Finite Layer Analysis of Three-Dimensional Biot Consolidation of Homogeneous Soils

Mei Guoxiong,Zai Jinmin,Zhao Weibing,Yin Jianhua

Strategic Study of CAE 2004, Volume 6, Issue 7,   Pages 43-47

Abstract:

This paper presents a finite layer procedure for the consolidation analysis of layered soils using a cross isotropic elastic constitutive model. The program is first verified using two published results. Then using this program, the influences of cross isotropy on the consolidation behavior are analyzed. The results obtained using the cross isotropic elastic model are compared with results using isotropic elastic model. It is found that the cross isotropy has very large influences on the consolidation behavior. Curves of the average degree of consolidation are obtained and presented in the paper, which is useful for engineering practice.

Optimal slot dimension for skirt support structure of coke drums

Edward WANG, Zihui XIA

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2018, Volume 13, Issue 4,   Pages 554-562 doi: 10.1007/s11465-018-0513-y

Abstract:

The skirt-to-shell junction weld on coke drums is susceptible to fatigue failure due to severe thermal cyclic stresses. One method to decrease junction stress is to add slots near the top of the skirt, thereby reducing the local stiffness close to the weld. The most common skirt slot design is thin relative to its circumferential spacing. A new slot design, which is significantly wider, is proposed. In this study, thermal-mechanical elastoplastic 3-D finite element models of coke drums are created to analyze the effect of different skirt designs on the stress/strain field near the shell-to-skirt junction weld, as well as any other critical stress locations in the overall skirt design. The results confirm that the inclusion of the conventional slot design effectively reduces stress in the junction weld. However, it has also been found that the critical stress location migrates from the shell-to-skirt junction weld to the slot ends. A method is used to estimate the fatigue life near the critical areas of each skirt slot design. It is found that wider skirt slots provide a significant improvement on fatigue life in the weld and slot area.

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 4,   Pages 90-96 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.04.015

Abstract:

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the Chinese Academy of Engineering's "China Intelligent Manufacturing Development Strategy Research Report Based on the New Generation of Artificial Intelligence", the author adopts the method of deconstruction and reconstruction, to analyze the Reference Architecture Model of Industrial 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) of Germany, and compared with the general architecture of intelligent manufacturing proposed in the report of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and similarities and differences of each other are found. It is believed that the general architecture of the intelligent manufacturing in China is superior in intelligence. This is the Chinese contribution to the development of intelligent manufacturing. At the same time, the analysis deepens the understanding of the both architectures.

Measuring residents’ anxiety under urban redevelopment in China: An investigation of demographic variables

Jinbo SONG, Chen QIAN, Zhuo FENG, Liang MA

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 48-59 doi: 10.1007/s42524-020-0131-3

Abstract: Residents’ concerns and feelings play pivotal roles in smoothly promoting urban redevelopment. Anxiety, as an intuitive feeling toward uncertainties, generally exists among residents who are confronted with redevelopment, and this feeling has gradually attracted scholars’ attention. However, relatively few studies have focused on the multidimensional view of this concept and its influencing factors. Drawing upon a large-scale questionnaire survey conducted in 13 pilot areas in China, this study refines and verifies five prominent dimensions of anxiety, namely, housing conditions, monetary compensation, public services, life adaptation, and public participation level, through factor analysis and one-sample -test. The finding contributes to achieving a complete understanding of anxiety, and the scales developed for measuring these dimensions lay the foundation for further empirical studies on anxiety. The individual and collective effects of age, job, and region variables on anxiety dimensions are demonstrated via independent-sample -test and analysis of variance, which clarifies the formation process of anxiety and highlights the importance of these contextual variables. Tailored strategies for policymaking and engineering management, including establishing reasonable compensation standards, providing equal public services, and delivering high-quality housing, are proposed to relieve residents’ anxiety. These strategies are expected to consider further the sensitive group, such as the elderly, farmers, and casual workers.
