The unregulated commercialization of stem cell treatments: a global perspective

摘要: Research into the biological properties and clinical potential of stem cells has spurred strong public investment, industry development, media coverage, and patient interest in recent years. To date, however, few clinical applications of demonstrated safety and efficacy have been developed with the exception of uses of hematopoietic stem cells in the treatment of diseases of the blood and immune systems. This lack of an evidence basis notwithstanding, hundreds of companies and private clinics around the world now sell putative stem cell treatments for an enormously broad range of medical and quality-of-life conditions. This represents a major challenge for legitimate scientists working in the field, for authorities seeking to protect their constituencies, and for patients and consumers targeted by such companies’ marketing strategies. In this review, I provide an overview of the global industry in pseudomedical stem cell treatments, with an investigation of claims in a single disease area (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), and make recommendations for the introduction and enforcement of appropriate regulatory responses to this problem.

Pathway to energy technical innovation and commercialization based on Internet plus DES

摘要: The distributed energy system (DES) is a type of energy cascade utilization on the client side or close to the client, and it has become an important option of global energy transformation. In China, based on the experience of demonstration projects, the DES is now being commercialized. Under the new opportunity of energy production and consumption promoted by the national “Internet Plus” action plan, the development of the DES was reviewed in this paper; four categories of market demand and five key issues for DES deployment were analyzed; five types of potential DES users and five key points of technical path implementation proposed based on many years of engineering practices and hundreds of project case studies were proposed. 4E elements should be used to evaluate and choose the project and lead the innovation model of DES by energy production and consumption revolution with the sustainable development of the Internet plus DES. The future innovation models include intelligent energy modularity and menu-type services with the demands of the client side, and the kind of new thinking for DES services that “you are in charge of your own energy production and consumption, while we are also at service when needed for installation and maintenance.” The aim of innovation mode is to give the energy sovereign back to the people, and form a perfect Internet plus DES ecosystem.

摘要:

近年来在欧美国家和地区出现了一批基于热化学平台、糖平台和羧酸盐平台的新型液、气生物燃料企业。其原料和技术路线与先前第一代生物燃油乃至第二代纤维素乙醇所采用的水解-发酵或酯交换工艺完全不同。突出的特点是使用木质纤维类原料,因而能将原来不能充分利用的木质素及半纤维素所含的能量(约占总能的四成)也转化入最终的生物合成油/气之中。从而为大规模利用林木类废弃/剩余物、能源林/灌木和木变油/气提供了前所未有的机遇。当前这些技术绝大部分已通过中试和示范规模的验证,经济可行性较强,正处于大规模产业化的前夜。用它们制取的多种先进生物燃料还有两个非常大的优点,即均属于所谓的“直接使用”类燃料,能以任何比例与常规汽、柴油掺混,或完全单独用于现有的发动机(不用改装发动机),亦无需像乙醇那样须有专用的储运设施;且均有70 %~90 %的CO2减排效果。我国在此领域也出现了好的苗头,在迎接全球生物能源第二波浪潮的激烈竞争中须也能够占有一席之地。

Status of domestic gasification technology in China

摘要: Five domestic gasification technologies in China were presented and reviewed, including opposed multi-burner (OMB) gasification technology of coal water slurry (CWS), oxygen staged gasification technology, two-stage dry feed entrained flow gasification, pulverized coal gasification process of HT-L, and ash agglomerating fluidized bed gasification. The former four technologies belong to pressurized entrained flow gasification technology. The process description, technology characteristics, research and development process, performance indexes and commercialization progress of these technologies were mainly discussed.

Monte Carlo simulation of the PEMFC catalyst layer

摘要: The performance of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is greatly controlled by the structure of the catalyst layer. Low catalyst utilization is still a significant obstacle to the commercialization of the PEMFC. In order to get a fundamental understanding of the electrode structure and to find the limiting factor in the low catalyst utilization, it is necessary to develop the mechanical model on the effect of catalyst layer structure on the catalyst utilization and the performance of the PEMFC. In this work, the structure of the catalyst layer is studied based on the lattice model with the Monte Carlo simulation. The model can predict the effects of some catalyst layer components, such as Pt/C catalyst, electrolyte and gas pores, on the utilization of the catalyst and the cell performance. The simulation result shows that the aggregation of conduction grains can greatly affect the degree of catalyst utilization. The better the dispersion of the conduction grains, the larger the total effective area of the catalyst is. To achieve higher utilization, catalyst layer components must be distributed by means of engineered design, which can prevent aggregation.

当前,在应对全球能源枯竭与环境恶化之际,可持续且环境友好的可再生能源正迎来重要的发展机遇。以二次电池为代表的电能存储(EES)技术,可实现绿色新能源安全且经济有效的存储和转化,被视为可平抑可再生能源间歇性并实现稳定并网输入的最佳解决方案。钠离子电池(SIB),受益于钠资源的丰富
性及低成本,是下一代大规模电化学存储系统最具应用前景的选择之一。本文详细讨论了锂离子电池(LIB)和钠离子电池在不同应用场景下的主要区别,并描述了当前对钠离子电池的理解。通过比较锂离子电池、铅酸电池(LAB)和钠离子电池之间的技术发展情况,进一步揭示钠离子电池的优势。本文以基于钠离子电池技术所取得的商业化成就为文章亮点,重点介绍了五家钠离子电池企业和相应的钠离子电池产品,以及各自的钠离子电池化学与技术。最后,讨论了下一代钠离子电池商业化的前景与挑战。
