Enhanced wear prediction of tunnel boring machine disc cutters for accurate remaining useful life estimation

摘要: In tunnel construction with tunnel boring machines (TBMs), accurate prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of disc cutters is critical for timely maintenance and replacement to avoid delays and cost overruns. This paper introduces a novel hybrid model, integrating fundamental and data-driven approaches, to enhance wear prediction of TBM disc cutters and enable accurate RUL estimation. The fundamental model is improved by incorporating composite wear mechanisms and load estimation techniques, showcasing superior prediction accuracy compared to single-mechanism models. Additionally, the hybrid model innovatively incorporates a data-driven supplementary residual term into the improved fundamental model, leading to a high-performance wear prediction model. Using actual field data from a highway tunnel project in Shenzhen, the performance of the hybrid model is rigorously tested and compared with pure fundamental and data-driven models. The hybrid model outperforms the other models, achieving the highest accuracy in predicting TBM disc cutter wear (mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.53, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.64). Furthermore, this study thoroughly analyzes the hybrid model’s generalization capability, revealing significant impacts of geological conditions on prediction accuracy. The model’s generalization capability is also improved by expanding and updating the data sets. The RUL estimation results provided by the hybrid model are straightforward and effective, making it a valuable tool by which construction staff can monitor TBM disc cutters.

An adaptive data-driven method for accurate prediction of remaining useful life of rolling bearings

A novel data-driven method based on Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and distance evaluation technique (DET) is proposed to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of rolling bearings. The data sets are clustered by GMM to divide all data sets into several health states adaptively and reasonably. The number of clusters is determined by the minimum description length principle. Thus, either the health state of the data sets or the number of the states is obtained automatically. Meanwhile, the abnormal data sets can be recognized during the clustering process and removed from the training data sets. After obtaining the health states, appropriate features are selected by DET for increasing the classification and prediction accuracy. In the prediction process, each vibration signal is decomposed into several components by empirical mode decomposition. Some common statistical parameters of the components are calculated first and then the features are clustered using GMM to divide the data sets into several health states and remove the abnormal data sets. Thereafter, appropriate statistical parameters of the generated components are selected using DET. Finally, least squares support vector machine is utilized to predict the RUL of rolling bearings. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method reliably predicts the RUL of rolling bearings.

Two-phase early prediction method for remaining useful life of lithium-ion batteries based on a neural

摘要: Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in transportation, energy storage, and other fields. The prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium batteries not only provides a reference for health management but also serves as a basis for assessing the residual value of the battery. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the RUL of LIBs, a two-phase RUL early prediction method combining neural network and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed. In the initial phase, the features related to the capacity degradation of LIBs are utilized to train the neural network model, which is used to predict the initial cycle lifetime of 124 LIBs. The Pearson coefficient’s two most significant characteristic factors and the predicted normalized lifetime form a 3D space. The Euclidean distance between the test dataset and each cell in the training dataset and validation dataset is calculated, and the shortest distance is considered to have a similar degradation pattern, which is used to determine the initial Dual Exponential Model (DEM). In the second phase, GPR uses the DEM as the initial parameter to predict each test set’s early RUL (ERUL). By testing four batteries under different working conditions, the RMSE of all capacity estimation is less than 1.2%, and the accuracy percentage (AP) of remaining life prediction is more than 98%. Experiments show that the method does not need human intervention and has high prediction accuracy.

摘要:

文章综述了笔者及所在科研组近年来在化工静设备,如热交换器、塔器、反应器、工业炉、储槽、储罐(球罐)、压力容器和管道等的材料损伤和寿命预测技术领域的研究进展。由于各种设备结构不同,工况条件各异,导致材料损伤的机理也不相同。文章从它们的共性问题和方法论高度进行了研究。内容包括:①按照方法论要求,提出了处理工程参数不确定性问题的途径;②用定量金相分析方法揭示金属材料服役后微观组织变化、确定其损伤程度并预测寿命。理论成果的应用取得了工程实际的成效,并获重要社会效益和经济效益。

摘要: Due to its fascinating and tunable optoelectronic properties, semiconductor nanomaterials are the best choices for multidisciplinary applications. Particularly, the use of semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the promising ways to harness solar energy for useful applications in the field of energy and environment. In recent years, metal oxide-based tailored semiconductor photocatalysts have extensively been used for photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into fuels and other useful products utilizing solar energy. This is very significant not only from renewable energy consumption but also from reducing global warming point of view. Such current research activities are promising for a better future of society. The present mini-review is focused on recent developments (2–3 years) in metal oxide semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts-based photo-electrochemical conversion of CO2 into fuels and other useful products. First, general mechanism of photo-electrochemical conversion of CO2 into fuels or other useful products has been discussed. Then, various metal oxide-based emerging hybrid photocatalysts including tailoring of their morphological, compositional, and optoelectronic properties have been discussed with emphasis on their role in enhancing photo-electrochemical efficienty. Afterwards, mechanism of their photo-electrochemical reactions and applications in CO2 conversion into fuels/other useful products have been discussed. Finally, challenges and future prospects have been discussed followed by a summary.

Design of composite flywheel rotor

摘要: A design method for a flywheel rotor composed of a composite rim and a metal hub is proposed by studying the connection between the rotor and the driving machine. The influence of some factors such as the rotor material, configuration, connection, and fracture techniques on energy density is analyzed. The results show that the ratio of the inner radius to outer radius of the rim is the key factor, and is determined by the rim material. Optimizing the hub can further efficiently improve energy density. The composite flywheel rotor is produced and its rotation stress has been tested at the speed of 20 krpm. The emulation results are consistent with testing results, which proves that the introduced design method is useful.

Whole-life Thinking and Engineering the Future

摘要: Whole-life thinking for engineers working on the built environment has become more important in a fast changing world. Whole-life thinking is not new, every project attempts to balance the initial capital cost with the operating and maintenance cost of an asset. Engineers are increasingly concerned with complex systems, in which the parts interact with each other and with the outside world in many ways — the relationships between the parts determine how the system behaves. Systems thinking provides one approach to developing a more robust whole-life approach. Systems thinking is a process of understanding how things influence one another within a wider perspective. Complexity, chaos, and risk are endemic in all major projects. New approaches are needed to produce more reliable whole-life predictions. Best value, rather than lowest cost, can be achieved by using whole-life appraisal as a part of the design and delivery strategy.

Synthesis of Intermittent-Motion Linkages with Slight Difference in Length Between Links

The design of intermittent-motion linkages using traditional methods is usually complicated. In this paper, (1) a new method for realizing intermittent motion, using linkages with a slight difference in length between links, is studied; (2) some new types of intermittent-motion linkages and their software for visual analysis and design are developed; and (3) influences of some design parameters on intermittent-motion characteristics are clarified. Results confirmed that the theory and the software are useful, making the synthesis of intermittent-motion linkages clear and easy.

Comparison on End-of-Life strategies of WEEE in China based on LCA

摘要: As the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) are upgraded more frequently in China, a large quantity of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) was and will be generated. It becomes an urgent issue to develop and adopt an effective End-of-Life (EoL) strategy for EEE in order to balance the resource recovery and environmental impacts. In an EoL strategy hierarchy for EEE, reuse strategy is usually deemed to be prior to materials recovery and other strategies. But in practice, the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies are always context-dependent. Therefore, main EoL strategies for EEE in China need to be evaluated in environment and resources aspects from the life cycle perspective. In this study, the obsolete refrigerator and Power Supply Unit (PSU) of desktop PC are both taken as the target products. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is applied to assess the environmental impacts of different EoL scenarios in China: Unit Reuse Scenario (URS), Component Reuse Scenario (CRS) and Materials Recovery Scenario (MRS). The LCA results show that the EoL strategies hierarchy is reasonable for the part of computer, but not necessarily suitable for obsolete refrigerators. When the policy makers promote or demote one EoL strategy especially reuse, it is necessary to take subsequent impacts into consideration.

A comparison of production system life cycle models

Companies today need to keep up with the rapidly changing market conditions to stay competitive. The main issues in this paper are related to a company’s market and its competitors. The prediction of market behavior is helpful for a manufacturing enterprise to build efficient production systems. However, these predictions are usually not reliable. A production system is required to adapt to changing markets, but such requirement entails higher cost. Hence, analyzing different life cycle models of the production system is necessary. In this paper, different life cycle models of the production system are compared to evaluate the distinctive features and the limitations of each model. Furthermore, the difference between product life cycle and production life cycle is summarized, and the effect of product life cycle on production life cycle is explained. Finally, a production system life cycle model, along with key activities to be performed in each stage, is proposed specifically for the manufacturing sector.

Bayes estimation of residual life by fusing multisource information

Residual life estimation is essential for reliability engineering. Traditional methods may experience difficulties in estimating the residual life of products with high reliability, long life, and small sample. The Bayes model provides a feasible solution and can be a useful tool for fusing multisource information. In this study, a Bayes model is proposed to estimate the residual life of products by fusing expert knowledge, degradation data, and lifetime data. The linear Wiener process is used to model degradation data, whereas lifetime data are described via the inverse Gaussian distribution. Therefore, the joint maximum likelihood (ML) function can be obtained by combining lifetime and degradation data. Expert knowledge is used according to the maximum entropy method to determine the prior distributions of parameters, thereby making this work different from existing studies that use non-informative prior. The discussion and analysis of different types of expert knowledge also distinguish our research from others. Expert knowledge can be classified into three categories according to practical engineering. Methods for determining prior distribution by using the aforementioned three types of data are presented. The Markov chain Monte Carlo is applied to obtain samples of the parameters and to estimate the residual life of products due to the complexity of the joint ML function and the posterior distribution of parameters. Finally, a numerical example is presented. The effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method are validated by comparing it with residual life estimation that uses non-informative prior. Then, its accuracy and correctness are proven via simulation experiments.
