Envisioning the Intersectionality and Synergy of Precision Nutrition and Engineering

Yun Song,Hao Zhang,Huiyuan Guo,Xiaobin Wang,

Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2024.04.021

Abstract: The traditional approach with nutritional supplements is “one size fits all,” which has its limitations due to a lack of consideration of individual variations, including genetic background, health condition, lifestyle, and dietary intake. Depending on individual characteristics, the exact same nutritional supplementation could be beneficial, have no effect, or even be harmful. Precision nutrition has emerged as a new horizon, with the aim of carefully assessing individual nutritional and health needs and designing individually tailored diet and nutritional supplements. Engineering may play a significant role in each step of precision nutrition research and translation, including big data collection and management, nutritional and environmental assessment, data analyses, prediction, biomedical engineering, and nutritional engineering. The integration of precision nutrition and engineering could enhance our ability to best serve all people’s nutritional and health needs.

Deployment of autonomous driving on bus rapid transit lanes: Synergy between autonomous vehicle speed

Frontiers of Engineering Management doi: 10.1007/s42524-024-3107-x

Abstract: This study investigates the use of autonomous vehicles in bus rapid transit lanes during the initial phases of autonomous driving development. The aim is to accelerate the advancement of autonomous driving technologies and enhance the efficiency of bus lane usage. We first develop a dynamic joint optimization model that adjusts autonomous vehicle speeds and bus timetables to minimize vehicle travel times while reducing bus passenger waiting times. We account for random variables such as stochastic passenger arrivals at bus stations and variable demand for autonomous vehicle travel by constructing a stochastic dynamic model. To address the computational challenges of large-scale scenarios, we implement a simulation-based heuristic algorithm framework. This framework is designed to efficiently produce high-quality solutions within feasible time limits. Our numerical studies on an actual bus line show that our approach significantly improves system throughput compared to existing benchmarks. Moreover, by strategically managing the entry of autonomous vehicles into the lane and modifying bus timetables, we further enhance the operational efficiency of the system.

Enhanced synergy between Cu

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 3,   Pages 666-678 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-1982-1

Abstract: As the substitution of common noble catalysts in the hydrogenation of carboxylic acid, a highly effective Cu-Ni/SiO catalyst was prepared by a novel stepwise ammonia evaporation method. Its performance in the gas-phase hydrogenation of acetic acid was further examined. With the introduction of Ni dopant, more stable Cu sites, which can adsorb more acetic acid, were formed due to the electron transfer from Cu to Ni. This makes more Cu sites available for hydrogen adsorption, which was suggested as the rate-determining step in acetic acid hydrogenation. A conversion of 99.6% was successfully achieved on this new Cu/SiO -0.5Ni catalyst, accompanied by the ethanol selectivity of 90%. The incorporation of nickel between copper nanoparticles enhances the synergistic effect between Cu and Cu . It also helps mitigate the aggregation of copper nanoparticles due to the Ostwald ripening effect induced by acetic acid and enhance the stability of copper catalyst in the conversion of carboxylic acid.

Homoharringtonine synergy with oridonin in treatment of t(8; 21) acute myeloid leukemia

Weina Zhang, Ying Lu, Tao Zhen, Xinjie Chen, Ming Zhang, Ping Liu, Xiangqin Weng, Bing Chen, Yueying Wang

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 3,   Pages 388-397 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0624-1

Abstract: Collaboration of c-KIT mutations with AML1–ETO (AE) has been demonstrated to induce t(8; 21) acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Targeted therapies designed to eliminate AE and c-KIT oncoproteins may facilitate effective treatment of t(8; 21) AML. Homoharringtonine (HHT) features activity against tumor cells harboring c-KIT mutations, whereas oridonin can induce t(8; 21) AML cell apoptosis and AE cleavage. Therefore, studies should explore the efficacy of combination therapy with oridonin and HHT in t(8; 21) AML. In this study, we investigated the synergistic effects and mechanism of oridonin combined with HHT in t(8; 21) AML cell line and mouse model. The two drugs synergistically inhibited cell viability and induced significant mitochondrial membrane potential loss and apoptosis. Oridonin and HHT induced significant downregulation of c-KIT and its downstream signaling pathways and promoted AE cleavage. HHT increased intracellular oridonin concentration by modulating the expressions of MRP1 and MDR1, thus enhancing the effects of oridonin. The combination of oridonin and HHT prolonged t(8; 21) leukemia mouse survival. In conclusion, oridonin and HHT exert synergistic effects against t(8; 21) leukemia and , thereby indicating that their combination may be an effective therapy for t(8; 21) leukemia.

Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 1,   Pages 68-78 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.01.002

Abstract:

Silicon wafers are fundamental materials for semiconductors. China's semiconductor silicon wafers are highly dependent on foreign trade. Enhancing the independent guarantee capability of silicon wafers is significant for improving the overall level of China’s semiconductor industry. This study focuses on the market-dominant 8-inch and 12-inch silicon wafers, analyzes the development status of the global semiconductor silicon wafer technologies and industry, and prospects the development trend of the industry. The study specifically focuses on the development status of China's semiconductor silicon wafer industry, and points out that the industry in China is currently facing critical developing opportunities considering the market demand, macro policies, supporting capacities, R&D investment, and other favorable factors; meanwhile, it still faces challenges. Furthermore, the following measures and suggestions are proposed: (1) further strengthening top-level design and macro planning, (2) strengthening policy implementation and sustainability, (3) supporting the coordinated development of the industrial chain, and (4) developing semiconductor silicon wafers for advanced processing of integrated circuits, hoping to provide a reference for the higher-quality development of China’s semiconductor silicon wafer industry.
