Frontiers in Energy 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 440-445 doi: 10.1007/s11708-009-0051-8

Abstract: The core objective to optimize a complex energy system is to set the reference target to guide the parameter adjustment of system operation. In this paper, a new case-based approach is proposed based on an online performance assessment program and its long-term operation data for a large power unit. The online model of a coal-fired power unit’s performance assessment is demonstrated, and the distribution pattern of the performance index is revealed by statistical analysis of the abundant data. The fundamental issues (representation of the similarity of two thermal processes, similarity measure, etc.) are tackled. The key sections and key parameters for the completion of similarity determination are proposed, which are essential to realize a case-based strategy. A full-scope simulator of power unit is used to test the availability of the method. The advantage of the case-based approach is the integrality of information over other methods.

Major Technologies for Safe Construction of High Earth-Rockfill Dams

Hongqi Ma, Fudong Chi

Engineering 2016, Volume 2, Issue 4,   Pages 498-509 doi: 10.1016/J.ENG.2016.04.001

Abstract:

The earth-rockfill dam is one of the primary dam types in the selection of high dams to be constructed in Western China, since it is characterized by favorable adaptability of the dam foundation; full utilization of local earth, rock, and building-excavated materials; low construction cost; and low cement consumption. Many major technical issues regarding earth-rockfill dams with a height of over 250 m were studied and solved successfully in the construction of the 261.5 m Nuozhadu earth core rockfill dam. This paper describes research achievements and basic conclusions; systematically summarizes the accumulated experiences from the construction of the Nuozhadu Dam and other high earth-rockfill dams; and discusses major technical issues, such as deformation control, seepage control, dam slope stability, safety and control of flood discharging, safety and quality control of dam construction, safety assessments, early warning, and other key technical difficulties. This study also provides a reference and technological support for the future construction of 300 m high earth-rockfill dams.

Homoharringtonine is a safe and effective substitute for anthracyclines in children younger than 2 years

Xiaoxiao Chen, Yanjing Tang, Jing Chen, Ru Chen, Longjun Gu, Huiliang Xue, Ci Pan, Jingyan Tang, Shuhong Shen

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 3,   Pages 378-387 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0658-4

Abstract: Homoharringtonine (HHT), a plant alkaloid from , exhibits a unique anticancer mechanism and has been widely used in China to treat patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) since the 1970s. Trial SCMC-AML-2009 presented herein was a randomized clinical study designed based on our previous findings that pediatric AML patients younger than two years old may benefit from HHT-containing chemotherapy regimens. Patients randomized to arm A were treated with a standard chemotherapy regimen comprising mainly of anthracyclines and cytarabine (Ara-C), whereas patients in arm B were treated with HHT-containing regimens in which anthracyclines in all but the initial induction therapy were replaced by HHT. From February 2009 to November 2015, 59 patients less than 2 years old with AML (other than acute promyelocytic leukemia) were recruited. A total of 42 patients achieved a morphologic complete remission (CR) after the first course, with similar rates in both arms (70.6% vs.72.0%). At the end of the follow-up period, 40 patients remained in CR and 5 patients underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in CR, which could not be considered as events but censors. The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) was 60.2%±9.6% for arm A and 88.0%±6.5% for arm B ( =0.024). Patients in arm B experienced shorter durations of leukopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia and had a lower risk of infection during consolidation chemotherapy with high-dosage Ara-C. Consequently, the homoharringtonine-based regimen achieved excellent EFS and alleviated hematologic toxicity for children aged younger than 2 years with AML compared with the anthracycline-based regimen.
