Abstract: Run-length limited (RLL) codes can facilitate reliable data transmission and provide flicker-free illumination in (VLC) systems. We propose novel high-rate RLL codes, which can improve error performance and mitigate flicker. Two RLL coding schemes are developed by designing the to further enhance the coding gain by improving the and using the state-splitting method to realize small state numbers. In our RLL code design, the construction of the codeword set is critical. This codeword set is designed considering the set-partitioning algorithm criterion. The flicker control and of the various proposed RLL codes are described in detail, and the flicker performances of different codes are compared based on histograms. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the proposed RLL codes in on-off keying modulation VLC systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RLL codes achieve superior error performance to the existing RLL codes.

Identification of structural parameters and boundary conditions using a minimum number of measurement

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 6,   Pages 1331-1348 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0686-4

Abstract: This article proposes a novel methodology that uses mathematical and numerical models of a structure to build a data set and determine crucial nodes that possess the highest sensitivity. Regression surfaces between the structural parameters and structural output features, represented by the natural frequencies of the structure and local transmissibility, are built using the numerical data set. A description of a possible experimental application is provided, where sensors are mounted at crucial nodes, and the natural frequencies and local transmissibility at each natural frequency are determined from the power spectral density and the power spectral density ratios of the sensor responses, respectively. An inverse iterative process is then applied to identify the structural parameters by matching the experimental features with the available parameters in the myriad numerical data set. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed methodology. The results reveal that the method was able to accurately identify the boundary coefficients and physical parameters of the Euler-Bernoulli beam as well as a highway bridge model with elastic foundations using only two measurement points. It is expected that the proposed method will have practical applications in the identification and analysis of restored structural systems with unknown parameters and boundary coefficients.

Cracking resistance performance of super vertical-distance pumped SFRC

JIANG Jinyang, SUN Wei, ZHANG Yunsheng, CHEN Cuicui, WANG Jing

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 179-183 doi: 10.1007/s11709-008-0018-6

Abstract: The mix ratio of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) was optimized using the principles that workability must meet the pumping demand and anti-cracking performance should be optimal. The effect of SFRC on the initial cracking load, the ultimate load and the crack width of the reinforced concrete (RC) member were analyzed in this paper. It was found that the admixture had good preservation of moisture and adhesion and the fibers distributed homogeneously in one hour out of the machine. According to the pumping results, the SFRC could be pumped vertically up to 306 m. Based on the standard computation formula of cracks, the maximum crack width of an RC member with 0.8% steel fiber (by volume) is about 32% lower than that of standard RC member. Through an experimental research on full-scale model tests for the steel and concrete composite anchorage zone on a pylon, the SFRC not only remarkably increases the crack resistance and the ultimate load, but the initial load also improves 33% approximately. It is also indicated that plastic shrinkage cracking of SFRC in which volume fraction of steel fibers is 0.8% can be restrained obviously and the unrestrained drying shrinkage can be diminished by about 50% at early age. The results confirmed that the SFRC can lessen the shrinkage crack of concrete and enhance markedly the direct tensile strength. Therefore, the SFRC can solve the key question of crack resistance for the anchorage zone of a bridge tower.
