Frontiers of Engineering Management 2014, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 260-269 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2014035

Abstract: At present, China’s economy is in rapid growth. The scale of engineering construction is significantly increasing and a number of major projects have been completed and put into use, bringing the engineering management practice new issues and challenges with each passing day. In the meantime, Chinese scholars are constantly summarizing what they have learnt in these activities and making great effort to gradually establish their own theoretical system of engineering management, of which the core essence of theoretical system of engineering management becomes a critically important topic. By studying our engineering management theory and practice, this paper preliminarily sums up the core essence of the engineering management theory in China as: “establishing a perfect harmony between human and nature through a people-oriented approach and dual innovation”, with a hope to help and enrich the research on the theoretical system of engineering management in China.

Stormwater runoff pollution loads from an urban catchment with rainy climate in China

Liqing LI, Baoqing SHAN, Chenqing YIN

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2012, Volume 6, Issue 5,   Pages 672-677 doi: 10.1007/s11783-012-0447-2

Abstract: An older urban district in Wuhan, China, is transitioning from discharging sewage and stormwater directly into lakes, to directing the sewage to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Dealing with polluted stormwater discharge is a great challenge. Stormwater runoff from an urban catchment with a combined sewer system was sampled and analyzed over a three-year period. Results indicate that wet weather flows account for 66%, 31%, 17%, and 13% of the total load of suspended solids (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. The first flush of COD and SS was significant in all runoff events. More than 50% of the SS and COD loads were transported by the first 30% of runoff volume. Storage and treatment of the first 10 mm from each combined sewer overflow event could reduce more than 70% of the annual COD overflow load. An integrated solution is recommended, consisting of a tank connected to the WWTP and a detention pond, to store and treat the combined sewer overflow (CSO). These results may be helpful in mitigating CSO pollution for many other urban areas in China and other developing countries.

Zhongde SHAN, Fuzhen SUN, Yang LIU

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2019, Volume 14, Issue 4,   Pages 393-401 doi: 10.1007/s11465-019-0550-1

Abstract: In accordance with the requirement of manufacturing dies quickly and economically, a hybrid forming method of stamping dies for automobile panels is proposed. The method combines digital patternless casting and high-power laser cladding. An experimental study is conducted on the hybrid forming process and its trial production and application in the manufacturing of stamping dies for typical panels. Results prove that the laser cladding layer exceeds HRC60 (Rockwell hardness) and thus meets the production efficiency requirement of automobile dies. The rate of defects is well controlled. Compared with traditional technology, this technology has remarkable advantages and advancement.

Relationship between expression of hepatocyte grow factor and apoptosis of trophoblasts in hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy

OUYANG Shan, ZHANG Qinghua, QIAO Fuyuan

Frontiers of Medicine 2007, Volume 1, Issue 4,   Pages 386-389 doi: 10.1007/s11684-007-0075-6

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and Fas in placentas of uncomplicated pregnant women and those with hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (HDCP), and elucidate the possible relationship between HGF and apoptosis of trophoblasts. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was undertaken to examine the concentration of HGF mRNA and Fas mRNA obtained from 34 cases of HDCP and 30 cases of uncomplicated pregnancy. The expression of HGF mRNA in mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia and eclampsia cases was significantly lower than that in the uncomplicated cases (0.43±0.12, 0.38±0.09, 0.19±0.17 versus 0.67±0.19, <0.05), while the expression of Fas mRNA in mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia and eclampisa cases was significantly higher than that in the uncomplicated cases (1.58±0.26, 2.96±0.14, 5.98±1.17 versus 1.01±0.36, <0.05). For HGF mRNA and Fas mRNA, there was no difference between gestational hypertension cases and control cases. Decreased HGF mRNA or increased Fas mRNA was found along with the progress of HDCP. Negative correlation was found between the expressions of HGF and Fas. These results indicate that HGF inhibits the apoptosis mediated by Fas, and the reduced expression of HGF in HDCP may be responsible for the apoptosis of trophoblasts.

Molecular size characterization of heavy oil fractions in vacuum and solution by molecular dynamic simulation

Wenpo REN, Honggang CHEN, Chaohe YANG, Honghong SHAN,

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 3,   Pages 250-256 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0281-7

Abstract: Two kinds of heavy oils were fractionated into eight fractions by Liquid-Solid Adsorption Chromatography, respectively, and samples were collected to measure properties. According to the elemental analysis, molecular weight and H-NMR data, average molecular structures of polycyclic aromatic and heavy resin were constructed with improved Brown-Ladner (B-L) method and several corrections. And then, the most stable conformations of polycyclic aromatic and heavy resin in vacuum and toluene solution were obtained by molecular dynamic simulation, and the molecular size was gotten via the radius of gyration analysis. The results showed that the radius of gyration of polycyclic aromatic and heavy resin was 0.55–0.70 nm in vacuum and 0.60–0.90 nm in toluene solution. With molecular weight increasing, the molecular size in vacuum and toluene solution also increased. Due to the swelling behavior of solvent, the alkyl side chains of heavy oil molecule in solution were more stretched. Thus, the molecular size in toluene solution was larger than that in vacuum.

Frontiers of Medicine 2021, Volume 15, Issue 4,   Pages 551-561 doi: 10.1007/s11684-020-0760-2

Abstract: Glioma is the most common lethal tumor of the human brain. The median survival of patients with primary World Health Organization grade IV glioma is only 14.6 months. The World Health Organization classification of tumors of the central nervous system categorized gliomas into lower-grade gliomas and glioblastomas. Unlike primary glioblastoma that usually develop in the elderly, secondary glioblastoma enriched with an isocitrate dehydrogenase mutant typically progresses from lower-grade glioma within 5–10 years from the time of diagnosis. Based on various evolutional trajectories brought on by clonal and subclonal alterations, the evolution patterns of glioma vary according to different theories. Some important features distinguish the normal brain from other tissues, e.g., the composition of the microenvironment around the tumor cells, the presence of the blood-brain barrier, and others. The underlying mechanism of glioma recurrence and evolution patterns of glioma are different from those of other types of cancer. Several studies correlated tumor recurrence with tumor heterogeneity and the immune microenvironment. However, the detailed reasons for the progression and recurrence of glioma remain controversial. In this review, we introduce the different mechanisms involved in glioma progression, including tumor heterogeneity, the tumor microenvironment and drug resistance, and their pre-clinical implements in clinical trials. This review aimed to provide new insights into further clinical strategies for the treatment of patients with recurrent and secondary glioma.

High purity Mn

Xiaoqiang SHAN, Fenghua GUO, Wenqian XU, Xiaowei TENG

Frontiers in Energy 2017, Volume 11, Issue 3,   Pages 383-400 doi: 10.1007/s11708-017-0485-3

Abstract: Developing electrodes with high specific energy by using inexpensive manganese oxides is of great importance for aqueous electrochemical energy storage (EES) using non-Li charge carriers such as Na-or K-ions. However, the energy density of aqueous EES devices is generally limited by their narrow thermodynamic potential window (~1.23 V). In this paper, the synthesis of high purity layered Mn O nanoparticles through solid state thermal treatment of Mn O spinel nanoparticles, resulting in a chemical formula of [Mn ][Mn O ], evidenced by Rietveld refinement of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, has been reported. The electro-kinetic analyses obtained from cyclic voltammetry measurements in half-cells have demonstrated that Mn O electrode has a large overpotential (~ 0.6 V) towards gas evolution reactions, resulting in a stable potential window of 2.5 V in an aqueous electrolyte in half-cell measurements. Symmetric full-cells fabricated using Mn O electrodes can be operated within a stable 3.0 V potential window for 5000 galvanostatic cycles, exhibiting a stable electrode capacity of about 103 mAh/g at a C-rate of 95 with nearly 100% coulombic efficiency and 96% energy efficiency.
