软物质是指一类可以在微小作用力或热能作用下发生形变的材料。软物质兼具固体和液体的特点。软物质的一个主要特征是其弹性系数比大部分固体低多个数量级。通常，材料的弹性常数单元可以由压力或能量密度来描述。这些单元的能量范围可以跨越几个数量级，从热能到几个电子伏特。其中共价键的能量就是典型的几个电子伏特。软物质的弹性系数甚至可以比大部分固体低十个数量级，这也反映了软物质具有不同的尺度范围或能量密度。因此，软物质的基本物理规律总是体现在更大的空间尺度上，这一特征赋予了该领域极大的魅力。

软物质通常包括胶体、高分子、乳液、凝胶、液晶、颗粒材料、生物材料等诸多体系。这些材料均表现出介观尺度范围的物理特性。拓扑复杂性、局部有序性和长弛豫时间是软物质体系区别于传统液体和固体的典型特征。并且，人类本身就是软物质，软物质的研究与人类的生活息息相关。

近年来，人们对环境的保护意识逐渐增强，对环境友好材料的需求急剧上升，雾霾、水污染等环境相关问题亟待解决。软物质在解决上述问题的过程中发挥了重要作用。软物质的核心思想（即自组装形成黏弹性可调的有序结构）与绿色化学工程的核心价值观（即化工过程优化和可持续发展）高度契合。两者结合引领了许多创新有趣的软物质研究，对绿色化学工程的发展产生了积极的推动作用。

在中国工程院的支持下，我们非常荣幸组织本期面向绿色化学工程的软物质专题，并邀请来自世界各地的著名专家学者报道该领域的最新进展。

本期专题共十篇论文，其中包括四篇综述、三篇研究性论文、两篇快讯和一篇观点述评。这些论文的内容涵盖了软物质研究的一系列主题，既有基础理论又有实验验证。其中，褚良银等发展了一种包裹纳米凝胶颗粒的胶囊，能快速识别分子，为高效去除水中的有机污染物颗粒提供了一种新策略。Park等和Shum等通过实时实验观测结合理论模型分别系统研究了纳米气泡体系和微流控体系的微化工过程。锁志刚等和Portale等分别研究了生物可降解材料和电子器件材料的介观结构与宏观性能之间的构效关系。Russell等总结了液/液界面上基于主客体分子识别的超分子系统，重点论述了该类软物质材料的功能和应用。曾洪波等概述了基于微流控技术的蛋白纤维的设计和制造的最新进展。最后，Jákli等和 Yoon等分别综述了有机电子技术的发展，并展望了其在绿色可持续发展领域的潜在应用。
