Lizzette Pérez LESPIER, Suzanna LONG, Tom SHOBERG, Steven CORNS

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2019, Volume 6, Issue 3,   Pages 368-383 doi: 10.1007/s42524-019-0004-9

Abstract: Maritime shipping is considered the most efficient, low-cost means for transporting large quantities of freight over significant distances. However, this process also causes negative environmental and societal impacts. Therefore, environmental sustainability is a pressing issue for maritime shipping management, given the interest in addressing important issues that affect the safety, security, and air and water quality as part of the efficient movement of freight throughout the coasts and waterways and associated port facilities worldwide. In-depth studies of maritime transportation systems (MTS) can be used to identify key environmental impact indicators within the transportation system. This paper develops a tool for decision making in complex environments; this tool will quantify and rank preferred environmental impact indicators within a MTS. Such a model will help decision-makers to achieve the goals of improved environmental sustainability. The model will also provide environmental policy-makers in the shipping industry with an analytical tool that can evaluate tradeoffs within the system and identify possible alternatives to mitigate detrimental effects on the environment.

Combined Application of Wide-Field Electromagnetic Method and Flow Field Fitting Method for High-Resolution Exploration: A Case Study of the Anjialing No. 1 Coal Mine Article

Jishan He

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 5,   Pages 667-675 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.09.006

Abstract:

The Anjialing No. 1 Coal Mine in Shanxi Province, China, contains a complicated old goaf and an unknown water distribution that hold high potential for serious water hazards. Due to poor detection resolution, previous attempts have failed to determine the scope of the old goaf and the water distribution in the mine by separate use of various exploration methods such as seismic method, direct current resistivity, audio magnetotellurics, controlled-source audio-frequency magnetotellurics, and transient electromagnetics. To solve this difficult problem, a combination of the wide-field electromagnetic method and the flow field fitting method with three-dimensional resistivity data inversion was applied to determine the precise scope of the goaf and the locations where water is present, and to identify the hydraulic connection between the water layers so as to provide reliable technical support for safe coal production. Reasonable results were achieved, with all these goals being met. As a result, a mining area of nearly 4 km2 has been released for operation.

Development of ASCP for Ammonium Phosphate Technology and Five Projects of Phosphate Fertilizer in China

Zhong Benhe

Strategic Study of CAE 2004, Volume 6, Issue 6,   Pages 22-25

Abstract:

The production of ammonium phosphate by “ammoniated slurry concentrating process”(ASCP) developed by Sichuan University etc. has solved the difficulty that China´s low grade phosphorus ore is not suitable for the imported “phosphoric acid concentrating process”(PACP). 87 plants employing ASCP have been built with a total capacity of 2.79×106 t/a, which is 60% of the total ammonium phosphate production in China. Recently, a technique for ammonium phosphate production combining both ASCP and the imported PACP has been developed and put into operation in Wengfu of Guizhou Province. The new process with independent property right has been adopted in the five updating projects of phosphate fertilizer in China.

Fast Marching Method for Microseismic Source Location in Cavern-Containing Rockmass: Performance Analysis and Engineering Application Article

Ruochen Jiang, Feng Dai, Yi Liu, Ang Li

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 7,   Pages 1023-1034 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2020.10.019

Abstract:

Microseismic (MS) event locations are vital aspect of MS monitoring technology used to delineate the damage zone inside the surrounding rock mass. However, complex geological conditions can impose significantly adverse effects on the final location results. To achieve a high-accuracy location in a complex cavern-containing structure, this study develops an MS location method using the fast marching method (FMM) with a second-order difference approach (FMM2). Based on the established velocity model with three-dimensional (3D) discrete grids, the realization of the MS location can be achieved by searching the minimum residual between the theoretical and actual first arrival times. Moreover, based on the calculation results of FMM2, the propagation paths from the MS sources to MS sensors can be obtained using the linear interpolation approach and the Runge–Kutta method. These methods were validated through a series of numerical experiments. In addition, our proposed method was applied to locate the recorded blasting and MS events that occurred during the excavation period of the underground caverns at the Houziyan hydropower station. The location results of the blasting activities show that our method can effectively reduce the location error compared with the results based on the uniform velocity model. Furthermore, the obtained MS location was verified through the occurrence of shotcrete fractures and spalling, and the monitoring results of the in-situ multipoint extensometer. Our proposed method can offer a more accurate rock fracture location and facilitate the delineation of damage zones inside the surrounding rock mass.

Zheng Yingren,Zhao Shangyi,Deng Chujian,Liu Weiming,Tang Xiaosong,Zhang Liming

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 12,   Pages 39-61

Abstract:

Finite element limit analysis method has the advantage of combining numerical analysis method with traditional limit equilibrium methods. It is particularly applicable to the analysis and design of geotechnical engineering. In the early 20th century, finite element limit analysis method has been developed vigorously in domestic geotechnical engineering using international common finite element procedures. It made great achievements in basic theory research, computational precision improvement, and broadening the application fields in the practical projects. In order to gradually achieon innovation in geotechnical design methods, this paper presented some research results of the authors and their collaborators. These mainly include geotechnical safety factor definitions, method principles, the overall failure criterion, deduction and selection of yield criterion, and the measure to improve the computational precision, etc. The application fields have been broadened from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, from soil slope to jointed rock slope and foundation, from stable seepage to nonstable seepage, from slope and foundation to tunnel. This method has also been used for searching sliding surface of complex landslide, retaining structure design considering the interaction between soil and structure, simulating foundation bearing plates load tests, and so on.
