Visualization of force networks in 2D dense granular materials

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 109-115 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0003-8

Abstract: Dense granular matter is a conglomeration of discrete solid and closely packed particles. As subjected to external loadings, the stress is largely transmitted by heavily stressed chains of particles forming a sparse network of larger contact forces. To understand the structure and evolution of force chains, a photoelastic technique was improved for determining stresses and strains in the assemblies of photoelastic granular disks in this paper. A two-dimensional vertical slab was designed. It contains 7200 polydispersed photoelastic disks and is subjected to a localized probe penetrating at the top of the slab to mimic the cone penetration test. The interparticle contact force distribution was found a peak around the mean value, a roughly exponential tail for greater force and a dip toward zero for smaller force. The force chain network around the probe tip was depicted, and the contact angle distribution of particles in force chains was found to be well aligned in the directions of major principal stress.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 71-78 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0083-5

Abstract: In this paper, 2D and 3D models of the dam together with the foundation and abutments were establishedIt was disclosed that the discharge fluxes obtained from 2D and 3D analyses are not similar, and thedischarge flux in 3D model is about four times that of the 2D model. Also, the 3D model locates the phreatic surface somewhat higher than the 2D model. This means that the 2D model estimates lower pore water pressure pattern in comparison with the 3D model

Kd-tree and quad-tree decompositions for declustering of 2D range queries over uncertain space

Ahmet SAYAR,Süleyman EKEN,Okan ÖZTÜRK

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 2,   Pages 98-108 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400165

Abstract: We present a study to show the possibility of using two well-known space partitioning and indexing techniques, kd trees and quad trees, in declustering applications to increase input/output (I/O) parallelization and reduce spatial data processing times. This parallelization enables time-consuming computational geometry algorithms to be applied efficiently to big spatial data rendering and querying. The key challenge is how to balance the spatial processing load across a large number of worker nodes, given significant performance heterogeneity in nodes and processing skews in the workload.

Progressive collapse of 2D reinforced concrete structures under sudden column removal

El Houcine MOURID, Said MAMOURI, Adnan IBRAHIMBEGOVIC

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 6,   Pages 1387-1402 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0645-0

Abstract: Once a column in building is removed due to gas explosion, vehicle impact, terrorist attack, earthquake or any natural disaster, the loading supported by removed column transfers to neighboring structural elements. If these elements are unable to resist the supplementary loading, they continue to fail, which leads to progressive collapse of building. In this paper, an efficient strategy to model and simulate the progressive collapse of multi-story reinforced concrete structure under sudden column removal is presented. The strategy is subdivided into several connected steps including failure mechanism creation, MBS dynamic analysis and dynamic contact simulation, the latter is solved by using conserving/decaying scheme to handle the stiff nonlinear dynamic equations. The effect of gravity loads, structure-ground contact, and structure-structure contact are accounted for as well. The main novelty in this study consists in the introduction of failure function, and the proper manner to control the mechanism creation of a frame until its total failure. Moreover, this contribution pertains to a very thorough investigation of progressive collapse of the structure under sudden column removal. The proposed methodology is applied to a six-story frame, and many different progressive collapse scenarios are investigated. The results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed strategy.
