Autoimmunity in acute ischemic stroke and the role of blood—brain barrier: the dark side or the light one?

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 4,   Pages 420-426 doi: 10.1007/s11684-019-0688-6

Abstract: This article presents a synopsis of the current data on the mechanisms of blood—brain barrier (BBB) alteration and autoimmune response in acute ischemic stroke. Most researchers confirm the relationship between the severity of immunobiochemical changes and clinical outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is accompanied by aseptic inflammation, which alters the brain tissue and exposes the co-stimulatory molecules of the immune system and the neuronal antigens. To date, BBB is not considered the border between the immune system and central nervous system, and the local immune subsystems are found within and behind the BBB. BBB disruption contributes to the leakage of brain autoantigens and induction of secondary autoimmune response to neuronal antigens and long-term inflammation. Glymphatic system function is altered and jeopardized both in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke types. The receptors of innate immunity (toll-like receptor-2 and toll-like receptor-4) are also involved in acute ischemia—reperfusion injury. Immune response is related to the key processes of blood clotting and fibrinolysis. At the same time, the stroke-induced immune activation may promote reparation phenomena in the brain. Subsequent research on the reduction of the acute ischemic brain injury through the target regulation of the immune response is promising.

Emulsification for castor biomass oil

Dongxiang ZHANG, Yuanping LIN, Anmei LI, V. V. TARASOV

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 96-101 doi: 10.1007/s11705-010-0553-2

Abstract: The effect of the emulsifier formula on the stability of castor oil-water system was studied through compounding three groups of emulsifiers from the aspects of stability factor of absorbance, centrifuge stability, demulsification time in quiescence, appearance of the droplets, and viscosity. The best emulsifier formula for castor biomass oil was the composite formula of sorbitan monooleate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate. Correlation exists between the stability of emulsion and the viscosity/particle size of the droplets, with better stability in the case of greater viscosity or narrower distribution of particle size in the emulsion of castor oil-water system. Methanol added to the castor oil-water system may decrease the viscosity of the emulsion. Comparing the castor oil-water emulsion with methanol-castor oil-water emulsion, the optimal hydrophilic and lipophilic balance (HLB) value based on castor oil-water system was acquired between 6.6 and 7.5, while the optimal HLB value based on the methanol-castor oil-water system was between 5.5 and 6.0. The optimal HLB value of methanol-castor oil-water system gradually moved to that of castor oil-water emulsion with adding more water.

Abstract: has the advantage of broadband saturable absorption from the visible to the infrared bands. Herein, the two-dimensional material saturable absorber (SA) of the family was first applied experimentally in a wideband tunable passively Q-switched Yb-doped fiber laser. High-quality crystals were synthesized by the flux zone method. The SA with fewer layers was further prepared via a modified mechanical exfoliation procedure. Meanwhile, stable wavelength-tunable passive Q-switching pulse operation was obtained in a Yb-doped fiber ring cavity based on the SA, where the central wavelength can be continuously tuned from 1040.89 to 1092.85 nm. Results suggest that has wideband saturable absorption properties, and that the tunable pulse laser can provide a convenient and simple source for practical applications.

Besides, an intelligent adaptive based control law was proposed and the optimization approach is employed to solve the constrained control allocation problem. The results show good closed loop performance and validate the intelligent optimization approach of constrained control allocation for flight control.

Mortarless structures based on topological interlocking

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2012, Volume 6, Issue 2,   Pages 188-197 doi: 10.1007/s11709-012-0156-8

Abstract: We review the principle of topological interlocking and analyze the properties of the mortarless structures whose design is based on this principle. We concentrate on structures built of osteomorphic blocks – the blocks possessing specially engineered contact surfaces allowing assembling various 2D and 3D structures. These structures are easy to build and can be made demountable. They are flexible, resistant to macroscopic fractures and tolerant to missing blocks. The blocks are kept in place without keys or connectors that are the weakest elements of the conventional interlocking structures. The overall structural integrity of these structures depends on the force imposed by peripheral constraint. The peripheral constraint can be provided in various ways: by an external frame or features of site topography, internal pre-stressed cables/tendons, or self-weight and is a necessary auxiliary element of the structure. The constraining force also determines the degree of delamination developing between the blocks due to bending and thus controls the overall flexibility of the structure thus becoming a new design parameter.

Effect of exhaust gas recirculation and ethyl hexyl nitrate additive on biodiesel fuelled diesel engine for the reduction of NO

R MURTHY, V. V. SUBBARAO, K. Vijaya KUMAR

Frontiers in Energy 2012, Volume 6, Issue 3,   Pages 304-310 doi: 10.1007/s11708-012-0195-9

Abstract: Cetane improvers reduce the ignition delay, which in turn reduces the combustion temperatures thereby reduce NO emissions. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) proved to be an effective way to reduce the NO emissions. In this present experimental work, a combination of exhaust gas recirculation and cetane improver ethyl hexyl nitrate (EHN) is used to investigate the performance and exhaust emissions of a single cylinder four stroke naturally aspirated direct injection and air cooled diesel engine. Test results show that the brake thermal efficiency increases with the increase in the percentage of EGR which is accompanied by a reduction in brake specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperatures, and that bio-diesel with cetane improver under 20% EGR reduces NO emissions by 33% when compared to baseline fuel without EGR. However carbon monoxide (CO), hydro carbon (HC) and smoke emissions increase with an increase in percentage of EGR.
