Summary of investigations on rotating cavity at IDG, RWTH Aachen University

Dieter BOHN, Jing REN,

Frontiers in Energy 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 489-497 doi: 10.1007/s11708-009-0040-y

Abstract: Annular cavities are found inside rotor shafts of turbomachines with an axial or radial throughflow of cooling air, which influences the thermal efficiency and system reliability of the gas turbines. The flow and heat transfer phenomena in those cavities should be investigated in order to minimize the thermal load and guarantee the system reliability. An experimental rig is set up in the Institute of Steam and Gas Turbines, RWTH Aachen University, to analyze the flow structure inside the rotating cavity with an axial throughflow of cooling air. The corresponding 3D numerical investigation is conducted with the in-house flow solver CHTflow, in which the Coriolis force and the buoyancy force are implemented in the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Both the experimental and numerical results show that the whole flow structure rotating slower than the cavity rotating speed. The flow passing the observation windows in the experimental and numerical results indicates the quite similar trajectories. The computed sequences and periods of the vortex flow structure correspond closely with those observed in the experiment. Furthermore, the numerical analysis reveals a flow pattern changing between single pair, double pair, and triple pair vortices. It is suggested that the vortices inside the cavity are created by the gravitational buoyancy force in the investigated case, while the number and strength of the vortices are controlled mainly by the Coriolis force.

Osteopontin is a promoter for hepatocellular carcinoma metastasis: a summary of 10 years of studies

Lunxiu Qin

Frontiers of Medicine 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 24-32 doi: 10.1007/s11684-014-0312-8

Abstract:

In this review, we summarize the novel findings from our series of studies on the leading metastasis-related gene, osteopontin (OPN). In our previous gene expression profiling study, OPN was identified as one of the leading genes associated with the metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We focused on OPN to evaluate its prognostic values and important roles in HCC metastasis. A retrospective study of large cohorts of HCC patients demonstrated that plasma OPN level was one of the leading independent prognostic factors for HCC patients, even in the early stage of HCC, and could serve as a surrogate serologic biomarker for monitoring the treatment response and tumor recurrence after HCC resection. Using both in vitro and in vivoinvestigations, we found that OPN has an important role in metastasis and tumor growth of HCC and is an attractive potential therapeutic target for combating HCC metastasis. We also found that OPN+ HCC cells have much more amplifications at chromosomal regions, and promoter polymorphisms are important in the regulation of OPN expression and tumor growth and lung metastasis of HCC.

FLOWERING PLANTS AND ENTOMOPHAGOUS ARTHROPODS IN THE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE: A PRACTISE-ORIENTED SUMMARY

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 9, Issue 1,   Pages 63-74 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2021427

Abstract:

There is a growing demand for high-quality agricultural products and more countries have adopted landscape management by sowing flowering plants in agricultural fields as an important branch of conservation biological control. However, there has been less concern over the interactions and trade-offs between floral plants and entomophagous arthropods. This paper review progress in pollen/nectar feeding habits of entomophagous insects including parasitoids and predators which are important natural enemies of crop pests in agricultural fields. Factors that influence the preference of different guilds of natural enemies are reviewed to guide the selection of flowering plants in conservation biological control practices. Most studies find that floral resources have positive effects on both biological traits of natural enemies and their abundance and diversity, and this is believed to contribute greatly to pest control. Furthermore, the potential impacts of floral resources on crop yields are also discussed with an emphasis on a guild of entomophagous insects that provides both pest control and pollination services.

Abstract:

Since the 1960s, facing to a serious threat of environmental pollution, ecological destruction, survival crisis, the Western countries has carried out a long-lasting work, such as the legal system establishment for ecological protection, environmental and economic policy setting up, the low-carbon green circular economy mode founding, ecological protection awareness training and industrial structure upgrading, etc., which have achieved remarkable progress. Since the middle and late 20th century, China has focused on the construction and protection of ecological environment. In the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, ecological civilization construction has been brought into the “Five in One” overall plan of socialist construction with Chinese characteristics. Since then, the ecological civilization has risen from the academic level to the government’s policy agenda and national philosophy. In further promoting of ecological civilization construction, the following points should be important, which are to learn the ideological essence from ancient ecology, to comprehensively promote the institutional mechanism reform, to strengthen enforcement of the ecological and environmental protection law, to actively found the complex capital for ecological civilization construction, to vigorously promote industrial structure adjustment and upgrading, and to attach great importance to the people’s ecological civilization quality education.

Frontiers in Energy 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 135-140 doi: 10.1007/s11708-007-0017-7

Abstract: The conceptual study on the accelerator driven system (ADS) that lasted for about five years ended in 1999 in China. As one project of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) in the energy domain, which is sponsored by the China Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), a five-year-program of fundamental research of ADS physics and related technology was launched in 2000 and passed national review at the end of 2005. The China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics in Peking University (PKU-IHIP) and other institutions jointly carried out the research. The research activities were focused on HPPA physics and technology, reactor physics of external source driven sub-critical assembly, nuclear data base and material study. For HPPA, a high current injector consisting of an ECR ion source, LEBT and an RFQ accelerating structure of 3.5 MeV was built. In reactor physics study, a series of neutron multiplication experimental study has been carried out and still being done. The VENUS facility has been constructed as the basic experimental platform for neutronics study in ADS blanket. It s a zero power sub-critical neutron multiplying assembly driven by external neutron produced by a pulsed neutron generator. The theoretical, experimental and simulation study on nuclear data, material properties and nuclear fuel circulation related to ADS is carrying on to provide the database for ADS system analysis. The main results on ADS related researches will be reported.

The predictive value of chromosome 8p deletion for metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma: a summary

QIN Lunxiu, TANG Zhaoyou, GUAN Xinyuan, YE Qinghai, JIA Huliang, REN Ning

Frontiers of Medicine 2008, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 211-215 doi: 10.1007/s11684-008-0041-y

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents an extremely poor prognostic cancer, which is mainly due to the high frequency of metastasis/recurrence after surgical operation. Exploring the molecular mechanisms involved in HCC metastasis could be helpful in the prediction and early diagnosis of HCC recurrence and could also provide new therapeutic targets for HCC metastasis. In the recent decade, we analyzed the genomic aberrations of the clinical specimens, as well as the metastatic models and cell lines of human HCC to identify the genetic markers related to HCC metastasis and to verify their clinical values in the prediction and control of metastasis of HCC. Using the comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) technique, we compared the differences of chromosomal aberrations between primary HCC tumors and their matched metastatic lesions, and found that chromosome 8p deletions might contribute to HCC metastasis. This novel finding was further confirmed by comparison between nude mice models of HCC with different metastatic potentials. By the more sensitive genome-wide microsatellite analysis, 8p deletion was defined to 8p23.3 and 8p11.2, which are two likely regions harboring metastasis-related genes of HCC. Using ‘8p-specific’ microarrays, two novel metastatic suppressors ( and ) were identified, and were proven to suppress invasion and metastasis of HCC. Clinical studies indicate that 8p deletion detected in HCC or circulating plasma DNA of patients is a useful predictor for metastatic recurrence and prognosis, even for patients with early stage HCC. These novel findings are regarded as important advances in the study of the molecular mechanisms of HCC metastasis, which provide not only a holistic view on the molecular cytogenetic bases of HCC metastasis, but also candidate regions for further study to identify metastatic suppressor genes.

Abstract:

The ship lift of Three Gorges Project is huge and technically complex, and as there is no similar ship lift in the world as a precedent putting into operation, it has been well concerned by domestic and international engineering and technical community. The design and research process of Three Gorges Project ship lift , has been strongly supported by many domestic scientific research and design units, their works provide a theoretical basis for the gradual improvement of the ship lift design. After scheme comparison, the Three Gorges Project ship lift eventually identified as rack and pinion climbing type, its equipment is of complex structure and its manufacture, installation and civil structure need high construction precision requirements, and the Sino-German joint design approach is adopted for the first time. The final review and acceptance for the design results of every stages are executed by Quality Experts Group of Three Gorges Project organized by the Three Gorges Project Corporation. For the technical difficulties and key technical issues of the ship lift, a series of special experimental researchs, such as "research on manufacturing technology of rack, nut column" are organized to examine the rationality and implement ability of the key project design of ship lift .To reduce the effect of tower column deformation on the installation accuracy of rack and nut column, some research and adjustment are done to the construction procedures of ship lift to ensure safe and reliable operation of ship lift. Engineering construction proofs that the management, technical measures undertaken in this paper are scientific and they ensure the smooth implementation of the construction of the Three Gorges Project ship lift.
