Zooming in and out of ferroptosis in human disease

Frontiers of Medicine 2023, Volume 17, Issue 2,   Pages 173-206 doi: 10.1007/s11684-023-0992-z

Abstract: Ferroptosis is defined as an iron-dependent regulated form of cell death driven by lipid peroxidation. In the past decade, it has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases that together involve almost every organ of the body, including various cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, liver diseases, kidney diseases, endocrine metabolic diseases, iron-overload-related diseases, orthopedic diseases and autoimmune diseases. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis and its regulatory pathways could provide additional strategies for the management of these disease conditions. Indeed, there are an expanding number of studies suggesting that ferroptosis serves as a bona-fide target for the prevention and treatment of these diseases in relevant pre-clinical models. In this review, we summarize the progress in the research into ferroptosis and its regulatory mechanisms in human disease, while providing evidence in support of ferroptosis as a target for the treatment of these diseases. We also discuss our perspectives on the future directions in the targeting of ferroptosis in human disease.

Effect of salting process on the texture and physicochemical properties of turbot

Wang Tiantian,Li Zhenxing,Lin Hong,Guo Xiaohua

Strategic Study of CAE 2014, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 64-68

Abstract:

To study the effects of salt concentration, curing time and curing methods on the quality of salted turbot, the texture and physicochemical property changes were analyzed. Results showed that the effect of salt concentration and curing time on salted turbot chewing was significant (P<0.05);while the hardness, elasticity and gumminess was insignificant. Significant effect (P<0.05) of curing methods was also seen in hardness, elasticity and gumminess. During curing process, when the salt concentration increased 2 %,the acid value decreased 1.03 mg/g and the peroxide value decreased 0.1 g/100 g. With the curing time increasing, the acid value and peroxide value enhanced;also, the curing time had significant effects on sensory evaluation (P<0.05). In summary, pickling process had significant impact on the quality of turbot products. Based on the effects of various parameters, this work will provide basic data for further optimization of salted turbot process.

Sebastian KREUZ, Felix MÜSGENS

Frontiers in Energy 2017, Volume 11, Issue 2,   Pages 126-134 doi: 10.1007/s11708-017-0467-5

Abstract: This paper gives a short overview of the German Energiewende, i.e. the transition of a large and mostly thermal electricity system towards electricity generation from renewable energy source. It discusses both, the motivation of the transitions as future goals and current status. Furthermore, it gives an in-depth view into the changes in economic costs for society as well as electricity price effects, especially for average private households and industrial consumers. It also discusses the benefits of the promotion of renewable energies in Germany.

Washing out heavy metals from contaminated soils from an iron and steel smelting site

Guangxu ZHU,Qingjun GUO,Junxing YANG,Hanzhi ZHANG,Rongfei WEI,Chunyu WANG,Marc PETERS,Xiaoyong ZHOU,Jun YANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 4,   Pages 634-641 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0713-6

Abstract: Washing is a promising method for separating contaminants bound to the particles of soil by chemical mobilization. Laboratory batch washing experiments were conducted using deionized water and varying concentrations of oxalic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA) to assess the efficiency of using these chemicals as washing agents and to clean up heavy metals from two heavily polluted soils from an iron and streel smelting site. The toxicity reduction index and remediation costs were analyzed, and the results showed that the soils were polluted with Cd, Pb and Zn. Hydrochloric acid and EDTA were more efficient than the other washing agents in the remediation of the test soils. The maximum total toxicity reduction index showed that 0.5 mol·L hydrochloric acid could achieve the remediation with the lowest costs.

Xuzhan ZHOU,Shanshan LIU,Mingkun WANG,Yiping DAI,Yaohua TANG

Frontiers in Energy 2014, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 386-393 doi: 10.1007/s11708-014-0323-9

Abstract: Accurate modeling and parameters of high voltage (HV) grid are critical for stability research of system frequency. In this paper, simulation modeling of the system frequency was conducted of an interconnected power system with HV transmission lines in China. Based on recorded tripping data of the HV transmission lines, system parameters were identified by using genetic algorithm (GA). The favorable agreement between simulation results and recorded data verifies the validity of gird models and the accuracy of system parameters. The results of this paper can provide reference for the stability research of HV power grid.
