Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 12,   Pages 1565-1580 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0867-4

Abstract: This study proposes a shape optimization method for K6 aluminum alloy spherical reticulated shells with gusset joints, considering geometric, material, and joint stiffness nonlinearities. The optimization procedure adopts a genetic algorithm in which the elastoplastic non-linear buckling load is selected as the objective function to be maximized. By confinement of the adjustment range of the controlling points, optimization results have enabled a path toward achieving a larger elastoplastic non-linear buckling load without changing the macroscopic shape of the structure. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, the variation in structural performance during optimization is illustrated. Through parametric analysis, practical design tables containing the parameters of the optimized shape are obtained for aluminum alloy spherical shells with common geometric parameters. To explore the effect of material nonlinearity, the optimal shapes obtained based on considering and not considering material non-linear objective functions, the elastoplastic and elastic non-linear buckling loads, are compared.

On the direct use of recovered scrap Cu and saving Cu with Al in the Chinese cable industry

Huang Chongqi

Strategic Study of CAE 2008, Volume 10, Issue 5,   Pages 10-18

Abstract:

The Cu consumption by the chinese cable industry amounted to 3.54 million tons in 2006, taking over 70 % of the total Cu consumption in China in that year. At present, making Cu rod directly from recovered scrap Cu and saving Cu with Al have become topics of general interests in the chinese cable industry. The quality of the Cu conductors in the industry is declining, resulting in sharp decrease in the rate of qualified wire and cable products. More and more Cu wires are drawn from the rods made directly from scrap Cu. The manufacturers know well some of the wires or rods are unqualified products though, they continue to use or produce products, not complying with standards in order to make profits. Now the consumption of Cu-clad-aluminum and Cu-clad-steel is growing gradually. In 2006, the consumption of Cu-clad-aluminum in China amounted to ca. 50 000 tons. But in some applications, neither the common understanding between buyer and supplier nor the results of feasibility study are achieved in the product orientation and technical/economic feasibility in terms of saving Cu with Al. This paper presents the status-quo, problems arisen and suggestions in terms of making Cu rod directly from recovered scrap Cu and saving Cu with Al, in a view to promote these two topics of general interests to go toward a virtuous circle.

Additives effects on crystallization and morphology in a novel caustic aluminate solution decomposition process

Ying ZHANG, Shili ZHENG, Yifei ZHANG, Hongbin XU, Yi ZHANG

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 88-92 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0133-5

Abstract: A novel process of caustic aluminate solution decomposition by alcohol medium was developed by the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences in order to solve the problem of low decomposition ratio in the traditional Bayer seeded hydrolysis process. In this research, effects of additives on the crystallization ratio, secondary particle size and morphology of aluminum hydroxide in the new process were studied to obtain high-quality products. On the basis of primary selection of additives, an orthogonal design L9(3 ) was used as a chemometric method to investigate the effects of additives. The studied parameters include the reaction style, quantity of additives, caustic soda concentration, as well as the combination manner. The crystallization ratios of sodium aluminate solution and crystal size of aluminum hydroxide, determined by ICP-OES, SEM and MLPSA (Malvern Laser Particle Size Analyzer), were used to evaluate the effects of the additives. The results showed that different combination manners could promote agglomeration or dispersion. An additive composed by Tween 80 and PEG 200 could promote agglomeration, while a spot of PEG species had a relatively strong dispersion effect. However, the additives had little effects on the crystallization ratios. According to the Raman spectra result, the added alcohol medium might serve as a kind of solvent.
