Electromagnetic induction mapping at varied soil moisture reveals field-scale soil textural patterns and gravel lenses

ROBINSON, Janis BOETTINGER, Scott B. JONES

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 135-145 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2017143

Abstract: Knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil textural properties is important for determining soil moisture storage and soil hydraulic transport properties. Capturing field heterogeneity without exhaustive sampling and costly sample analysis is difficult. Our objective was to employ electromagnetic induction (EMI) mapping in low apparent electrical conductivity (EC ) soils at varying soil water contents to capture time invariant properties such as soil texture. Georeferenced EC measurements were taken using a ground conductivity meter on six different days where volumetric water content ( ) varied from 0.11 to 0.23. The 50 m × 50 m field included a subsurface gravelly patch in an otherwise homogeneous silt-loam alluvial soil. Ordinary block kriging predicted EC at unsampled areas to produce 1-m resolution maps. Temporal stability analysis was used to divide the field into three distinct EC regions. Subsequent ground-truthing confirmed the lowest conductivity region correlated with coarse textured soil parent materials associated with a former high-energy alluvial depositional area. Combining maps using temporal stability analysis gives the clearest image of the textural difference. These maps could be informative for modeling, experimental design, sensor placement and targeted zone management strategies in soil science, ecology, hydrology, and agricultural applications.

Enhanced disinfection of Escherichia coli and bacteriophage MS2 in water using a copper and silver loaded titanium dioxide nanowire membrane

BRASTAD, Qianyi ZHANG, Rebecca ROBINSON, Zhen HE, Ying LI

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 4, doi: 10.1007/s11783-016-0854-x

Abstract: A novel photocatalytic Ag-Cu-TiO nanowire membrane was fabricated. Bacteria and virus disinfection was improved by co-depositing Ag and Cu onto membrane. Synergetic photocatalytic effects and free metal ions of Ag and Cu contribute to disinfection. 7.68 log removal of and 4.02 log removal of bacteriophage MS2 were achieved. Titanium dioxide (TiO ) is a widely used photocatalyst that has been demonstrated for microorganism disinfection in drinking water. In this study, a new material with a novel structure, silver and copper loaded TiO nanowire membrane (Cu-Ag-TiO ) was prepared and evaluated for its efficiency to inactivate and bacteriophage MS2. Enhanced photo-activated bactericidal and virucidal activities were obtained by the Cu-Ag-TiO membrane than by the TiO , Ag-TiO and Cu-TiO membranes under both dark and UV light illumination. The better performance was attributed to the synergies of enhanced membrane photoactivity by loading silver and copper on the membrane and the synergistic effect between the free silver and copper ions in water. At the end of a 30 min test of dead-end filtration under 254 nm UV irradiation, the Cu-Ag-TiO membrane was able to obtain an removal of 7.68 log and bacteriophage MS2 removal of 4.02 log, which have met the US EPA standard. The free metal ions coming off the membrane have concentrations of less than 10 ppb in the water effluent, far below the US EPA maximum contaminant level for silver and copper ions in drinking water. Therefore, the photo-activated disinfection by the Cu-Ag-TiO membrane is a viable technique for meeting drinking water treatment standards of microbiological water purifiers.

Experimental study on GFRP pipes under axial compression

QIAN Peng, FENG Peng, YE Lieping

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 1,   Pages 73-78 doi: 10.1007/s11709-008-0013-y

Abstract: Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) is suitable for structures in corrosive environment and long-span light-weight structures due to its high-strength, light-weight, and anti-corrosive qualities. The behavior of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) pipes, which are the members of long-span lattice structures, under axial compression was investigated by tests. Short GFRP pipes were first tested to determine the basic mechanical properties. Then the stability of long GFRP pipes was studied by axially compressive tests in four groups with different slenderness ratios, twelve specimens totally. Based on the results of the tests and literature, the formula of the buckling load of composite pipes under axially compressive load was presented based on Perry formula. It can well predict the buckling failure load GFRP pipe under axial compression.

Review of recent guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock

Jin-Nong ZHANG MD, Bo PENG BA, Jamile WOODS MD, Wei PENG MD, PhD,

Frontiers of Medicine 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 54-58 doi: 10.1007/s11684-010-0008-7

Abstract: Severe sepsis and septic shock affect millions of patients and are major causes of mortality worldwide. Advancements in treatment and disease management led to a decline in in-hospital mortality from 27.8% (1979–1984) to 17.9% (1995 to 2000). In this article, we systemically review recent guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock published in 2008 by the International Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines Committee. The 2008 Surviving Sepsis guidelines recommend protocolized resuscitation with goals to maintain central venous pressure≥8–12mmHg, mean arterial pressure≥65mmHg, urine output≥0.5mL·kg·h and central venous oxygen saturation≥70% (or mixed venous≥65%). Further fluid administration, transfusion of packed red blood cells to achieve a hematocrit of≥30% and/or infusion of dobutamine max 20µg·kg·min are advised if venous O saturations remain below 70%. In patients with decreased ventricular compliance or mechanical ventilation, a target central venous pressure of 12–15mmHg is recommended. Intravenous antibiotic administration within the first hour of recognizing severe sepsis and septic shock is essential, while use of corticosteroids in sepsis is controversial. The mechanisms by which activated protein C improves clinical outcomes in sepsis are unknown. Therapy with activated protein C is approved for patients with severe sepsis and an increased risk of death [Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II)>25]. Bicarbonate therapy is discouraged. Intravenous insulin should be used to control hyperglycemia in patients with severe sepsis following stabilization in the intensive care unit.

Heat prices for public buildings in Tianjin

Boyuan HAO,Zhe TIAN,Yan DING,Peng PENG

Frontiers in Energy 2016, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 249-259 doi: 10.1007/s11708-016-0412-z

Abstract: Energy-saving awareness of heat users and heating enterprises can be stimulated by implementing heat metering for public buildings and by establishing scientific and reasonable policies for heat prices in China. In this paper, a two-part heat price for public buildings in Tianjin is introduced, which divides the heat price into a basic part and a metering part. According to the statistical analysis of information collected from two pilot heating enterprises, the specific heat load for public buildings in Tianjin is calculated, and three candidate schemes of heat price are proposed. A simulation of heat cost is also conducted, and the benefits for both heat users and heating enterprises are balanced. Finally, the two-part heat price for public buildings in Tianjin is determined: the basic heat price is recommended to be 20 CNY/m , and the metering heat price is recommended to be 76.10 CNY/GJ. Such a price could be implemented in the initial stage of heat metering for public buildings in Tianjin.

Desertification: China provides a solution to a global challenge

Yingshuang BAO, Leilei CHENG, Yanfeng BAO, Liu YANG, Lina JIANG, Chao LONG, Zhe KONG, Peng PENG, Jun

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 402-413 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2017187

Abstract: Desertification has been caused by various factors and is a major environmental problem and development bottleneck faced by the world. It is also a serious threat to ecological security and to sustainable economic and social development. As a stubborn world problem, focused on by the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goal 15.3, China aims to combat desertification by implementing the “eight-column four-beam” strategy, and also suggest the “four-medicine” approach for global desertification governance. This includes the development of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification protocol, unified global compliance and compliance metrics; building a global observation network, and monitoring land changes based on remote sense; preparing the global natural desert (heritage) list, leaving the original deserts for future generations; initiating the global action of combating desertification, and striving to achieve a land degradation-neutral world by 2030.

Comparison and modeling of two biofilm processes applied to decentralized wastewater treatment

Guanglei QIU, Yonghui SONG, Peng YUAN, Liancheng XIANG, Jianfeng PENG, Ping ZENG,

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 412-420 doi: 10.1007/s11783-009-0141-1

Abstract: In order to control water pollution in the rapidly urbanizing South China area, biological contact oxidation (BCO) process and biological aerated filter (BAF) process were applied in a pilot-scale experiment for decentralized wastewater treatment. An investigation to find the optimal parameters of the two biofilm systems was conducted on hydraulic loading, organic loading, and aeration rate. The results indicated that the water reuse criteria required a maximum hydraulic and organic loading of 30.0 m/(m·d) and 4.0 kg COD/(m·d), respectively, as well as a minimum effluent DO of 4.0 mg/L. The utilization of a new media allowed BAF to perform better than BCO. The kinetic description of the COD removal process for BAF and BCO are Yang ZHANG,Zifu LI,Ibrahim B MAHMOOD. [J]. Front. Molecular markers and pathogenically targeted therapy in non-small cell lung cancer

Bo PENG BA , Jinnong ZHANG MD , Jamile S. WOODS MD , Wei PENG MD, PhD

Frontiers of Medicine 2009, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 245-255 doi: 10.1007/s11684-009-0044-3

Abstract: Lung cancer is one of the most common human cancers and the number one cancer killer in the United States. In general, lung cancer includes small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but NSCLC accounts for approximately 90% of lung cancer. The early diagnosis and therapy of lung cancer still presents a big challenge because validated screening tools, which can improve current early detection to reduce mortality from lung cancer, do not exist. Over the last decade, molecular genetic abnormalities have been described in NSCLC, including chromosomal aberrations, overexpression of oncogenes, and deletion and/or mutations in tumor suppressor genes. These molecular markers in NSCLC demonstrated close associations with the development of lung cancer such as Ras, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR, or c-erbB-1), HER2 (c-erbB-2), c-Met, and Bcl-2. Therefore, this information may be applied for early cancer detection, classification, novel targeted therapy, and prognosis in NSCLC. Recent clinical data have revealed that targeted therapy might be the second-line therapy as an alternative approach. Currently, the targeted therapies are mainly focused on two lung cancer pathways, the EGFR and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathways. Some clinical trials are very encouraging, but some of them are not. However, these trials have not identified a subgroup of NSCLC with biomarkers. Therefore, it is very important to select NSCLC patients with biomarkers to match targeted agents so that we can further identify effectiveness of targeted therapy in the future.

MicroRNAs and their roles in osteoclast differentiation

Zhuying Xia, Chao Chen, Peng Chen, Hui Xie, Xianghang Luo

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 414-419 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0168-0

Abstract: Osteoclasts, which are derived from monocyte-macrophage precursors, are exclusive bone resorption cells. Limited evidence indicates that a class of small non-coding single-stranded RNAs known as “microRNAs” (miRNAs) is also involved in bone resorption. Although various miRNAs regulate cell proliferation and differentiation, few miRNAs have been reported to play a key role in the regulation of osteoclast differentiation. In this short review, the biology and functional mechanisms of miRNAs in osteoclastogenesis are summarized. The profiling, function, and target prediction of miRNAs are discussed as well.

Factors affecting simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in an SBBR treating domestic wastewater

LI Jun, GU Guowei, PENG Yongzhen, WEI Su

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 246-250 doi: 10.1007/s11783-007-0042-0

Abstract: An aerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) packed with Bauer rings was used to treat real domestic wastewater for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The SBBR is advantageous for creating an anoxic condition, and the biofilm can absorb and store carbon for good nitrification and denitrification. An average concentration of oxygen ranging from 0.8 to 4.0 mg/L was proved very efficient for nitrification and denitrification. Volumetric loads of TN dropped dramatically and effluent TN concentration increased quickly when the concentration of average dissolved oxygen was more than 4.0 mg/L. The efficiency of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) increased with increasing thickness of the biofilm. The influent concentration hardly affected the TN removal efficiency, but the effluent TN increased with increasing influent concentration. It is suggested that a subsequence for denitrification be added or influent amount be decreased to meet effluent quality requirements. At optimum operating parameters, the TN removal efficiency of 74% 82% could be achieved.

Development of environmental management system in China's financial sector

CHANG Miao, PENG Lijuan, WANG Shiwen

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 172-177 doi: 10.1007/s11783-008-0032-x

Abstract: The establishment of the environmental management system in the financial sector can be effectively promoted through the introduction of the environmental protection concept and its implementation by the financial sector. The impact of a sustainable development system on the sector is analyzed in this article from three aspects: environmental risk assessment, financing support for environmental protection projects, and financial services to environmentally friendly corporations and individuals. Influential factors on the development of the environmental management system in China’s financial sector are discussed from the perspective of various entities such as financial institutions, financial regulation authorities, environmental protection departments, corporations, and the public. It is pointed out that China’s financial sector is now in the transitional phase from a defensive attitude to a preventive attitude. Strengthening governmental guidance, the supervision of regulators as well as public awareness of environmental protection should be used to enhance the initiative in the development of the environmental management system in the Chinese financial sector.
