Crossing “Environmental Mountain”——On the Increase and Decrease of Environment Impact in the Process of Economic Growth

Lu Zhongwu,Mao Jiansu

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 12,   Pages 36-42

Abstract:

The curve of environmental impact in the process of economic growth in developed countries was likened to “environmental mountain”. For developing countries, particularly China, the right way of economic development is going through the “environmental mountain” on the halfway up the mountain - a new way for industrialization. The formulas of the relationship between environmental impact and GDP were derived, in which there are 2 key variables: g—growth rate of GDP; t—decreasing rate of environmental impact per unit GDP. Taking several countries and provinces in China as examples, the relationships between economic growth and energy consumption were studied. The environmental impacts of China in the years 2005, 2010 and 2020 were anticipated under different assumptions, and further discussion was given in terms of energy consumption.

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 5,   Pages 63-68 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.05.010

Abstract:

A fishery environment is a place on which the survival and reproduction of aquatic lives rely and is the foundation of fishery development. In general, the deterioration of the environmental quality of fishery waters in China has not yet been fundamentally curbed, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen and active phosphate are still the major indicators of pollution in fishery waters. Based on analyses of the status and variation trend of the fishery environment, in this review, we clarify the main factors that affect the sustainable development of China's fishery environment, such as development of construction projects, pollution of external sources, ecological disasters, and pollution accidents; identify major environmental issues in key areas of water; propose the idea of sustainable fishery environment based on green, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly development; establish the overall development goal and the specific development goals of two stages by 2025 and 2030; and put forward suggestions and measures including strictly controlling external pollution and aquaculture self-pollution, delineating the ecological conservation redline, improving the monitoring technology system, strengthening ecological rehabilitation, and implementing innovation projects of the fishery environment in China, hoping to provide references for the protection and management of China's fishery environment.

Environmental process of the deep-water lakes and approach to the protection of water resources on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau

Wan Guojiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2009, Volume 11, Issue 5,   Pages 60-71

Abstract:

It is of local, regional and global importance to understand the environmental changes on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Difference on bio-geochemical process of the sediment-water interface exists among lakes so that protection approaches to water resources vary. a. The coal mining in the catchment of Lake Aha causes Fe-Mn accumulation in the sediment leading to the seasonal secondary pollution. In anoxic condition, the sulphate deoxidization migrates to the upper layer of sediments which results in Fe2+ screening of the diffusive boundary layer. The Fe-Mn cycling is controlled by both the sediment-water geological interface and oxidation-reduction chemical interface. Controlling Fe-Mn release and reducing their flux into the lake, selecting good-quality water district and cleaning sludge are efficient ways to control pollutions. b. Paroxysmal deterioration of water quality in Lake Baihua appeared in autumn, 1994 in Guizhou. Analysis of incident cross-correlation water-quality indicators indicated that the "Lake Black Tide"  resulted from the coupling of bio-oxidation of depositional organic matters under the specific season and climatic conditions; pH-restraint of de-nitric process led to increase in NO-2 concentration. The water quality was expected to recover in times with the balancing of oxygen in waters, input of water flow and better weather conditions. This was confirmed by the late monitoring. c. The average sedimentation rate of Lake Erhai is 0.047 g ·cm-2 ·a-1. The Pb-isotopic compositions of recent sediments indicate that may have a stable source. The depositional organic matter originates mainly from the land. In the chemical processes of early diagenesis, the Corg vertical profiles of sediments show three stages "Deposition-Decomposition-Accumulation" . In the last 460 years, small-scope frequent fluctuation of δ13Corg and synchronically decreasing trends of δ13Cinorg and δ18Oinorg indicate an obvious influence of human activity in the catchment. Control of input flux of terrestrial organic matters into Lake Erhai is a fundamental strategy. d. Lake Chenghai in Yunnan is a moderate-eutrophic lake with a total ion concentration close to a low limit of saline lake. The atomic ratios of Horg/Corg and Corg/Norg indicate that the organic matters mainly stem from the endogenous plankton algae remains; there is a good synchronous relationship of the depositional fluxes between 210Pbex and Corg in the sedimentary records. In particular, the synchronizations over the time indicate the increase in the lake primary productivity. The Clean-Effect reflects an adjustive role of lake nature function in the lake eutrophication.

Water Environmental Recovery Policy in China

Zhang Jie,Cong Guangzhi

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 8,   Pages 44-49

Abstract:

With the increasing deterioration of water environment, it is very urgent that an efficient method be found to control and rebuild a healthy recycling of water. Based on the relationship between natural and societal recycling of water, this paper highlights that social sustainable development should be harmonized with nature and shows that the recovery and maintenance of water environment should be based on a healthy societal recycling of water. A systematic theory and strategy of water environmental recovery has been put forward for the first time and the authors hold that a new branch-water environment science and technology-should be established in order to provide scientific foundation and professional. It is elemental and essential that all kinds of water-related work should be carried out in terms of water environment.

Three Gorges Project: a project for ecological improvement and environmental protection in Yangtze River Basin

Lu Youmei

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 7,   Pages 9-14

Abstract:

Seeking water and earning their livelihoods is the natural selection of human beings. Like other rivers on the earth, the Yangtze River is the birthplace of human civilization and survival. As an ecosystem, the Yangtze River Basin is evolving under the influences of natural factors and human activities. Because of soil erosion, pollution and human activities, the imbalance of secondary environment is exacerbated and the ecological environment has become more vulnerable. It is urgent to mitigate and prevent the ecological crisis. The practice has proved that implementation of engineering measures is an effective way to improve the ecological environment. The Three Gorges Project (TGP) has a flood control storage capacity of 22.15 billion m3, effectively storing the flood water upstream of Yichang, and protects 15 million people and 1.5 million hm2 farmland. Furthermore, the project can prevent or slow down the sedimentation and shrinkage of the lakes in the middle Yangtze River such as Dongting Lake; with an average annual power generation of about 90 billion kW·h, it can significantly reduce CO2 and harmful gas emission. In general, the construction of TGP is conducive to the ecological and environmental protection in the Yangtze River Basin and China, even the world.

Fang Lin,Wang Jun

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 77-80

Abstract:

In order to choose the most economical and efficient airliner environmental control system, several types of air cooling systems for the modern airliners were optimized and compared. The optimized mathematical models of two wheels system with low pressure water separation, three wheels system with high pressure water separation and four wheels system with high pressure water separation were established respectively. The fuel oil loss for airliner environmental control system is taken as the objective function. Generalized multiplier combined with simplex method is used to seek the optimum solution. The optimized results can be used as the theoretic foundation for the design and research of airliner environment control system.
