Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2009, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 103-110 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0032-y

Abstract: Optical fiber sensors have been successfully implemented in aeronautics, mechanical systems, and medical applications. Civil structures pose further challenges in monitoring mainly due to their large dimensions, diversity and heterogeneity of materials involved, and hostile construction environment. This article provides a summary of basic principles pertaining to practical health monitoring of civil engineering structures with optical fiber sensors. The issues discussed include basic sensor principles, strain transfer mechanism, sensor packaging, sensor placement in construction environment, and reliability and survivability of the sensors.

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2009, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 316-319 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0040-y

Abstract: In this paper, using fiber Bragg grating (FBG), a corrosion sensor for monitoring steel rebars embeddedfact that the volume and diameter of a rebar embedded in concrete will enlarge due to corrosion, an FBGdiameter leads to the increase in fiber strain, which can be measured by the shift of the wavelength of FBGThe corrosion extent can be quantitatively evaluated through the change in the wavelength of FBG.
