Equal Stress Should Be Laid on Bridge and Tunnel in the Trans-Yangtze Traffic Project

Qian Qihu,He Yishou

Strategic Study of CAE 2001, Volume 3, Issue 5,   Pages 32-34

Abstract:

The trans-Yangtze traffic project plays an important role in the steady development of China´s economy in the 21st Century. In making choice of the transriver project scheme it is not wise to take bridge scheme as the only way out. Instead, equal stress should be laid on bridge and tunnel,so that both bridge and submerged tunnel can give full play to their own strong points in light of local condition.

Study on scheme comparison of bridge and tunnel for Bohai Strait cross-sea channel

Song Kezhi

Strategic Study of CAE 2013, Volume 15, Issue 12,   Pages 52-60

Abstract:

Aspects of bridge and tunnel are analyzed and their characteristics are compared, such as aviation and shipping, traffic capacity and driving comfort, road safety and climate adaptability, construction difficulty and project risk, etc. Technically, schemes of bridge and tunnel are both workable. Tunnel scheme is privilege to bridge scheme on aviation, shipping, climate adaptability, ecological environment and so on. While bridge scheme has advantages over tunnel scheme on traffic capacity, construction difficulty and risk, operating costs, driving safety, driving comfort, landscape and so on. Comparative evaluation index system for Bohai Strait cross-sea channel is structured by analytic hierarchy process. And weight coefficients of every index are calculated. Membership grade of every qualitative index is calculated by experts scoring method and membership grade of every quantitative index is calculated by membership grade function. Finally, model of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is used to calculate comprehensive evaluation value of full bridge scheme, full tunnel scheme and combination scheme of bridge and tunnel. Comprehensive evaluation value of full tunnel scheme is maximum and the full tunnel scheme is the recommended scheme for Bohai Strait cross-sea channel.

A Comparative Assessment of Aerodynamic Models for Buffeting and Flutter of Long-Span Bridges

Igor Kavrakov, Guido Morgenthal

Engineering 2017, Volume 3, Issue 6,   Pages 823-838 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2017.11.008

Abstract:

Wind-induced vibrations commonly represent the leading criterion in the design of long-span bridges. The aerodynamic forces in bridge aerodynamics are mainly based on the quasi-steady and linear unsteady theory. This paper aims to investigate different formulations of self-excited and buffeting forces in the time domain by comparing the dynamic response of a multi-span cable-stayed bridge during the critical erection condition. The bridge is selected to represent a typical reference object with a bluff concrete box girder for large river crossings. The models are viewed from a perspective of model complexity, comparing the influence of the aerodynamic properties implied in the aerodynamic models, such as aerodynamic damping and stiffness, fluid memory in the buffeting and self-excited forces, aerodynamic nonlinearity, and aerodynamic coupling on the bridge response. The selected models are studied for a windspeed range that is typical for the construction stage for two levels of turbulence intensity. Furthermore, a simplified method for the computation of buffeting forces including the aerodynamic admittance is presented, in which rational approximation is avoided. The critical flutter velocities are also compared for the selected models under laminar flow.

Thoughts on the Development of Bridge Technology in China Review

Xuhong Zhou, Xigang Zhang

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 6,   Pages 1120-1130 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.10.001

Abstract:

In the history of bridge engineering, demand has always been the primary driving force for development. Driven by the huge demand for construction since China’s reform and opening-up, Chinese bridge has leapt forward both quantitatively and qualitatively in three major stages, by completing the transition from “follower” to “competitor,” and finally to “leader.” A new future is emerging for Chinese bridge engineering. As an important part of China’s transportation infrastructure, the bridge engineering industry is facing challenges in this new era on how to support the construction of a new form of transportation. This paper provides a summary of the status of bridge technology in China, based on a basic analysis of stock demand, incremental demand, and management demand. It is our belief that the Chinese bridge engineering industry must fulfill three outstanding requirements: construction efficiency, management effectiveness, and long-term service. Intelligent technology based on information technology provides a new opportunity for innovation in bridge engineering. As a result, the development path of bridge engineering needs to be changed. This paper puts forward the idea of developing a third-generation bridge project that is characterized by intelligence, and discusses this project’s implications, development focus, and plan. In this way, this work provides a direction for the improvement of the core competitiveness of China’s bridge engineering industry.

Forms and Aesthetics of Bridges Feature Article

Man-Chung Tang

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 267-276 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2017.12.013

Abstract:

The objective of a bridge design is to produce a safe bridge that is elegant and satisfies all functionality requirements, at a cost that is acceptable to the owner. A successful bridge design must be natural, simple, original, and harmonious with its surroundings. Aesthetics is not an additional consideration in the design of a bridge, but is rather an integral part of bridge design. Both the structural configuration and the aesthetics of a bridge must be considered together during the conceptual design stage. To achieve such a task, the bridge design engineer must have a good understanding of structural theory and bridge aesthetics.

Strategic Study of CAE 2012, Volume 14, Issue 1,   Pages 65-68

Abstract:

DX pile is a new type of variable cross-section pile developed from last decades. This pile has been applied in many foundations of buildings for its great advantage of high bearing capacity and low settlement. Nowadays some foundations of bridges of highway road have adopted DX pile. A case of DX pile in Beijing was analyzed in this paper. Two DX piles and one straight pile were tested by static loading method. The vertical bearing capacity and Q-s curves were obtained. The settlements of different piles were also compared. The axial force along the shaft of DX pile was listed and the effects of bearing capacity of bells were analyzed.

Risk management of Karst tunnel of Yichang-Wanzhou Railway

Zhu Pengfei

Strategic Study of CAE 2009, Volume 11, Issue 12,   Pages 20-25

Abstract:

Yichang-Wanzhou Railway is the most complicated project in southwest of China. The conditions of construction are the toughest, the most dangerous in the history of China railways. As to reduce the chance of gushing water and projecting mud soil, the theory of risk management have been introduced and applied in practice for first time. At the same time, the conception of high risks has been put forward and the systemic measures for risk management have been established. Some of the measures are studied and applied for the first time in railway projects including supervisor of geometry survey, advance geometric forecast, safe management at different grades, water monitoring and alarm system. All of these can provide experiences for other karst tunnel's risk management.

Study on temperature effects of single expansion joint bridge

Zhao Yibin and Shao Xudong

Strategic Study of CAE 2012, Volume 14, Issue 10,   Pages 103-112

Abstract:

There are some problems of easy damage and arduous maintenance in the expansion joints at abutment, and a new type of single expansion joint bridge (SEJB) is herein proposed to deal with them. To investigate the mechanical characteristics of SEJB under temperature load, simplified calculation model is proposed in this paper. Considering the distribution and development rule of cracks in approach pavement, theoretical formulas for internal force and deformation were derived, and calculation programs were compiled. For example, under the effect of temperature drop of 20 ℃, the maximum steel stress was 148 MPa, and the maximum crack width was 0.185 mm for a 280 m length SEJB, which met the requirement of criterion; the additional stress of beam was 0.105 MPa, which could be ignored. Moreover, taking the different temperatures into account, parameter analysis was performed. The results show that the 30 m length pavement can well meet the needs for use. Internal force is reduced by using bearing and cushion materials with low surface friction coefficient, and a biaxial geogrids is recommended.
