Comparison of indicators for agricultural green development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and mapping the way forward RESEARCH ARTICLE

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2024, Volume 11, Issue 1,   Pages 69-82 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2024548

Abstract:

While agricultural green development (AGD) is highly recognized and has become a national strategy in China, it is imperative to bridge the knowledge gaps between AGD and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to evaluate the contribution of AGD to meeting the SDGs. The first aim of this study was to compare the AGD goals and indicators with those of the SDGs so as to identify their relationship. The next aim was to examine the historical evolution of AGD indicators and analyze the gaps between the current status of various indicators and their benchmarks. Limiting factors were identified in China’s transition toward AGD. These findings reveal that the indicators of AGD align with those of the SDGs, but have greater specificity to the context in China and are more quantifiable. There has been a significant increase per capita calorie and protein intakes in China, as well as a notable rise in agricultural output per unit of arable land and rural incomes from 1980 to the 2010s. However, these achievements have been accompanied by a high resource use and environmental pollution, highlighting the need for a more sustainable, environmentally responsible agriculture in China.

Midline2 is overexpressed and a prognostic indicator in human breast cancer and promotes breast cancer

Lan Wang,Jueheng Wu,Jie Yuan,Xun Zhu,Hongmei Wu,Mengfeng Li

Frontiers of Medicine 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 41-51 doi: 10.1007/s11684-016-0429-z

Abstract:

Midline2 (MID2) is an ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme linked to tumor progression and a novel interacting partner of breast cancer 1, early-onset (BRCA1). However, the role of MID2 in breast cancer remains unknown. This study investigated the expression, prognostic value, and role of MID2 in breast cancer. The expression of MID2 mRNA and protein was significantly upregulated in breast cancer tissue and established cell lines compared with that in normal breast epithelial cells and paired adjacent non-tumor tissue (P<0.001). Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that MID2 was overexpressed in 272 of 284 (95.8%) paraffin-embedded, archived breast cancer tissue. Moreover, MID2 expression increased with advanced clinical stage (P<0.001). High MID2 expression was significantly associated with advanced clinical stages and T, N, and M staging (all P<0.05). Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that high MID2 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor overall survival in the entire cohort (93.73 vs. 172.1 months; P<0.001, log-rank test) and in subgroups with stages Tis+ I+ II and III+ IV. Furthermore, 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide colony formation, and anchorage-independent growth ability assays were conducted. Results showed that siRNA silencing of MID2 expression significantly reduced MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation in vitro and blocked the growth of MDA-MB-231 cell xenograft tumors in vivo (P<0.05). This study indicated that MID2 may be a novel prognostic marker and interventional target in breast cancer.

Development Strategy of Nuclear Energy Mineral Resources

Zhang Jindai , Li Ziying , Su Xuebin , Tan Yahui , Li Shengxiang , Su Yanru , Li Jianhua , Deng Ping , Xu Lechang , Pan Ziqiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2019, Volume 21, Issue 1,   Pages 113-118 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2019.01.016

Abstract:

Nuclear energy mineral resources refer to uranium resources and thorium resources with potential application prospects. At present, it mainly refers to uranium resources. With an unbalanced global distribution, the supply and demand of the uranium resources will inevitably be adjusted through the market. To build a competitive nuclear industry, a strong supply capacity of the nuclear energy mineral resources is required. A great power of nuclear energy mineral resources should possess both resource endowment and resource management capabilities. The main indicators for a great power of nuclear energy mineral resources should include domestic resource support capacity, scientific and technological strength, enterprise strength, international management and planning abilities, and sustainable development potentials. To become a great power of nuclear energy mineral resources, China should implement a number of major scientific and technological innovation projects and major application demonstration projects; build a number of 1000-ton uranium resources development bases; participate in international cooperation by actively “going global”, especially cooperation with the “Belt and Road” countries; and provide policy support for scientific and technological innovation, industrial development, and overseas development.
