Features of seismic hazard in large dam projects and strong motion monitoring of large dams

Martin WIELAND,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 56-64 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0005-6

Abstract: Earthquakes can affect large dam projects in many different ways. Usually, design engineers are focussing on ground shaking and neglect the other aspects. The May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake has damaged 1803 dams and reservoirs, and 403 hydropower plants with an installed capacity of 3.3GW. Among these dams were the 132-m-high Shapai RCC arch dam and the 156-m-high Zipingpu concrete face rockfill dam. These recently completed dams are dam types which, up to now, have not experienced strong ground shaking. The widespread mass movements have caused substantial damage to dams and surface powerhouses in Sichuan. The different features of earthquake hazard are presented, i.e., ground shaking, faulting and mass movements. It is proposed to prepare project-specific safety plans for all dams, which consist of a matrix where the possible hazards and the corresponding countermeasures are listed. The earthquake behaviors of the Sefid Rud, Zipingpu and Shapai dams, which, in the past, have experienced strong ground shaking from nearby earthquakes, are discussed. Finally, the need for strong motion instrumentation of large dams is discussed. It is proposed that major dams with large damage potential, dams located in areas of high seismicity, and dams showing signs of abnormal behavior be equipped with strong motion instruments.

Chemically triggered life control of “smart” hydrogels through click and declick reactions

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 1399-1406 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2149-z

Abstract: The degradation of polymeric materials is recognized as one of the goals to be fulfilled for the sustainable economy. In this study, a novel methodology was presented to synthesize multiple highly cross-linked polymers (i.e., hydrogels) through amine–thiol scrambling under mild conditions. Amine-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-NH2) was reacted with the representative conjugate acceptors to synthesize hydrogels in organic and aqueous solutions, respectively. The materials above exhibited high water-swelling properties, distributed porous structures, as well as prominent mechanical strengths. It is noteworthy that the mentioned hydrogels could be degraded efficiently in hours to release the original coupling partner, which were induced by ethylene diamine at ambient temperature through amine-amine metathesis. The recovered PEG-NH2 reagent could be employed again to regenerate hydrogels. Due to the multiple architectures and functions in polymeric synthesis, degradation and regeneration, a new generation of “smart” materials is revealed.

Immune response triggered by the ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma with nanosecond pulsed electric

Frontiers of Medicine 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 170-177 doi: 10.1007/s11684-020-0747-z

Abstract: Nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) is a novel, nonthermal, and minimally invasive modality that can ablate solid tumors by inducing apoptosis. Recent animal experiments show that nsPEF can induce the immunogenic cell death of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and stimulate the host’s immune response to kill residual tumor cells and decrease distant metastatic tumors. nsPEF-induced immunity is of great clinical importance because the nonthermal ablation may enhance the immune memory, which can prevent HCC recurrence and metastasis. This review summarized the most advanced research on the effect of nsPEF. The possible mechanisms of how locoregional nsPEF ablation enhances the systemic anticancer immune responses were illustrated. nsPEF stimulates the host immune system to boost stimulation and prevail suppression. Also, nsPEF increases the dendritic cell loading and inhibits the regulatory responses, thereby improving immune stimulation and limiting immunosuppression in HCC-bearing hosts. Therefore, nsPEF has excellent potential for HCC treatment.

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 330-339 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-1929-6

Abstract: This study focuses on the synthesis of new liquid aromatic bismaleimide monomers in order to improve self-curing on demand (SCOD) systems previously based on aliphatic bismaleimides. These SCOD systems are based on Diels-Alder (DA)/retro-DA reactions. The syntheses of new different aromatic bismaleimides with ester and amide bonds are presented. These maleimides have been protected using DA reaction and characterized by H NMR analysis to determine protection rate and diastereomer ratios. The retro-DA reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic DA adducts in presence of thiol molecules were studied. Kinetic analysis was monitored by H NMR and compared to model study. Finally, both aromatic and aliphatic bismaleimides-based polymers were synthesized with 2-mercaptoethyl ether and thermal properties of polymers were compared. The glass transition temperature values ranged from –20 °C to 14 °C and very good thermal stabilities were observed (up to 300 °C).
