Dynamic behavior of superheated steam and ways of control

LI Xu

Frontiers in Energy 2008, Volume 2, Issue 1,   Pages 25-30 doi: 10.1007/s11708-008-0014-5

Abstract: A simple way of calculating the dynamic behavior of a superheater is presented. A comparison of the measured data with the calculated result verifies the accuracy of this simple method. It is the first time that a phase compensation for real roots, i.e., the twin lead/lag loop which is facile for engineering applications, is used in superheated steam temperature control. Numerous simulation results show that both the response time lapse and maximal dynamic deviation are greatly reduced. Moreover, a formula to calculate the setting parameters is presented, together with a practical example of its engineering application in superheated steam temperature control with single-stage attemperation in a power plant boiler. This method can remarkably improve the control performance of superheated steam temperature and makes it possible for one stage attemperation to be sufficient for the superheater of power plant boilers, thus simplifying the superheater system and reducing investment. Because the control performance is remarkably raised, the set values of the steam temperature control system can be raised above rated values and also the operational economy, without impairing the operation safety.

Surgical robotics: A look-back of latest advancement and bio-inspired ways to tackle existing challenges

Yang LIU, Jing LIU

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2012, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 376-384 doi: 10.1007/s11465-012-0352-1

Abstract:

This article is dedicated to present a review on existing challenges and latest developments in surgical robotics in attempts to overcome the obstacles lying behind. Rather than to perform an exhaustive evaluation, we would emphasize more on the new insight by digesting the emerging bio-inspired surgical technologies with potentials to revolutionize the field. Typical approaches, possible applications, advantages and technical challenges were discussed. Evolutions of surgical robotics and future trends were analyzed. It can be found that, the major difficulties in the field of surgical robots may not be properly addressed by only using conventional approaches. As an alternative, bio-inspired methods or materials may shed light on new innovations. While endeavors to deal with existing strategies still need to be made, attentions should be paid to also borrow ideas from nature.

Creep life assessment of aero-engine recuperator based on continuum damage mechanics approach

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2021, Volume 17, Issue 4, doi: 10.1007/s11465-022-0702-6

Abstract: The creep life of an aeroengine recuperator is investigated in terms of continuum damage mechanics by using finite element simulations. The effects of the manifold wall thickness and creep properties of brazing filler metal on the operating life of the recuperator are analyzed. Results show that the crack initiates from the brazing filler metal located on the outer surface of the manifold with the wall thickness of 2 mm and propagates throughout the whole region of the brazing filler metal when the creep time reaches 34900 h. The creep life of the recuperator meets the requirement of 40000 h continuous operation when the wall thickness increases to 3.5 mm, but its total weight increases by 15%. Decreasing the minimum creep strain rate with the enhancement of the creep strength of the brazing filler metal presents an obvious effect on the creep life of the recuperator. At the same stress level, the creep rupture time of the recuperator is enhanced by 13 times if the mismatch between the minimum creep rate of the filler and base metal is reduced by 20%.
