Biodegradable, superhydrophobic walnut wood membrane for the separation of oil/water mixtures

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 1377-1386 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2157-z

Abstract: The preparation of environmentally friendly oil/water separation materials remains a great challenge. Freeze-drying of wood after lignin removal yields wood aerogels, which can be used as substrates to prepare fluorine-free environmentally friendly superhydrophobic materials, However, they are more suitable for absorption rather than filtration applications due to their poor strength. A study using cross-sections of pristine wood chips as substrates retains the original strength of wood, but the use of the cross-sectional of wood pieces limits their thickness, strength, and size. In this paper, a degradable fluorine-free superhydrophobic film (max. water contact angle of approximately 164.2°) with self-cleaning and abrasion resistance characteristics was prepared by a one-step method using pristine and activated walnut longitudinal section films as the substrate, with tetraethyl orthosilicate as a precursor and dodecyltriethoxysilane as a modifier. The tensile strength results show that superhydrophobic films with pristine or activated wood substrates maintained the strength of pristine wood and were 2.2 times stronger than the wood aerogel substrate. In addition, after cross-laminating the two samples, the films had the ability to separate oil and water by continuous filtration with high efficiency (98.5%) and flux (approximately 1.3 × 103 L∙m‒2∙h‒1). The method has potential for the large-scale fabrication of degradable superhydrophobic filtration separation membranes.

Chen Guangwei,Li Hongtao,Chen Rongsheng

Strategic Study of CAE 2010, Volume 12, Issue 4,   Pages 90-94

Abstract:

The paper summarized and evaluated asphalt mixture anti-shear test method, anti-shear mechanism and the anti-shear design reasearch recently. The analysis and evaluation of 9 test methods is helpful for related personnel to choose these test methods appropriately. The properties of asphalt grout, anti-shear strength between asphalt and aggregate interface, and interlocking of aggregates, jointly decide HMA (hot mix asphalt) anti-shear strength and are the orientation to improve HMA anti-shear properties. Further researches are needed before anti-shear design is used in engineering to solve the problems such as the determination of relevant coefficient in tolerable shear stress test method and calibration of rutting prediction models based on HMA anti-shear behaviors.

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 1,   Pages 174-183 doi: 10.1007/s11705-017-1670-y

Abstract: Polysulfone (PSf) membranes were modified by either a new organic modifier (sulfonated poly(ether sulfide sulfone), SPESS) or a traditional modifier (rice hulk). These membranes were further reinforced with either multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) or silica nanoparticles. Having a dye rejection of 98.46%, the reinforced membranes increased more than 50% in strength but no change in solution flux was observed. The morphological and roughness studies were conducted using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Moreover, the PSF membranes were also characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. Modifying the membranes with organic modifier or nanofiller increases the glass transition temperature ( ). The highest and strength were observed for the PSf-SPESS-MWCNT membrane. SPESS decreases surface roughness but MWCNT increases roughness on the nanoscale. All membranes show a bimodal pore size distribution, whereas the PSf-SPESS-MWCNT membrane exhibits a relatively uniform distribution of macroscopic and microscopic pores.
