Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 82-92 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.05.017

Abstract: Although the trends in aerosol optical depth (AOD) at global and regional scales have been widely examined, little attention has been paid to the trends in type-dependent AODs related to aerosol particle propertiesHere, using the aerosol optical component dataset from the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument, we investigate decadal-scale trends in total aerosol loading as well as AODs for five aerosolcomponents by particle size and morphology during 2003–2018 over land.

Structure creation in earthen construction materials: information from dry soil mixtures

Christopher BECKETT, Charles AUGARDE

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 151-159 doi: 10.1007/s11709-011-0109-7

Abstract: There is increasing interest in the use of earthen construction materials, such as rammed earth, due to their inherent sustainability. These materials have been used by man for thousands of years and some of the earliest examples can be found in China. Features of the structures of these materials arise from the means of production. In particular, in situ earthen construction materials exhibit strong anisotropy due to their layered nature. A more subtle structure effect arises from the way that the earth mixture is deposited. This paper reviews and discusses stratification effects in dry soil mixtures, including some original experimental work, and indicates some links between the features of the dry mixtures and earthen construction materials. Improved understanding of the physical processes in play will allow more accurate specification of these materials in the future, and hence spread their use.
