Intensifying human activity in the Yangtze River basin has substantially increased nutrient concentrations in the Yangtze River Estuary, leading to degradation of the coastal environment. Analysis of nutrient determinations published over the past 50 years reveals a gradual decreasing trend in the concentrations and fluxes of dissolved silicate (DSi). However, both dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) concentrations have increased significantly since the 1970s. The frequency of and area covered by red tide outbreaks have increased greatly during this period, mainly due to changes in nutrient supply ratios [i.e., N/P (DIN/DIP), N/Si (DIN/DSi), P/Si (DIP/DSi)]. A strong correlation was found between the riverine DIN fluxes and the estimated DIN inputs from the major N sources, particularly fertilizers and atmospheric deposition. The data provide a comprehensive assessment of nutrients in the Yangtze River basin and their ecological impacts and indicate a potentially significant influence of atmospheric deposition on DIN loadings and fluxes.

Forseeing Trends of Development of Analytical Instruments

Strategic Study of Chinese Academy of Engineering 2001, Volume 3, Issue 1, Pages 85-88
Analytical instruments form an important part of scientific instruments section. Analytical instrument industry belongs to the information industry with high technology. The development of analytical instrument industry is one of the main promotion forces and basis for the development of modern science and technology, economy and society. The innovation in scientific instrumentation is by all means an innovation of science and technology. It should be considered as a strategy of the whole nation to speed up the development of scientific instruments. The main application area of analytical instruments has been moving towards the biomedical fields and analytical instrumentation itself is going towards miniaturization and with more intelligence. However, the precise instrumentation of high quality needed when the human challenges the two extremes of either time or space is definitely not negligible. Life, production, scientific research and social activities all need large quantities of such analytical instruments as on-line, noninvasive, nondestructive, in-situ, in-real-time and multidimensional instruments. The trend of widening the gop between the instrument industry at home and abroad must be taken into serious consideration. One of the main factors which influences the changing of such a situation most would be the change of the old idea on scientific instruments of all ranks including leaders, enterprisers as well as scientists and engineers.

The Birth, Development and Prediction of Future Trends of Highrise and Super-highrise Building

Strategic Study of Chinese Academy of Engineering 1999, Volume 1, Issue 2, Pages 6-18
To realize anything which is manmade in the world is an integration of need and possibility. The birth of highrise and super-highrise building can not disobey the rule. Since remote past, human had the will and need of high things, mounting high and living on high places. But the will and need becoming the reality of high-rise building was only in a special age: (1) From the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century, after the industrial revolution, productive forces promoted to a large scale, metropolis enlarged, less land had to hold more people; (2) Steel industry expanded, iron and steel played important roles of building materials; (3) The invention of elevator. These factors emerged simultaneously in the United States. After the birth of highrise building, it went straight ahead to the height of super-highrise, right now, 460 m is a new target to be broken through. The history of the development of highrise and super-highrise building may be devided into four stages: Initial groping, Exploring in depth, Modernism and Maturing Stage. A decade ago, accompanied with the development of economics, there was a booming of highrise and super-highrise building in Asia and West coast of Pacific Ocean. After all, highrise and super-highrise building is a phenomenon of economics. From now on, it should be toward biological. There are broad prospects of engineering works, such as dynamics, mechanics and materials. And there are numerous problems of various aspects to be researched, such as the negative influences of human being* s behaviors in super-highrise buildings. Is there an upper limit of super-highrise building? Where is the limit? ……They are worthy to be explored.

Foodborne disease is one of the most important public health issues worldwide. China faces various and unprecedented challenges in all aspects of the food chain. Data from laboratory-based foodborne disease surveillance systems from 2013 to 2016, as well as different regions and ages, can be found along with differences in the patterns of pathogens detected with diverse characteristics. has been the leading cause of infectious diarrhea in China, especially among adults in coastal regions. has been a serious and widely distributed pathogen responsible for substantial socioeconomic burden. was mostly identified in Northwest China and the inland province (Henan) with less-developed regions among children under 5 years. Data from foodborne disease outbreak reporting system from 2011 to 2016 showed that poisonous animals and plant factors responsible for most deaths were poisonous mushrooms (54.7%) in remote districts in southwest regions. The biological hazard that caused most cases reported (42.3%) was attributed to the leading cause of foodborne outbreaks. In this review, we summarize the recent monitoring approach to foodborne diseases in China and compare the results with those in developed countries.
