Several New Semiconductor Lasers and Status, Challenges and Insights of Related Industries

As the basis of the whole laser industry, the semiconductor laser industry is not only large-scaled but also has strong radiation and driving capacities. The semiconductor lasers are widely used in industrial, military, and living consumption fields such as optical communication, optical information processing, novel manufacturing, laser display, and biological and medical sensing. To adapt to the gradually expanding application range and satisfy the new requirements of different application scenarios, various new mechanisms, concepts, and structures have been introduced into the semiconductor laser industry through interdisciplinary penetration, greatly optimizing the wavelength coverage, beam quality, device volume, power consumption, modulation speed, and output power of the semiconductor lasers. This paper introduces several rapidly developed new semiconductor lasers by comparing their physical connotation, structural design, and preparation methods. Considering the current development status of related industries in China, we suggest that the development of the semiconductor laser industry should be closely combined with industrial application. The performance of the semiconductor lasers should be optimized in a closed-loop manner relying on the market capacity and the strong systematic development ability in China to promote the key technologies. New principles, structures, and processes should be continually introduced into this industry through interdisciplinary integration. Meanwhile, using the policy-oriented advantages in China, we suggest to increase investment in vertical external cavity surface emitting lasers, micro-nano lasers, and topological insulator lasers and conduct mass production and controllable production, thus to seize the leading position in international competition in the related fields.
A novel heavy haul train on road safety status monitoring technique based on fiber laser sensors

A novel heavy haul train safety status monitoring technique based on the fiber laser sensors was proposed in this paper. The principles of the fiber laser sensors were introduced and the schematic of the heavy haul train safety status monitoring was given. The key technologies of the monitoring system were focused, such as the high-performance fiber laser accelerometers, the high-accuracy wavelength demodulation technique, and the in-danger status recognizing technique. The systematic chematic was also proposed.

Principle of Laser Nano-meter Measurement Ruler

In the past applications saw laser as light source only, did not involve in internal structure and physical phenomena of lasers. The efforts had been done to transform single HeNe laser into a sensor, but ceased before great breakthrough. This paper reports the progress in investigating Laser Nano-meter Measurement Ruler, which is just the laser itself. The principle is based on the frequency splitting, mode competition, cavity tuning, etc., of laser, which are done or found by the author and colleagues. The configuration is that employing an inter — cavity birefringence element to split a laser frequency into two frequencies, ⊥light and // light; alternately occurring of strong and medium mode competition as the cavity being tuned, dividing the lasing bandwidth to three equivalent parts; again making the laser longitudinal separation being 4/3 of lasing bandwidth. The consequence is that 丄 light suppressing // light dying out in the first A /8 of mirror displacement, ⊥light and //light oscillating together in the second λ/8, //light suppressing ⊥light dying out in the third λ/8, ⊥light and //light dying out together in the fourth λ/8; with one time of repetition of the four regions the displacement of the mirror is λ /2. Calculating the number of polarization regions the displacement is known. The direction of displacement can be judged by the difference of polarization of each region. The cavity mirror of movement is joined with the object to be measured by a guide. The measurement range: 12 mm, resolution: 79.08 nm, linearity: 5×l0-6, 2σ = 0.314 μm. This achievement is significant for both fields of lasers and metrology.

A New Type of Q-switched and Frequency-doubling Green Laser

A new type of LD pumped Nd: YV04- KTP Q-switched green laser is demonstrated. By using the KTP crystal as both an electro-optic Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal in type II phase matching for generating pulsed green beams, low loss and high efficiency characteristics were realized. Special temperature control technique and aspherical lens with smaller focus length were used in the laser, and all elements were fixed into a whole with epoxy. These measures improved the laser efficiency, output power and laser beam direction stability. Green power with up to 762 W peak output and 12 ns pulse width was obtained.

Development of High Brightness Solid-State Laser Technology

Laser propulsion, laser energy transfer, and other major research directions have proposed a major demand for high brightness solid-state laser technology, making relevant research remain the focus of international attention. This paper presents the macro demand for high brightness solid-state laser technology and summarizes the current situation of technology research in China and abroad, its development trend, and the problems for further development. Based on this, the key technologies of high brightness solid-state lasers are analyzed, and some suggestions are proposed for future development. The slab laser and fiber laser have become the focus of research owing to their outstanding advantages. While the output power of a single laser is constantly improving, the laser output with high brightness can be realized using the beam combination method. Key technologies should be promoted to form a technical system as soon as possible, such as new laser materials, high-ranking semiconductor laser pump source, high precision packaging process, adaptive beam control, and key components for beam combination. It is proposed to establish research projects for the solid state laser technology that is represented by the surface gain slab laser technology and has a good potential for development. The research and accumulation of common basic technologies should be strengthened to lay a solid foundation for the continuous improvement of output brightness, conversion efficiency, and power mass radio of solid-state laser in the future.

The Round-metal-resonator CO2 Laser with Spiral Flow

The transverse flow, coaxial flow and diffusion cooling are the current types of high power CO2 laser for industrial applications. A new CO2 laser is being developed. Its round resonator consists of a number of equally-spaced and coaxially-mounted metal cavity units. Each unit has several channels for gas flow and discharge. The discharge ignited at the interface of the flow channel and the cavity is blown into the cavity, where the particles are excited and gain forms. The electrode structure, metal wall action on the active medium cooling, and the gain distribution have been studied. It is shown that the multi-channel blown-in discharge, intercavity spiral flow and adjacent unit rotating certain angle facilitate the circular uniformity of gain distribution. As a result, a new CO2 laser with high beam quality and compactness can be obtained.

The age of optoelectronics is the consequence of rapid evolution and mutual integration of the fields of micro-electronics, laser technology and material science. The appearance of optical fibers and laser diodes in the 1960s, one major contribution of optoelectronic technology to information industry, has led to the advent of optoelectronic communications. In the 1990s, great advances in optoelectronic crystals and breakthroughs in laser diode technology have made all-solid-state lasers a practical realization. As a consequence, this will enable optoelectronics to make its further contribution to more national pillar industries in the first half of the next century, in various aspects like material processing in advanced manufacturing, optical storage in information technology, laser displays in entertainment, laser fusion power station, nuclear fission material processing, upgrading of laser weapons, etc.

Study on Diode-pumped Solid-state Laser with High Pulsed Repetition Rate

The experimental results were reported on diode-pumped solid state laser with 1 kHz high pulsed repetition rate: 43 mj of single output pulse energy, lower order mode, 43% of light-light conversion efficiency. For diode end pumping, it is quite easy to obtain high efficiency and high output beam quality, the cooling configuration of laser media is simple, too. With fine design, the thermal effect induced by moderate power could be within control.
Based on rate equation analysis, the influences of various characters on output performance were discussed and the optimum experimental parameters were studied, such as the focal size of pump light. In general, the smaller focal size, the lower pumping power threshold. But the output laser power was not maximum. The optimum focal size should be determined according to the actual output laser power.
