Reactive power deployment and cost benefit analysis in DNO operated distribution electricity markets

Atma Ram GUPTA,Ashwani KUMAR

Frontiers in Energy 2019, Volume 13, Issue 1,   Pages 86-98 doi: 10.1007/s11708-017-0456-8

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze unbalanced radial distribution systems (UBRDS) with the distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM). The main objectives of this paper are D-STATCOM allocation in UBRDS with an objective of providing reactive power support to enhance voltage profile and reduce line losses of the distribution network, determination of optimal D-STATCOM rating subjected to minimization of total cost, and impact of D-STATCOM placement on improving power factor and savings in cost of energy loss. The analysis is conducted on a large industrial load model with light, medium and high loading scenarios. Further, the impact of load growth is also considered for better planning of the power distribution system. The results are obtained on standard 25-bus UBRDS to check the feasibility of the proposed methodology.

Reducing CO emissions from the rebalancing operation of the bike-sharing system in Beijing

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2023, Volume 10, Issue 2,   Pages 262-284 doi: 10.1007/s42524-021-0168-y

Abstract: With the development of the bike-sharing system (BSS) and the introduction of green and low carbon development, the environmental impacts of BSS had received increasing attention in recent years. However, the emissions from the rebalancing of BSS, where fossil-fueled vehicles are commonly used, are usually neglected, which goes against the idea of green travel in a sharing economy. Previous studies on the bike-sharing rebalancing problem (BRP), which is considered NP-hard, have mainly focused on algorithm innovation instead of improving the solution model, thereby hindering the application of many existing models in large-scale BRP. This study then proposes a method for optimizing the CO2 emissions from BRP and takes the BSS of Beijing as a demonstration. We initially analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of BSS, especially the flow between districts, and find that each district can be independently rebalanced. Afterward, we develop a rebalancing optimization model based on a partitioning strategy to avoid deciding the number of bikes being loaded or unloaded at each parking node. We then employ the tabu search algorithm to solve the model. Results show that (i) due to over launch and lack of planning in rebalancing, the BSS in Beijing shows great potential for optimization, such as by reducing the number of vehicle routes, CO2 emissions, and unmet demands; (ii) the CO2 emissions of BSS in Beijing can be reduced by 57.5% by forming balanced parking nodes at the end of the day and decreasing the repetition of vehicle routes and the loads of vehicles; and (iii) the launch amounts of bikes in specific districts, such as Shijingshan and Mentougou, should be increased.

Devising optimal integration test orders using cost–benefit analysis Research Article

Fanyi MENG, Ying WANG, Hai YU, Zhiliang ZHU,yuhai@mail.neu.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 5,   Pages 692-714 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100466

Abstract: Integration testing is an integral part of software testing. Prior studies have focused on reducing test cost in generation. However, there are no studies concerning the testing priorities of critical classes when generating s. Such priorities greatly affect testing efficiency. In this study, we propose an effective strategy that considers both test cost and efficiency when generating test orders. According to a series of dynamic execution scenarios, the software is mapped into a multi-layer dynamic execution network (MDEN) model. By analyzing the dynamic structural complexity, an evaluation scheme is proposed to quantify the class testing priority with the defined class risk index. ; is used to perform cycle-breaking operations, satisfying two principles: assigning higher priorities to higher-risk classes and minimizing the total complexity of test stubs. We also present a strategy to evaluate the effectiveness of algorithms by calculating the reduction of software risk during their testing process. Experiment results show that our approach performs better across software of different scales, in comparison with the existing algorithms that aim only to minimize test cost. Finally, we implement a tool, ITOsolution, to help practitioners automatically generate test orders.

Hydro Power Development at the Yalu Tsangpo River

Xu damao,Chen chuanyou,Liang weiyang

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 12,   Pages 47-52

Abstract:

As the largest river in Tibet, the Yalu Tsangpo River (hereinafter referred to as the river) is abundant in hydropower resources in the range of 113 GW. The river has a “U”-shaped elbow in the Great Gorge area to form an ideal site for a gigantic hydropower station of 40 GW——the largest in the world to date. With the foregoing background, this paper outlines a preliminary project program in this regard. In the opinion of the present author, the mountain should be tunneled at an appropriate point to form a massive hydraulic head of 2280 m. The entire project will be divided into three phases with 12~15 GW implemented at each stage. The electrical output of the first phase can be supplied to Southeast Asia and that of the subsequent phases to southeastern China (especially Guangdong Province). The cost estimated for the project is less than that of the Three Gorges project due primarily to the fact that there is no need to consider such factors as flood control, shipping rerouting and population resettlement, all of which translate into immediate economic benefits. Meanwhile, the project will set four straight world records, namely, the largest hydropower station, the largest generating unit, the highest waterfall and the largest gorge. As a result, the project is of immense significance to the sustainable development of Tibet and to China as a whole, and is also bound to exert tremendous international influence. Due to the complexities and size associated with the project, a huge number of difficulties and problems must be fully addressed beforehand. It is hoped that all the involved difficulties will be discussed and analyzed in-depth with a view to reaching scientific and practical conclusions for the project.

Development of an integrated policy making tool for assessing air quality and human health benefits of air pollution control

Xuezhen QIU,Yun ZHU,Carey JANG,Che-Jen LIN,Shuxiao WANG,Joshua FU,Junping XIE,Jiandong WANG,Dian DING,Shicheng LONG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 6,   Pages 1056-1065 doi: 10.1007/s11783-015-0796-8

Abstract: Efficient air quality management is critical to protect public health from the adverse impacts of air pollution. To evaluate the effectiveness of air pollution control strategies, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has developed the Software for Model Attainment Test-Community Edition (SMAT-CE) to assess the air quality attainment of emission reductions, and the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program-Community Edition (BenMAP-CE) to evaluate the health and economic benefits of air quality improvement respectively. Since scientific decision-making requires timely and coherent information, developing the linkage between SMAT-CE and BenMAP-CE into an integrated assessment platform is desirable. To address this need, a new module linking SMAT-CE to BenMAP-CE has been developed and tested. The new module streamlines the assessment of air quality and human health benefits for a proposed air pollution control strategy. It also implements an optimized data gridding algorithm which significantly enhances the computational efficiency without compromising accuracy. The performance of the integrated software package is demonstrated through a case study that evaluates the air quality and associated economic benefits of a national-level control strategy of PM . The results of the case study show that the proposed emission reduction reduces the number of nonattainment sites from 379 to 25 based on the US National Ambient Air Quality Standards, leading to more than US$334 billion of economic benefits annually from improved public health. The integration of the science-based software tools in this study enhances the efficiency of developing effective and optimized emission control strategies for policy makers.

Abstract:

While a growing number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are being retrofitted from the conventional activated sludge (CAS) process to the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process, the debate on the techno-economy of MBR vs. CAS has continued and calls for a thorough assessment based on techno-economic valuation.
