The role of EcoCampus in addressing sustainability in UK universities

摘要: Universities are key drivers of sustainable development and are well-positioned to contribute to the sustainability agenda. Universities in the United Kingdom (UK) are themselves large and influential organisations, and because of their size, can have a significant impact on the environment. Their challenge, however, is to practice what they preach and to manage their own estates and procurement decisions to reduce their impact on the environment and meet carbon reduction targets. In the UK, higher education (HE) sector Scopes 1 and 2 carbon CO e emissions have, over recent years, been falling considerably short of the emission reduction targets set by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in all but a few institutions. Setting sector specific targets, therefore, does not guarantee success in addressing climate change. However, in those institutions adopting the EcoCampus management system approach, Scopes 1 and 2 carbon CO e emissions have fallen by up to 5% over the latest reporting period (2013/2014–2014/2015). This contrasts with the increase in emissions from those institutions who currently do not have a certified management system and are currently at the bottom of the People and Planet University League Table. (This is an independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance). Environmental management systems (EMSs) are increasingly being used by organisations to improve their environmental performance. EMSs deliver many benefits such as reducing resource use and pollution, complying with relevant environmental legislation, managing risks, improving corporate reputation and saving costs. The aim of this research was to assess the carbon management performance of universities in the UK and China and relate this to the level of uptake of EMSs in these universities. The results of this research informed the development of the EMS support and awards programme called EcoCampus. EcoCampus addresses the challenges faced by universities in reducing their carbon emissions by developing an EMS in simple stages with support in a variety of different forms. This self-financing programme has now been operating successfully for over ten years. During this time, EcoCampus has worked with over 60 universities and colleges in the UK. Eighteen participants have currently achieved the highest phase of EcoCampus and certification to the international EMS standard ISO14001. There are currently 40 universities, one research institute and three colleges enrolled on the various phases of the EcoCampus programme. There are five universities from the Russell Group including Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Nottingham University, Newcastle University and University College London. The EcoCampus programme is highly successful in the UK and there is growing interest from international universities wishing to join the programme. Seven of the top ten universities in the UK’s People and Planet University League Table are EcoCampus members. All the top ten universities in the League Table have shown a reduction in their carbon emissions. In contrast, the ten institutions at the bottom of the League don’t have a certified EMS and have increased their carbon emissions. By identifying the benefits of an EMS, particularly in relation to carbon management, it is hoped that this paper will encourage organisations to develop, implement and operate an EMS. This should lead to a more sustainable sector able to lead by example.

Agriculture Green Development in China and the UK: common objectives and converging policy pathways

This paper has three aims. First, to examine how the negative environmental consequences of intensive agriculture have driven China and the UK to shift away from narrowly focused farm output policies and adopt more holistic green development pathways. Second, to explore the policy objectives they have in common. Third, to assess the numerous opportunities for joint research and knowledge sharing through the Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network and other existing institutional mechanisms. The intensification of agricultural production in the UK started several decades earlier than in China as did the negative environmental consequences of the farm practices. However, their strategies and policies for sustainable intensification and green development have much in common. These are set out in two main documents: the Chinese State Council guidelines for green agriculture and the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs 25 Year Environment Plan. There are substantial mutual advantages from greater collaboration on problem identification and monitoring; the development of appropriate technological and management responses and the formulation of sound policies. To achieve this potential, it is recommended that further thought be given to how best to bring together all of the key stakeholders along the whole food chain.

Understanding high-emitting households in the UK through a cluster analysis

摘要: Anthropogenic climate change is a global problem that affects every country and each individual. It is largely caused by human beings emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In general, a small percentage of the population is responsible for a large amount of emissions. This paper focuses on high emitters and their CO emissions from energy use in UK homes. It applies a cluster approach, aiming to identify whether the high emitters comprise clusters where households in each cluster share similar characteristics but are different from the others. The data are mainly based on the Living Cost and Food survey in the UK. The results show that after equivalising both household emissions and income, the high emitters can be clustered into six groups which share similar characteristics within each group, but are different from the others in terms of income, age, household composition, category and size of the dwelling, and tenure type. The clustering results indicate that various combinations of socioeconomic factors, such as low-income single female living in an at least six-room property, or high-income retired couple owning a large detached house, could all lead to high CO emissions from energy use at home. Policymakers should target each high-emitter cluster differently to reduce CO emissions from energy consumption at home more effectively.

Precision agriculture, and more specifically Site-Specific Crop Management (SSCM), has been implemented in some form across nearly all agricultural production systems over the past 25 years. Adoption has been greatest in developed agricultural countries. In this review article, the current situation of SSCM adoption and application is investigated from the perspective of a developed (UK) and developing (China) agricultural economy. The current state-of-the art is reviewed with an emphasis on developments in position system technology and satellite-based remote sensing. This is augmented with observations on the differences between the use of SSCM technologies and methodologies in the UK and China and discussion of the opportunities for (and limitations to) increasing SSCM adoption in developing agricultural economies. A particular emphasis is given to the role of socio-demographic factors and the application of responsible research and innovation (RRI) in translating agri-technologies into China and other developing agricultural economies. Several key research and development areas are identified that need to be addressed to facilitate the delivery of SSCM as a holistic service into areas with low precision (PA) agriculture adoption. This has implications for developed as well as developing agricultural economies.

Energy-efficient trajectory planning for a multi-UAV-assisted mobile edge computing system

摘要: We study a system assisted by (UAVs), where the UAVs act as edge servers to provide computing services for Internet of Things devices. Our goal is to minimize the energy consumption of this system by planning the trajectories of UAVs. This problem is difficult to address because when planning the trajectories, we need to consider not only the order of stop points (SPs), but also their deployment (including the number and locations) and the association between UAVs and SPs. To tackle this problem, we present an energy-efficient algorithm (TPA) which comprises three phases. 摘要: 目的:随着四元数在信号处理各个领域越来越广泛的应用,基于四元数的信号处理理论也获得了快速发展。然而,制约其进一步应用的一个瓶颈就是对一般四元数函数的梯度的定义及特性还缺乏清晰并有说服力的描述。本文就试图对这一问题进行探索。 创新点:在信号处理中,虽然很多优化函数的值都是实数,但在进行优化时,尤其是在非线性信号处理中,经常会遇到对取值为四元数的四元数函数求梯度。不同于以往只适用于实数值四元数函数梯度的定义,本文第一次就一般四元数函数的梯度给出了一个自洽的定义,并对其特性进行了详细的研究和描述。基于以上研究,本文对四元数值的最小均方(LMS)自适应算法,以及一个有代表性的非线性自适应算法进行了推导,并以矢量传感器阵列波束形成为例进行了计算机模拟。

摘要: 视觉注意预测能帮助建立适应性虚拟博物馆环境,提供上下文感知和交互式用户体验。目前,利用眼动数据探究视觉注意机制的研究仍限于二维场景。研究者尚未能从时间和空间的角度出发,在三维虚拟场景里研究这一问题。为此,我们构建了第一个用于虚拟博物馆视觉注意建模的三维眼动数据集,命名为EDVAM。我们还建立了一个深度学习模型,通过历史眼动轨迹预测用户未来的视觉注意区域,用于测试EDVAM。这项研究能为虚拟博物馆的视觉注意建模和上下文感知交互提供参考。

摘要: 近年来,对智能和简化、为众多小型化设备提供超低功耗的通信物联网(IoT)的需求激增。尽管科研人员已开始为这些网络设计通信协议,但缺乏一个低功耗、高能效软件无线电(SDR)开发平台实现快速实施和实验评估。现有SDR平台只能在有源场景下工作良好,但不适用于硬件条件和能量高度受限的小型化IoT设备。本文率先尝试实现一种超低功耗SDR平台,可满足超低功耗甚至无源物联网节点的通信研发需求。为实现这个目标,将μW级背向散射通信技术有效集成到SDR平台,避免使用高耗能有源射频前端器件。设计了一个包含能量收集和功率管理的新颖电路,并提出消除背向散射造成的谐波和镜像频率干扰方法。评估了不同调制方式下的SDR性能,实现了100 kb/s的高通信速率,该节点在唤醒状态能耗低于200 μW,在睡眠状态下能耗为10 μW。利用该平台进行一个铁路检查案例研究,在真实环境中且距离为50米时,实现1 kb/s的无源数据传输效率。此外,提供智能工厂和物流配送两个案例,探索所提平台的应用。
