Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 403-417 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0091-5

Abstract: Soundscape represents a step change in the field of environmental acoustics in that it combines physical, social, and psychological approaches. Although the term soundscape was introduced in the 1960s, significant attention to it has mainly been paid in the last decade or so in the community of environmental acoustics by researchers and recently by practitioners including policy makers. This paper explores the current situation and future challenges in soundscape. Starting with a framework on research and practical needs in soundscape and a brief introduction of some recent/current networks, activities, projects, and publications, this paper then presents a systematic review of recent progress in soundscape research and practice. A short review of the soundscape research in China is also given.

3D finite element analysis of composite noise barrier constructed of polyurethane products

Ben DAEE,Hesham El NAGGAR

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2017, Volume 11, Issue 1,   Pages 100-110 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0364-8

Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural performance of an innovative noise barrier consisting of poly-block, rigid polyurethane foam (RPF) and polyurea. The mechanical characteristics of RPF as well as the flexural resistance of the proposed wall system (poly-wall) were established and presented in another study. The experimental results are used in the current study to develop, calibrate and verify 3D finite element (FE) models of the wall system. The components of the poly-wall including steel rebars, poly-blocks and RPF cores were simulated and then verified using the results of experiments conducted on the wall components. The results of numerical analysis exhibited a satisfactory agreement with the experimental outcomes for the entire wall system. The verified numerical models were then used to conduct a parametric study on the performance of poly-wall models under uniform wind load and gravity load. The findings of the current study confirmed that the structural performance of poly-wall is satisfactory for noise barrier application. Simulation techniques for improvement of the numerical analysis of multi-martial 3D FE models were discussed.

Frontiers of Medicine 2010, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 8-15 doi: 10.1007/s11684-010-0018-5

Abstract: China has been undertaking a profound reform on health care. Although more than 1.16 billion people have been covered by rural and urban medical insurance to date, the level of reimbursement from insurance is very limited, especially for critical diseases such as leukemia. This places heavy economic burdens on patients. Under these circumstances, systems innovation is imperative for the efficient utilization of limited funding. In this respect, certain valuable experience from other countries may prove helpful. The prospective payment system of Diagnosis-related Groups (DRGs), Clinical Paths, and the Comparative Effectiveness Analysis adopted by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE, UK), can be fine tools to reduce medical costs and improve quality of services. Treatments of acute promyelocytic leukemia at Rui-Jin Hospital, and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, can be taken as suitable models to illustrate the crucial role of Clinical Paths in guaranteeing clinical and cost effectiveness of medical services for critical diseases, and to satisfactorily justify the feasibility of DRGs in China.
