumption of renewable energy, this paper analyzes four key factors affecting the capacity of power generated from renewable energy sources: power balance, power regulation performance, transmission capacity, and load level. Focusing on these bottlenecks, we propose seven solutions: centralized and distributed development of renewable energy, improving the peak-load regulation flexibility of thermal power, increasing the proportion of gas turbines and pumped-hydropower storage, construction of transmission channels and a flexible smart grid developing demand response and virtual power plants, adopting new energy active support and energy storage, and establishing appropriate policies and market mechanisms. The Chinese government and energy authorities have issued a series of policies and measures, and in the past three years, China has had remarkable achievements in the adoption of renewable energy. The rate of idle wind capacity decreased from 17% in 2016 to 7% in 2018, and that of solar decreased from 10% in 2016 to 3% in 2018.

Analysis and Countermeasures for the Status Quo of the Recycling and Utilization of End-of-Life Vehicles

Chen Yuanhua,Yang Yanping,Hu Shuhan,Xie Linming,Yang Yang,Huang Wei and Chen Zhilin

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 1,   Pages 113-119 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.01.016

Abstract:

This work discusses the importance of improving the recycling and utilization of end-of-life vehicles through three perspectives that include resource saving, environmental protection, and transportation safety. It then analyzes the situation of recycling and utilizing end-of-life vehicles by using the recycle rate of end-of-life vehicles and their dismantling ability, as well as the administrative regulations and supervising system. Based on this analysis, we propose an ecologically beneficial evaluation model for the recycling and utilization of end-of-life vehicles to solve the existing problem.

SARS-CoV-2 variants, immune escape, and countermeasures

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 2,   Pages 196-207 doi: 10.1007/s11684-021-0906-x

Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic disease. SARS-CoV-2 variants have aroused great concern and are expected to continue spreading. Although many countries have promoted roll-out vaccination, the immune barrier has not yet been fully established, indicating that populations remain susceptible to infection. In this review, we summarize the literature on variants of concern and focus on the changes in their transmissibility, pathogenicity, and resistance to the immunity constructed by current vaccines. Furthermore, we analyzed relationships between variants and breakthrough infections, as well as the paradigm of new variants in countries with high vaccination rates. Terminating transmission, continuing to strengthen variant surveillance, and combining nonpharmaceutical intervention measures and vaccines are necessary to control these variants.
