Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 267-275 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0035-0

Abstract: Discrete element method (DEM) was developed to simulate the corn-shaped particles flow in the hopper. The corn-shaped particle was described by four overlapping spheres. Contact force and gravity force were considered when establishing the model. In addition, flowing characteristic of particles in the hopper was studied. The effect of friction coefficient on the wall pressure, voidage and velocity distribution was analyzed. The results show that the discharge rate decreases with the friction coefficient increasing; and the “over-pressure” phenomenon occurs in the discharging process for two different friction coefficients. The voidage also increases as the friction coefficient increasing. And the velocity distribution is more uniformity and is closer to the mass flow with the friction coefficient deceasing.

Experimental study of heat transfer coefficient with rectangular baffle fin of solar air heater

Foued CHABANE,Nesrine HATRAF,Noureddine MOUMMI

Frontiers in Energy 2014, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 160-172 doi: 10.1007/s11708-014-0321-y

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental analysis of a single pass solar air collector with, and without using baffle fin. The heat transfer coefficient between the absorber plate and air can be considerably increased by using artificial roughness on the bottom plate and under the absorber plate of a solar air heater duct. An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effect of roughness and operating parameters on heat transfer. The investigation has covered the range of Reynolds number from 1259 to 2517 depending on types of the configuration of the solar collectors. Based on the experimental data, values of Nusselt number have been determined for different values of configurations and operating parameters. To determine the enhancement in heat transfer and increment in thermal efficiency, the values of Nusselt have been compared with those of smooth duct under similar flow conditions.

Slender reinforced concrete shear walls with high-strength concrete boundary elements

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 1,   Pages 138-151 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0897-y

Abstract: Reinforced concrete structural walls are commonly used for resisting lateral forces in buildings. Owing to the advancements in the field of concrete materials over the past few decades, concrete mixes of high compressive strength, commonly referred to as high-strength concrete (HSC), have been developed. In this study, the effects of strategic placement of HSC on the performance of slender walls were examined. The finite-element model of a conventional normal-strength concrete (NSC) prototype wall was validated using test data available in extant studies. HSC was incorporated in the boundary elements of the wall to compare its performance with that of the conventional wall at different axial loads. Potential reductions in the reinforcement area and size of the boundary elements were investigated. The HSC wall exhibited improved strength and stiffness, and thereby, allowed reduction in the longitudinal reinforcement area and size of the boundary elements for the same strength of the conventional wall. Cold joints resulting from dissimilar concrete pours in the web and boundary elements of the HSC wall were modeled and their impact on behavior of the wall was examined.
