Evaluation of global niobium flow modeling and its market forecasting

Frontiers in Energy 2023, Volume 17, Issue 2,   Pages 286-293 doi: 10.1007/s11708-022-0823-y

Abstract: Metal, as the indispensable material, is functioning the society from technology to the environment. Niobium (Nb) is considered a unique earth metal as it is related to many emerging technologies. The increasing economic growth exerts an increasing pressure on supply, which leads to its significance in the economic sector. However, few papers have addressed Nb sustainability, which forms the scope of this paper in order to start the process of Nb market forecasting based on some previous data and some assumptions. Therefore, this paper will discuss different thoughts in material substitution and the substance flow of Nb throughout a static flow using Nb global data to have a better understanding of the process of Nb from production to end of life. This shall lead to the identification of the market needs to determine its growth which is around 2.5% to 3.0%. Moreover, due to China’s huge Nb consumption which comes from the continuous development that is happening over the years, it will also briefly mention the Nb situation as well as its growth which according to statistics will grow steadily till 2030 by a rate of 4.0% to 6.0%. The results show that there should be some enhancement to Nb recycling potentials out of steel scrap. In addition, there should be more involvement of Nb in different industries as this would lead to less-used materials which can be translated to less environmental impact.

Strategic Concern to Land and Water Resources Allocation, Ecology and Environment Protection and Sustainable

“Water Resources in Northeast China” Project Group,CAE

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 5,   Pages 1-24

Abstract:

Northeast China refers to the region including Liaoning Province, Jilin Province, Heilongjiang Province and the northeastern past of inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, i. e. Chifeng City, Tongliao City, Xing an League and Hulun Buir City. Covering an area of 124×104km2with a population of 119 million, this region features developed industries, biggest forest zone arid best grassland in China. It is the largest commodity grain base as well. However, the decades-long crude production and extensive management has resulted in the decline of part of industries and agriculture and the degradation of environment, such as the exhaustion of the fellable forest; the degeneration, desertification and salinization of grassland; the serious loss of black earth; the pollution of water sesources, the dry up of rivers and the decrease of wetland; the environmental problems in abandoned mining areas. The only choice for reinvigorating the northeast China old industrial base is to change the economic growth pattern timely and build the resource-conservation and environment-friendly society. The author brings forward eight strategic proposals: not increasing the total area of arable land, not decreasing the area of forest, grassland and wetland, and rationally controlling the land for urban and industrial use; tapping the huge potential of agriculture and building China's largest agricultural product base; taking further measures to ensure the sustainable development of the forest industry; promoting the urbanization process and properly address urban water resources crisis and preventing geological disasters in coal mine-based cities; enhancing geological prospecting to consolidate the guarantee of resources; protecting water environment and preventing water from pollution; controlling the use of water for socio-economic purpose in the western part of the region so as to protect the ecological environment; rationally allocating water resources to contribute the harmonious development between man and nature.

Exploring Eco-Hydraulic Engineering

Dong Zheren

Strategic Study of CAE 2007, Volume 9, Issue 1,   Pages 1-7

Abstract:

The dependence on rivers of both humans and ecosystems is high, and humans should share water resources with ecosystems.Hydraulic engineering is one of the stress factors to river ecosystem. It is required toestablish new rules and develop new techniques,so as to enable the consideration of the requirement of thehealth and sustainability of river ecosystem while carrying on hydraulic engineering to meet human demands, thus establishing an ecological friendly hydraulic engineering technical system.

Rhizosphere immunity: targeting the underground for sustainable plant health management

Zhong WEI, Ville-Petri FRIMAN, Thomas POMMIER, Stefan GEISEN, Alexandre JOUSSET, Qirong SHEN

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 317-328 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020346

Abstract:

Managing plant health is a great challenge for modern food production and is further complicated by the lack of common ground between the many disciplines involved in disease control. Here we present the concept of rhizosphere immunity, in which plant health is considered as an ecosystem level property emerging from networks of interactions between plants, microbiota and the surrounding soil matrix. These interactions can potentially extend the innate plant immune system to a point where the rhizosphere immunity can fulfil all four core functions of a full immune system: pathogen prevention, recognition, response and homeostasis. We suggest that considering plant health from a meta-organism perspective will help in developing multidisciplinary pathogen management strategies that focus on steering the whole plant-microbe-soil networks instead of individual components. This might be achieved by bringing together the latest discoveries in phytopathology, microbiome research, soil science and agronomy to pave the way toward more sustainable and productive agriculture.

Three Gorges Project: a project for ecological improvement and environmental protection in Yangtze River Basin

Lu Youmei

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 7,   Pages 9-14

Abstract:

Seeking water and earning their livelihoods is the natural selection of human beings. Like other rivers on the earth, the Yangtze River is the birthplace of human civilization and survival. As an ecosystem, the Yangtze River Basin is evolving under the influences of natural factors and human activities. Because of soil erosion, pollution and human activities, the imbalance of secondary environment is exacerbated and the ecological environment has become more vulnerable. It is urgent to mitigate and prevent the ecological crisis. The practice has proved that implementation of engineering measures is an effective way to improve the ecological environment. The Three Gorges Project (TGP) has a flood control storage capacity of 22.15 billion m3, effectively storing the flood water upstream of Yichang, and protects 15 million people and 1.5 million hm2 farmland. Furthermore, the project can prevent or slow down the sedimentation and shrinkage of the lakes in the middle Yangtze River such as Dongting Lake; with an average annual power generation of about 90 billion kW·h, it can significantly reduce CO2 and harmful gas emission. In general, the construction of TGP is conducive to the ecological and environmental protection in the Yangtze River Basin and China, even the world.
