Bao Shixing

Strategic Study of CAE 2001, Volume 3, Issue 12,   Pages 21-27

Abstract:

The idea of great architectural scientific department advanced by professor Qian Xuesen, marked a new milestone in the development of modern science and technology system. The great department of architectural science should be divided into three levels as basic theory, basic science and applied technology. The concept of Shan-shui City, he suggested, is a probe for the urban developing pattern of socialist China in the 21st century.

Building Information and Physical Model: A Novel Form of Information Description for Buildings

Yang Qiliang, Xing Jianchun

Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 5,   Pages 222-232 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.07.027

Abstract:

Information is the core element to drive human‒cyber‒physical collaborations and promote the orderly operation of building activities in the entire lifecycle of buildings. More realistic and efficient description and sharing of building information has always been an important theme pursued in the field of architecture. To meet the rapidly growing demand for interactive collaboration between virtual and real building conditions, this study proposes a novel form of information description for buildings, namely a building information and physical model (BIPM), for realizing the true mapping and collaboration from building physical entities to the information space. The BIPM is composed of a building basic information model, a physical model, and an interaction model, and unifies the description of the external geometric attribute information and the internal physical mechanisms of buildings. The theoretical foundation and key technical system of the BIPM are discussed, and the application effectiveness and benefits of the BIPM are demonstrated using building chillers as an example. Furthermore, the application ecologies and values of the BIPM are analyzed. Research suggestions are proposed as follows: (1) deepening the research on BIPM theories and key technologies, (2) formulating serialized BIPM standards and specifications, and (3) developing BIPM building industry software tools to expand the BIPM application ecosystem. This study is expected to provide support for the development of new basic software for the building industry, involving architectural design, construction, operation and maintenance, and urban digital twins.

A New Look at Building Facades as Infrastructure Perspective

Doris Sung

Engineering 2016, Volume 2, Issue 1,   Pages 63-68 doi: 10.1016/J.ENG.2016.01.008

Abstract:

Like the hard surfaces of streets and sidewalks in an urban environment, the vertical and horizontal surface area on the outside of urban buildings contributes to the constant heating of large cities around the world. However, little is done to design this surface to benefit the public sphere. Instead, the facade of a building performs either as a component that focuses only on the quality of comfort for interior occupants, while ignoring effects on the exterior of the building, or as an identifiable aesthetic for the building’s owners. This essay proposes the rethinking of the building facade as a steward of outdoor pedestrian welfare, and the conception of public health as an added function of the building envelope−a concept that may fall into the jurisdiction of public works. If the huge total surface area of a city’s buildings is thought of as part of the city’s infrastructure, then its public contribution may not only make outdoor areas comfortable, clean, and enjoyable, but also help to alleviate the bigger problem of rising temperatures in cities.

Key technological research and application of low energy consumption building design in Tibe

Liu Jiaping,Yang Liu,Liu Yanfeng,Tian Guomin

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 10,   Pages 40-46

Abstract:

According to the poor environment situation of residential building in Tibetan plateau both urban and rural and the shortage of conventional energy sources, this paper presents the basic theories, methods and key technical problems for low energy consumption buildings design appropriate to the local climate natural condition and the social economic background, by the means of large-scale field investigation, detailed testing and calculation on the physical environment and energy consumption and the comprehensive analysis about the basic model of residential buildings. The basic meteorological data for low energy building design are developed. The energy saving building system for city and rural and the new rural ecological residential building model, based on the local culture and social economic development condition, are proposed and designed focusing on the utilization of solar energy. Moreover, exemplary projects are built, which not only meet basic thermal comfort level, but also guarantee the super low energy consumption for heating and cooling. Design standard and atlas reference to low energy building design for Tibetan plateau are compiled, promoting the overall progress of building energy conservation. The results of this study provide an effective reference for the entire Qinghai-Tibet plateau and for other areas of the country.

On the Applied Sciences and Engineering Sciences

Shen Zhujiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 18-21

Abstract:

Based on the recognition of difference between science, technology and engineering, this paper discusses the relationship between applied sciences and engineering sciences. The applied .sciences deal with knowledge having value of practical usage which laid the foundations to develop useful technologies. The engineering sciences contain comprehensive knowledge both about technology and management. The paper also gives a suggestion of establishing a comprehensive engineering science named as the natural engineering science and discusses the relationship between the systematic science and engineering science.

Research and Implementations of Structural Monitoring for Bridges and Buildings in Japan—A Review Review

Yozo Fujino, Dionysius M. Siringoringo, Yoshiki Ikeda, Tomonori Nagayama, Tsukasa Mizutani

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 6,   Pages 1093-1119 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.09.006

Abstract:

This paper provides a review on the development of structural monitoring in Japan, with an emphasis on the type, strategy, and utilization of monitoring systems. The review focuses on bridge and building structures using vibration-based techniques. Structural monitoring systems in Japan historically started with the objective of evaluating structural responses against extreme events. In the development of structural monitoring, monitoring systems and collected data were used to verify design assumptions, update specifications, and facilitate the efficacy of vibration control systems. Strategies and case studies on monitoring for the design verification of long-span bridges and tall buildings, the performance of seismic isolation systems in building and bridges, the verification of structural retrofit, the verification of structural control systems (passive, semiactive, and active), structural assessment, and damage detection are described. More recently, the application
of monitoring systems has been extended to facilitate efficient operation and effective maintenance through the rationalization of risk and asset management using monitoring data. This paper also summarizes the lessons learned and feedback obtained from case studies on the structural monitoring of bridges and buildings in Japan.
