Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 421-436 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-1952-7

Abstract: Fungi play an important role in dying wastewater treatment. In this work, the mycelia of exhibited an excellent capacity in decolorizing coomassie brilliant blue (CBB). The results demonstrated that the mycelia could treat CBB with high concentrations over a broad range of pH and temperature. The decolorization rate of 99.19% and the removal rate of 16.31 mg·L ·h were realized. The mycelia could be recycled from decolorizing process for 19 times, indicating a good re-usability. It verified that the lignin peroxidase (121.65 U·L ) and manganese peroxidase (36.77 U·L ) were involved in the degradation and decolorization process of CBB. Toxicity assessments indicated the seed germination rate was up to 82.22% while inhibition to decreased dramatically and no significant effect on growth was found. The removal of CBB was a synergistic process accomplished by adsorption and biodegradation. The mycelia could be used for eco-friendly CBB treatment.

Nanosilver anchored alginate/poly(acrylic acid/acrylamide) double-network hydrogel composites for efficient catalytic degradation of organic dyes

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 7,   Pages 893-905 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2290-8

Abstract: A novel alginate/poly(acrylic acid/acrylamide) double-network hydrogel composite with silver nanoparticles was successfully fabricated using the sol–gel method. The presence of carboxyl and amide groups in the network structure provided abundant active sites for complexing silver ions, facilitating the in situ reduction and confinement of silver nanoparticles. In batch experiments, the optimal silver loading was 20%, and 5 mmol·L–1 of p-nitrophenol was completely degraded in 113 s with a rate constant value of 4.057 × 10−2 s–1. In the tap water system and simulated seawater system, the degradation time of p-nitrophenol at the same concentration was 261 and 276 s, respectively, with a conversion rate above 99%. In the fixed-bed experiment, the conversion rate remained above 74% after 3 h at a flowing rate of 7 mL·min–1. After 8 cycling tests, the conversion rate remained at 98.7%. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited outstanding performance in the degradation experiment of four typical organic dyes.

carbon-hybridized and amine-modified polyacrylonitrile nanofibers toward ultrahigh and recyclable metal ion and dye

Fengli Li, Chuang Chen, Yuda Wang, Wenpeng Li, Guoli Zhou, Haoqin Zhang, Jie Zhang, Jingtao Wang

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 4,   Pages 984-997 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-2000-3

Abstract: Nanofibers with high specific surface area and chemical stability have broad prospects in the applications of adsorption. However, the adsorption capacity is limited by the scarcity of adsorption groups and storage space. Herein, the activated carbon-hybridized and amine-modified nanofibers are prepared by integrating activated carbon (AC) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via electrospinning method and the subsequent amination, which could provide additional storage space and adsorption groups for ultrahigh adsorption capability. Thus, the obtained amine-rich porous PAN nanofibers (APAN/AC) readily realized the ultrahigh adsorption capacity for metal ions and dyes in wastewater. Specifically, the adsorption capacity of APAN/AC nanofibers were 284 mg·g for Cr(VI) and 248 mg·g for methyl orange, which were almost 2 and 4 times than that of amine-modified nanofibers (APAN) and carbon-hybridized nanofibers (PAN/AC), respectively. Moreover, the AC inhibited the chain mobility of polymer matrix and thereby endowing APAN/AC nanofibers with excellent recyclability. The adsorption capability retained 80% after nine adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption kinetics and corresponding mechanism were further explored. This strategy combines the advantages of polymer nanofibers and AC, opening a new avenue for developing next-generation absorbent materials.
