Living biological systems have excellent sensing, intelligence, and actuation abilities that are irreproducible by artificial systems based on electromechanical technologies. Directly utilizing the desired functions of natural organisms by merging biological systems with traditional electromechanical systems may be an effective approach to develop a new type of robot: bio-syncretic robots, which combine the advantages of living biological systems (e.g., high energy-conversion efficiency, high energy density, multiple degree of freedom, biocompatibility, and potential self-repair) with the strengths of electromechanical systems (e.g., high strength, high accuracy, and excellent repeatability.
