Utilizing intelligent technologies in construction and demolition waste management: From a systematicreview to an implementation framework

Frontiers of Engineering Management doi: 10.1007/s42524-024-0144-4

Abstract: The rapid increase in global urbanization, along with the growth of the construction industry, highlights the urgent need for effective management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Intelligent technologies offer a viable solution to this critical challenge. However, there remains a significant challenge in integrating these technologies into a cohesive framework. This study conducts a quantitative analysis of 214 papers from 2000 to 2023, highlighting the extensive use of artificial intelligence (AI) and building information modeling (BIM), along with geographic information systems (GIS) and big data (BD). A further qualitative analysis of 73 selected papers investigates the use of seven different intelligent technologies in the context of C&D waste management (CDWM). To overcome current limitations in knowledge, future research should concentrate on (1) the comprehensive integration of technology, (2) inclusive studies throughout all lifecycle phases of CDWM, and (3) the continued examination of new technologies, such as blockchain. Based on these insights, this study suggests a strategic framework for the effective implementation of intelligent technologies in CDWM. This framework aims to assist professionals in merging various technologies, undertaking lifecycle-wide research, and narrowing the divide between existing and new technologies. It also lays a solid foundation for future academic work to examine specific intelligent technologies, conduct comparative studies, and refine strategic decisions. Regular updates on technological developments are essential for stakeholders to consistently enhance CDWM standards.

Visualizing blockchain in construction projects: Status quo, challenges, and a guideline for implementation

Frontiers of Engineering Management doi: 10.1007/s42524-024-4034-6

Abstract: The use of blockchain technology in construction engineering and management (CEM) is increasing, yet current presentations of blockchain-based data management processes (DMP) are considered too primitive to encourage the technology’s broader diffusion in CEM. This research aims to provide a set of guidelines for visualizing blockchain-based DMP in CEM. First, a conceptual model is proposed to guide the research design. Next, 49 cases published in scholarly papers are reviewed, revealing an increasing use of dashboards to visualize blockchain-based DMP. Then, four challenges for visualizing blockchain are identified, namely, data diversity, visualization tools, visualization mediums, and visualization domain. Finally, we present guidelines for visualizing blockchain in construction projects, which involve: (1) targeting the visualization domain, (2) planning the blockchain visualization, (3) choosing a visualization tool, (4) selecting a visualization medium, and (5) fine-tuning the visualization solution. This research encourages researchers to further develop visualization solutions to harness blockchain benefits in CEM.

Systematic review for geo-authentic Lonicerae Japonicae Flos

Xingyue Yang, Yali Liu, Aijuan Hou, Yang Yang, Xin Tian, Liyun He

Frontiers of Medicine 2017, Volume 11, Issue 2,   Pages 203-213 doi: 10.1007/s11684-017-0504-0

Abstract:

In traditional Chinese medicine, Lonicerae Japonicae Flos is commonly used as anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antipyretic herbal medicine, and geo-authentic herbs are believed to present the highest quality among all samples from different regions. To discuss the current situation and trend of geo-authentic Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, we searched Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database, Chinese Journal Full-text Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Full-text Database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Wanfang, and PubMed. We investigated all studies up to November 2015 pertaining to quality assessment, discrimination, pharmacological effects, planting or processing, or ecological system of geo-authentic Lonicerae Japonicae Flos. Sixty-five studies mainly discussing about chemical fingerprint, component analysis, planting and processing, discrimination between varieties, ecological system, pharmacological effects, and safety were systematically reviewed. By analyzing these studies, we found that the key points of geo-authentic Lonicerae Japonicae Flos research were quality and application. Further studies should focus on improving the quality by selecting the more superior of all varieties and evaluating clinical effectiveness.
