Elastic modulus and thermal stress in coating during heat cycling with different substrate shapes

Daniel GAONA,Alfredo VALAREZO

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2015, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 294-300 doi: 10.1007/s11465-015-0351-0

Abstract:

The elastic modulus of a deposit (Ed) can be obtained by monitoring the temperature (?T) and curvature (?k) of a one-side coated long plate, namely, a one-dimensional (1D) deformation model. The aim of this research is to design an experimental setup that proves whether a 1D deformation model can be scaled for complex geometries. The setup includes a laser displacement sensor mounted on a robotic arm capable of scanning a specimen surface and measuring its deformation. The reproducibility of the results is verified by comparing the present results with Stony Brook University Laboratory’s results. The ?k-?T slope error is less than 8%, and the Ed estimation error is close to 2%. These values reveal the repeatability of the experiments. Several samples fabricated with aluminum as the substrate and 100MXC nanowire (Fe and Cr alloy) as the deposit are analyzed and compared with those in finite element (FE) simulations. The linear elastic behavior of 1D (flat long plate) and 2D (squared plate) specimens during heating/cooling cycles is demonstrated by the high linearity of all ?k-?T curves (over 97%). The Ed values are approximately equal for 1D and 2D analyses, with a median of 96 GPa and standard deviation of 2 GPa. The correspondence between the experimental and simulated results for the 1D and 2D specimens reveals that deformation and thermal stress in coated specimens can be predicted regardless of specimen geometry through FE modeling and by using the experimental value of Ed. An example of a turbine-blade-shaped substrate is presented to validate the approach.

Enlarged interlayer of separator coating enabling high-performance lithiumsulfur batteries

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2024, Volume 18, Issue 2, doi: 10.1007/s11705-024-2385-5

Abstract: Lithiumsulfur batteries have been intensively studied due to their high theoretical energy density and abundant sulfur resources. However, their commercial application is hindered by the low redox kinetics and high sulfur losses. In principle, in the design of cathodes and separators, the adsorption toward lithium-polysulfides should be enhanced and the conversion of soluble high-order lithium-polysulfides should be catalyzed. Herein, a KV3O8·0.75H2O separator is designed as an effective lithium-polysulfides mediator in lithiumsulfur batteries. The intercalated K+ would enlarge the interlayer spacing of vanadium oxides, preventing the collapse of the layer structure and improving the electrical/ion conductivity of the interface. Moreover, the KV3O8·0.75H2O modified separator possess a prior adsorption and high redox kinetics toward lithium-polysulfides due to the enhanced diffusion kinetics, which guarantees the high-rate capability and efficient utilization of sulfur. As a result, lithiumsulfur batteries exhibit a high capacity of 1362 mAh·g1 and a long lifespan with a low capacity loss of 0.073% per cycle. This work may provide an alternative way to establish a functional separator to balance the adsorption and conversion of polysulfides during the redox back and forth.

Enhancing the photoelectrochemical performance of p-silicon through TiO coating decorated with mesoporous

Frontiers in Energy 2021, Volume 15, Issue 3,   Pages 772-780 doi: 10.1007/s11708-021-0783-7

Abstract: MoS2 is a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction and a good candidate for cocatalyst to enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of Si-based photoelectrode in aqueous electrolytes. The main challenge lies in the optimization of the microstructure of MoS2, to improve its catalytic activity and to construct a mechanically and chemically stable cocatalyst/Si photocathode. In this paper, a highly-ordered mesoporous MoS2 was synthesized and decorated onto a TiO2 protected p-silicon substrate. An additional TiO2 necking was introduced to strengthen the bonding between the MoS2 particles and the TiO2 layer. This meso-MoS2/TiO2/p-Si hybrid photocathode exhibited significantly enhanced PEC performance, where an onset potential of +0.06 V (versus RHE) and a current density of −1.8 mA/cm2 at 0 V (versus RHE) with a Faradaic efficiency close to 100% was achieved in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4. Additionally, this meso-MoS2/TiO2/p-Si photocathode showed an excellent PEC ability and durability in alkaline media. This paper provides a promising strategy to enhance and protect the photocathode through high-performance surface cocatalysts.
