Foundations bearing capacity subjected to seepage by the kinematic approach of the limit analysis

Mehdi VEISKARAMI, Ghasem HABIBAGAHI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2013, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 446-455 doi: 10.1007/s11709-013-0227-5

Abstract: An estimate of the ultimate load on foundations on soil layers subject to groundwater flow has been presented. The kinematic approach of the limit analysis was employed to find the upper-bound limit of the bearing capacity. Both smooth and rough base strip foundations were considered associated with different collapse patterns. Presence of the groundwater flow leads to a non-symmetric collapse pattern, i.e., a weak side and a strong side in two-sided collapse patterns, depending on the direction of the flow. It was found that the bearing capacity has a decreasing trend with increase in the groundwater flow gradient and hence, a reduction factor has been introduced to the third term in the bearing capacity equation as a function of the flow gradient.

Analytical model and finite element computation of braking torque in electromagnetic retarder

Lezhi YE,Guangzhao YANG,Desheng LI

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2014, Volume 9, Issue 4,   Pages 368-379 doi: 10.1007/s11465-014-0314-x

Abstract:

An analytical model has been developed for analyzing the braking torque in electromagnetic retarder by flux tube and armature reaction method. The magnetic field distribution in air gap, the eddy current induced in the rotor and the braking torque are calculated by the developed model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element models for retarder have also been developed. Results from the analytical model are compared with those from finite element models. The validity of these three models is checked by the comparison of the theoretical predictions and the measurements from an experimental prototype. The influencing factors of braking torque have been studied.

Information gathering and processing with fluorescent molecules

Brian DALY,Jue LING,A. Prasanna de SILVA

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 240-251 doi: 10.1007/s11705-014-1432-z

Abstract: Molecular information gathering and processing — a young field of applied chemistry — is undergoing good growth. The progress is occurring both in terms of conceptual development and in terms of the strengthening of older concepts with new examples. This review critically surveys these two broad avenues. We consider some cases where molecules emulate one of the building blocks of electronic logic gates. We then examine molecular emulation of various Boolean logic gates carrying one, two or three inputs. Some single-input gates are popular information gathering devices. Special systems, such as ‘lab-on-a-molecule’ and molecular keypad locks, also receive attention. A situation deviating from the Boolean blueprint is also discussed. Some pointers are offered for maintaining the upward curve of the field.
