Utilization of alkali-activated copper slag as binder in concrete

摘要： This study was focused on developing concrete using alkali-activated copper slag (AACS) as a binder. The properties of alkali-activated copper slag concrete (AACSC) were compared with portland cement concrete (PCC). Different AACSC mixes were prepared with varying Na₂O dosage (6% and 8% of the binder by weight) and curing methods. Hydration products in AACSC were retrieved using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. The test results indicate that the workability of AACSC was lesser than that of PCC. The AACSC mix with 6% Na₂O dosage has exhibited similar mechanical properties as that of PCC. The mechanical properties of AACSC were higher than PCC when 8% of Na₂O dosage was used. Heat curing was effective to upgrade the strength properties of AACSC at an early age of curing, but at a later age mechanical properties of ambient cured and heat-cured AACSC were comparable. The hydration products of AACSC were not identified in XRD patterns, whereas, in FTIR spectra of AACSC some alkali-activated reaction products were reflected. The AACSC mixes were found to be more sustainable than PCC. It has been concluded that AACSC can be produced similarly to that of PCC and ambient curing is sufficient.

Lithium-ion modified cellulose as a water-soluble binder for Li-O battery

摘要： An environment-friendly, water-soluble, and cellulose based binder (lithium carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC-Li) was successfully synthesized by using Li⁺ to replace Na⁺ in the commercial sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). Li-O₂ batteries based on the CMC-Li binder present enhanced discharge specific capacities (11151 mA·h/g at 100 mA/g) and a superior cycling stability (100 cycles at 200 mA/g) compared with those based on the CMC-Na binder. The enhanced performance may originate from the electrochemical stability of the CMC-Li binder and the ion-conductive nature of CMC-Li, which promotes the diffusion of Li⁺ in the cathode and consequently retards the increase of charge transfer resistance of the cathode during cycling. The results show that the water-soluble CMC-Li binder can be a green substitute for poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder based on organic solvent in the lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs).

Fatigue of asphalt binder, mastic and mixture at low temperature

摘要： The fatigue damage is one of the most common distresses observed on the asphalt concrete pavement. To thoroughly understand the fatigue of asphalt concrete, the behaviors of the major components of asphalt concrete under cyclic loading are investigated respectively in this study. A new experiment method is developed to evaluate the performances of asphalt binder, mastic and fine aggregates mixture under cyclic tensile loading. The fatigue test results of asphalt binder show that the fatigue performance of asphalt binder is closely related with loading magnitude, temperature and loading rate. Mastic specimens with different filler content are tested and the results indicate that mastic specimens with 30% filler content show better fatigue resistance and higher permanent strain. The micro-structure analysis of mastic and mixture indicates that the fatigue resistance is closely related with the air void content of specimen. 3D digital specimens are developed to model the fatigue of the asphalt binder, mastic and mixture specimens based on the finite element method (FEM). Fatigue damage of asphalt concrete is simplified by a damage model. With proper selection of damage parameters, the simulation results agree well with laboratory test results and can be used as a basis for future fatigue research.

A state-of-the-art review on interfacial behavior between asphalt binder and mineral aggregate

摘要： The interface between asphalt binder and mineral aggregate directly affects the service life of pavement because the defects and stress concentration occur more easily there. The interaction between asphalt binder and mineral aggregate is the main cause of forming the interface. This paper presents an extensive review on the test technologies and analysis methods of interfacial interaction, including molecular dynamics simulation, phase field approach, absorption tests, rheological methods and macro mechanical tests. All of the studies conducted on this topic clearly indicated that the interfacial interaction between asphalt binder and mineral aggregate is a physical-chemical process, and can be qualitatively characterized by microscopical technique (such as SEM and AFM), and also can be quantitatively evaluated by rheological methods and interfacial mechanical tests. Molecular dynamics simulation and phase field approach were also demonstrated to be effective methods to study the interfacial behavior and its mechanism.

Process development for green part printing using binder jetting additive manufacturing

Originally developed decades ago, the binder jetting additive manufacturing (BJ-AM) process possesses various advantages compared to other additive manufacturing (AM) technologies such as broad material compatibility and technological expandability. However, the adoption of BJ-AM has been limited by the lack of knowledge with the fundamental understanding of the process principles and characteristics, as well as the relatively few systematic design guideline that are available. In this work, the process design considerations for BJ-AM in green part fabrication were discussed in detail in order to provide a comprehensive perspective of the design for additive manufacturing for the process. Various process factors, including binder saturation, in-process drying, powder spreading, powder feedstock characteristics, binder characteristics and post-process curing, could significantly affect the printing quality of the green parts such as geometrical accuracy and part integrity. For powder feedstock with low flowability, even though process parameters could be optimized to partially offset the printing feasibility issue, the qualities of the green parts will be intrinsically limited due to the existence of large internal voids that are inaccessible to the binder. In addition, during the process development, the balanced combination between the saturation level and in-process drying is of critical importance in the quality control of the green parts.

A dimensional analysis on asphalt binder fracture and fatigue cracking

摘要： Fracture and fatigue cracking in asphalt binder are two of most serious problems for pavement engineers. In this paper, we present a new comprehensive approach, which consists both of dimensional analysis using Buckingham Theorem and -integral analysis based on classic fracture mechanics, to evaluate the fracture and fatigue on asphalt binder. It is discovered that the dimensional analysis could provide a new perspective to analyze the asphalt fracture and fatigue cracking mechanism.

Laboratory investigation of emulsified asphalt binder modified with wood-derived nano-cellulose and nano

摘要： Emulsified asphalt is the primary material for preventive maintenance and cold-mix paving, but its low cohesive strength and poor mechanical properties limit its wide application, even with polymer modification. In this study, Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) emulsified asphalt was modified with nano-cellulose materials, namely nano paper-cellulose (NPC) and wood-derived nano-cellulose (WDC), to improve its properties. A novel preparation method of nano-cellulose solution was developed, including blending, ultrasonic stirring, and centrifugal treatment. Four types of nano-cellulose solution (0.5% NPC, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% WDC by weight of water) were selected. The microscopy analysis indicated that 0.5% WDC emulsion had a smaller particle size than 1.5% WDC emulsion. The rheology test indicated that WDC modified residue improved rutting resistance with the increased solution dosage due to the cross-linking effect, but its creep-and-recovery performance was worse than that of SBR emulsion residue. The NPC modified binder had a higher rutting factor than WDC modified binder at the same dosage after short-term aging. In addition, 1.0% WDC could be regarded as the optimal dosage in terms of fatigue and low-temperature performance. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that 0.5% NPC modified residue performed better in long-term aging resistance compared with 0.5%WDC modified asphalt.

Linear viscoelastic behavior of asphalt binders and mixtures containing very high percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement

摘要： The primary aim of this study is to correlate the impact of aggregates, if any, on the viscoelastic behavior of rejuvenated asphalt mixtures containing very high amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) (> 50%). First, gradation of 100% RAP was rectified, using a modified Bailey method by adding virgin aggregates to achieve two coarse dense-graded and one fine dense-graded blends. Complex modulus test was then performed from −35 to +35 °C and 0.01–10 Hz. In addition to performance grade (PG) testing, extracted and recovered binders from different asphalt mixtures underwent shear complex modulus test within −8 °C to high temperature PG and frequencies from 0.001 to 30 Hz. Cole−Cole, Black space, complex modulus and phase angle master curves were constructed and Shift-Homothety-Shift in time-Shift (SHStS) transformation was used to compare the linear viscoelastic behavior of asphalt binders and mixtures. The influence of aggregates on the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mixtures depends on temperature and/or frequency. The role of asphalt binders in the behavior of asphalt mixtures is more pronounced at high temperatures and the effect of the aggregate structure increases as the temperature falls. The maximum difference (60% to 70%) in the viscoelastic behavior of the binder and mixture based on SHStS transformed Cole−Cole curves is within the phase angle of 15°–20°.

Aging properties and aging mechanism of activated waste rubber powder modified asphalt binder based on

摘要： The research and development of high-performance pavement materials has been intensified owing to the demand for long-life pavements. This study is performed to develop a novel pavement material using waste rubber powder, waste lubricating by-product (LBP), and asphalt. Subsequently, the aging properties and aging mechanism of activated waste rubber powder modified asphalt (ARMA) are investigated based on its rheological properties and micro-characterization. The rheological results show that, compared with waste rubber powder modified asphalt (RMA), ARMA offers a higher aging resistance and a longer fatigue life. A comparison and analysis of the rheological aging parameters of ARMA and RMA show that LBP activation diminishes the aging sensitivity of ARMA. The micro-characterization result shows that the aging of ARMA may be caused by the fact that LBP-activated waste rubber powder is more reactive and can form a dense colloidal structure with asphalt. Therefore, the evaporation loss of asphalt light components by heat and the damage to the colloidal structure by oxygen during the aging process are impeded, and the thermal-oxidative aging resistance of ARMA is improved.

of effects of Cocamide Diethanolamide chemical on physical and rheological properties of bituminous binder

摘要： In this study, bituminous binder was modified with Cocamide Diethanolamide chemical, a non-ionic surfactant, and the physical and rheological properties of modified binders were investigated. In addition, Cocamide Diethanolamide has been used for the first time to modify bituminous binder, and this situation makes the study distinctive. Bituminous binder was modified more than once with the chemical by changing modification parameters and using certain additive ratios (1%, 3%, and 5%). The effects of different modification parameters and chemical additive on modified samples were investigated with conventional bitumen tests (softening point, penetration, ductility) and Superpave tests (rotational viscometer, rolling thin film oven test, pressure aging vessel, dynamic shear rheometer, bending beam rheometer). In addition, the structural characteristics of the reference binder and modified samples were examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The examinations showed that Cocamide Diethanolamide softens bituminous binder and lowers processing temperatures. In addition, compared to reference binder, rutting resistances of modified bituminous binders decreased with the increase of additive ratio. However, modification with Cocamide Diethanolamide increased the resistance to fatigue cracks and thermal cracks.

Effect of alumina and zirconia as binders on the activity of Fe-BEA for NH

摘要： Fe-BEA catalysts are active for the NH -SCR of NO. For industrial application, a binder should be added to the Fe-BEA catalysts to make them tightly adhere to the monoliths. The addition of alumina and zirconia as binders to the Fe-BEA led to a different effect on NO conversion. The catalytic activity of the mixed samples was evaluated by the temperature programmed procedure in a flow-reactor system, and the mechanism was analyzed via SEM, BET, XRD and XPS. It was found that larger iron particles were formed by the migration of parent iron particles in the Fe-BEA catalyst with alumina. This led to the increase of Fe magnitude and iron cluster, enhancing the abilities of NO oxidation and storage. Accordingly, the SCR activity increased slightly in low temperature but decreased sharply in high temperature. For the Fe-BEA with zirconia sample, NO oxidation and storage abilities decreased due to the less iron clusters. The increase of Fe magnitude resulted in higher catalytic oxidation ability, which gave rise to little change in the SCR activity compared with the Fe-BEA.
