Engineering Philosophy-based Reflections on Efficient Development of Shale Gas in China

He Liu,Jian-wen Yan,Qing-hai Yang

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2015, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 108-113 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2015030

Abstract: The Shale Gas Revolution began to have a significant impact on global supply and demand of natural gas; also the price trend of natural gas has been greatly affected. This phenomenon raised concerns among natural gas producers and consumers. China has abundant shale gas resources, but the development scale is small while facing problems including weak exploration and evaluation basis, overlapping royalties, complex terrestrial environment, lack of technical practices and accumulation, inadequate management and regulatory mechanisms, etc. To overcome these challenges for large-scale shale gas development, we believe that shale gas development is not only a single technical problem, but a systematic engineering demanding multidisciplinary research that will be bound to spread to humans, nature, and society. Therefore, to ensure the healthy development of China’s shale gas, it is required to coordinate global and local relationships, engineering and community relations, as well as to break up the conflicts between engineering and nature, engineering and economy, along with engineering and society.

The relevance of James Lovelock’s research and philosophy to environmental science and academia

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-023-1639-7

Abstract: James E. Lovelock, famed for his Gaia hypothesis, which views the Earth as a living integrated and interconnected self-regulating system whose equilibrium comes about from complex energy-based interactions and feedback loops, ultimately sustaining life, passed away at the end of July, 2022 at the age of 103. Not only are the adaptive mechanisms of Gaia central to the conversation of environmental homeostasis, they lie at the heart of climate change and global warming. Lovelock is also remembered as the co-inventor of the electron capture detector that eventually allowed for the sensitive detection of chlorofluorocarbons and pesticides. Finally, Lovelock’s free-spirited nature and research independence allow academia to rethink current research’s modus operandi.

Enhancing the management of oil production engineering with philosophical thinking

Liu He

Strategic Study of CAE 2013, Volume 15, Issue 11,   Pages 31-35

Abstract:

In the history of Chinese petroleum industry, the philosophical thinking is always used to guide practice. The Daqing Oilfield was developed based on the philosophical thoughts of Mao Zedong, i.e., On Practice and On Contradictions. Relying on the philosophical thoughts, the management and technology innovationsystem was continuously improved, and the technology management system with Daqing Oilfield characteristics was developed. This paper applies the thoughts of the "Two Theory" in oil production engineering, and analyzes the major challenges and countermeasures for the stable production of 4.0×107 to Daqing Oilfield. The scientific methodology of practice is used to guide the technical schemes and solutions. The "Two Theory" is proved to be effective to guarantee the stable production of 4.0×107 t.
