Iterative HOEO fusion strategy: a promising tool for enhancing bearing fault feature

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2023, Volume 18, Issue 1, doi: 10.1007/s11465-022-0725-z

Abstract: As parameter independent yet simple techniques, the energy operator (EO) and its variants have received considerable attention in the field of bearing fault feature detection. However, the performances of these improved EO techniques are subjected to the limited number of EOs, and they cannot reflect the non-linearity of the machinery dynamic systems and affect the noise reduction. As a result, the fault-related transients strengthened by these improved EO techniques are still subject to contamination of strong noises. To address these issues, this paper presents a novel EO fusion strategy for enhancing the bearing fault feature nonlinearly and effectively. Specifically, the proposed strategy is conducted through the following three steps. First, a multi-dimensional information matrix (MDIM) is constructed by performing the higher order energy operator (HOEO) on the analysis signal iteratively. MDIM is regarded as the fusion source of the proposed strategy with the properties of improving the signal-to-interference ratio and suppressing the noise in the low-frequency region. Second, an enhanced manifold learning algorithm is performed on the normalized MDIM to extract the intrinsic manifolds correlated with the fault-related impulses. Third, the intrinsic manifolds are weighted to recover the fault-related transients. Simulation studies and experimental verifications confirm that the proposed strategy is more effective for enhancing the bearing fault feature than the existing methods, including HOEOs, the weighting HOEO fusion, the fast Kurtogram, and the empirical mode decomposition.

Shahab POURTALEBI, Imre HORVÁTH

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2017, Volume 18, Issue 9,   Pages 1396-1415 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1601235

Abstract: Complementing our previous publications, this paper presentsthe information schema constructs (ISCs) that underpin the programmingof specific system manifestation feature (SMF) orientated informationmanagement and composing system models. First, we briefly present(1) the general process of pre-embodiment design with SMFs, (2) theprocedures of creating genotypes and phenotypes of SMFs, (3) the specificprocedure of instantiation of phenotypes of SMFs, and (4) the procedureof system model management and processing. Then, the chunks of informationneeded for instantiation of phenotypes of SMFs are discussed, andthe ISCs designed for instantiation presented. Afterwards, the informationmanagement aspects of system modeling are addressed. Methodologically, system modeling involves (1) placement of phenotypes of SMF in themodeling space, (2) combining them towards the desired architectureand operation, (3) assigning values to the parameters and checkingthe satisfaction of constraints, and (4) storing the system modelin the SMFs-based warehouse database. The final objective of the reportedresearch is to develop an SMFs-based toolbox to support modeling ofcyber-physical systems (CPSs).

New method for computer numerical control machine tool calibration: Relay method

LIU Huanlao, SHI Hanming, LI Bin, ZHOU Huichen

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2007, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 301-304 doi: 10.1007/s11465-007-0053-3

Abstract: Relay measurement method, which uses the kilogram-meter (KGM) measurement system to identify volumetric errors on the planes of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, is verified through experimental tests. During the process, all position errors on the entire plane table are measured by the equipment, which is limited to a small field. All errors are obtained first by measuring the error of the basic position near the original point. On the basis of that positional error, the positional errors far away from the original point are measured. Using this analogy, the error information on the positional points on the entire plane can be obtained. The process outlined above is called the relay method. Test results indicate that the accuracy and repeatability are high, and the method can be used to calibrate geometric errors on the plane of CNC machine tools after backlash errors have been well compensated.

Error compensation for tool-tip trace during cutting of laminated paper for rapid prototyping

Yucheng DING, Changhe LI, Dichen LI, Guoxin YU

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2009, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 111-119 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0020-2

Abstract: Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is one of the commercialized rapid prototyping (RP) processes, where a focused laser is usually used to cut the cross-section contours of a 3 D part and the grid hatchings of the part-exterior region on a sheet paper stack-wise. Using a laser beam as a cutter can be costly, and the thermal burning of a sheet paper along a laser scanning path can also cause an environment-polluting smoke. This paper presents a paper laminating RP system using a knife as the paper cutter instead of a laser beam. The knife holder is mounted through a radial bearing on the - positioning mechanism in such a way that the knife tip is eccentric to the bearing axis by a small distance (so-called offset). Therefore, the knife tip, which engages into the sheet paper during cutting, tends to follow the path of the -driven bearing axis by the error that depends on the path tangential and the eccentricity of the knife tip. A tractrix model is applied to describe the kinetic motion of the knife tip and a method is formulated to compensate for the tracing error of the eccentric knife tip by modifying the original cross-section contours of the part for each layer based on the tractrix equation. A study has also been performed regarding the effect of the knife tip geometry on the cutting notch of the sheet paper and on the roughness of the finished part.
