Digital-Twin-Enhanced Quality Prediction for the Composite Materials Article

Yucheng Wang, Fei Tao, Ying Zuo, Meng Zhang, Qinglin Qi

Engineering 2023, Volume 22, Issue 3,   Pages 23-33 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.08.019

Abstract:

Composite materials are widely used in many fields due to their excellent properties. Quality defects in composite materials can lead to lower quality components, creating potential risk of accidents. Experimental and simulation methods are commonly used to predict the quality of composite materials. However, it is difficult to predict the quality of composite materials accurately due to the uncertain curing environment and incomplete feature space. To address this problem, a digital twin (DT) visual model of a composite material is first constructed. Then, a static autoclave DT virtual model is coupled with a variable composite material DT virtual model to construct a model of the curing process. Features are added to the proposed model by generating simulated data to enhance the quality prediction. An extreme learning machine (ELM) for quality prediction is trained with the generated data. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through result analysis.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 9,   Pages 1234-1246 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000426

Abstract:

It is necessary to construct an adaptive model to cope with process non-stationaries. In this study, a novel quality-related locally weighted soft sensing method is designed for non-stationary processes based on a Bayesian network with . Specifically, a is proposed where quality-oriented are extracted and further applied to a double-layer similarity measurement algorithm. The proposed soft sensing method tries to find a general approach for non-stationary processes via quality-related information where the concepts of local similarities and window confidence are explained in detail. The performance of the developed method is demonstrated by application to a numerical example and a debutanizer column. It is shown that the proposed method outperforms competitive methods in terms of the accuracy of predicting key quality variables.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2019, Volume 20, Issue 5,   Pages 716-730 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1700737

Abstract:

Underwater image compression is an important and essential part of an underwater image transmission system. An assessment and prediction method of effectively compressed image quality can assist the system in adjusting its compression ratio during the image compression process, thereby improving the efficiency of the image transmission system. This study first estimates the perceived quality of underwater image compression based on embedded coding compression and compressive sensing, then builds a model based on the mapping between image activity measurement (IAM) and bits per pixel and structural similarity (BPP-SSIM) curves, next obtains model parameters by linear fitting, and finally predicts the perceived quality of the image compression method based on IAM, compression ratio, and compression strategy. Experimental results show that the model can effectively fit the quality curve of underwater image compression. According to the rules of parameters in this model, the perceived quality of underwater compressed images can be estimated within a small error range. The presented method can effectively estimate the perceived quality of underwater compressed images, balance the relationship between the compression ratio and compression quality, reduce the pressure on the data cache, and thus improve the efficiency of the underwater image communication system.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 9,   Pages 1169-1178 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000234

Abstract: is of vital importance in compressing three-dimensional (3D) medical imaging data. Optimal compression parameters need to be determined based on the specific quality requirement. In , regarded as the state-of-the-art compression tool, the quantization parameter (QP) plays a dominant role in controlling quality. The direct application of a video-based scheme in predicting the ideal parameters for 3D cannot guarantee satisfactory results. In this paper we propose a parameter prediction scheme to achieve efficient . Its kernel is a support vector regression (SVR) based learning model that is capable of predicting the optimal QP from both video-based and structural image features extracted directly from raw data, avoiding time-consuming processes such as pre-encoding and iteration, which are often needed in existing techniques. Experimental results on several datasets verify that our approach outperforms current video-based methods.

Quality Markers of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Concept, Progress, and Perspective Review

Yazhuo Li, Ying Xie, Yufei He, Wenbin Hou, Maoliang Liao, Changxiao Liu

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 5,   Pages 888-894 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.01.015

Abstract:

As the most important complementary medication against a variety of diseases, traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been extensively applied over thousands of years. Current quality control of herbal medicines, however, is in great dispute. Unlike chemical drugs, which have clear and validated quality standards, the content of only one (or a few) compounds of many herbs and preparations is currently assessed as an indicator of quality, even though the assessed compound(s) is neither closely associated with the efficacy nor representative of the medicine as a whole. Based on the clinical use, compatibility of multiple component prescriptions, and manufacturing process of TCM, the new concept of a TCM quality marker that was proposed in previous work is discussed further here. In addition, practical technological approaches are described for the qualitative analysis and quantification of TCMs including herbs, processed products, and preparations, which lead to the discovery and identification of specific chemicals as quality markers and new quality control patterns. The progress that has been made in TCM quality control is also addressed. This work provides useful information for the quality control of herbal medicines in the future.

The scientific faith that earthquake is predictable should be insisted—the successful prediction of three strong aftershocks of Wenchuan Earthquake

Wang Chengmin

Strategic Study of CAE 2009, Volume 11, Issue 6,   Pages 107-110

Abstract:

Is earthquake predictable? This question has been discussed a lot by earthquake researchers and common people after the Wenchuan Earthquake. The specialists in Chinese Earthquake Prediction Consultation Committee started the aftershock prediction research after the earthquake to support emergency rescue and disaster relief with practical action. From May 15 to August 15, the committee formally reported prediction results for 3 times and the three strong aftershocks, i.e.M 6.0 earthquake on May 18 in Jiangyou, M 6.4 earthquake on May 25 in Qingchuan and M 6.1 earthquake on August 1 in Beichuan, have been correctly predicted.Through predicting aftershock isn't so difficult as predicting main shock, those people who think earthquake can be predicted after decades of generations and despise the academic viewpoint that earthquake is predictable should think over the fact that the prediction of all three aftershocks was correct without any miss report, and treat the academic viewpoint equally.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 11,   Pages 1601-1615 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2200534

Abstract: Technological advancements continue to expand the communications industry’s potential. Images, which are an important component in strengthening communication, are widely available. Therefore, image quality assessment (IQA) is critical in improving content delivered to end users. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) used in IQA face two common challenges. One issue is that these methods fail to provide the best representation of the image. The other issue is that the models have a large number of parameters, which easily leads to overfitting. To address these issues, the dense convolution network (DSC-Net), a model with fewer parameters, is proposed for . Moreover, it is obvious that the use of multimodal data for has improved the performance of applications. As a result, fuses the texture features extracted using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) method and spatial features extracted using DSC-Net and predicts the image quality. The performance of the proposed framework on the benchmark synthetic datasets LIVE, TID2013, and KADID-10k demonstrates that the MDSC-Net approach achieves good performance over state-of-the-art methods for the NR-IQA task.

Strategic Study of CAE 2022, Volume 24, Issue 2,   Pages 1-9 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2022.02.001

Abstract:

High-quality manufacturing is an innovative model that supports quality transformation and increases high-quality supply, and it is crucial for upgrading China’s manufacturing industry. Studying the technology system and development strategy for highquality manufacturing is significant for boosting China’s manufacturing sector. In this study, we first identify the problems regarding the manufacturing quality development in China and examine the key issues through a four-in-one framework that integrates supply side, demand side, government supervision, and quality infrastructure. Subsequently, we explore the connotation and characteristics of highquality manufacturing, establish a technology system that covers the entire process of design, production, operation, and maintenance, and propose several countermeasures. Our study shows that China’s manufacturing quality still suffers from low quality efficiency, limited international influence of manufacturing brands, and difficulty in quality upgrade of the industrial chain. The technology system we proposed is comprised of quality infrastructure, quality generic technologies, lifecycle quality control technologies, and resource elements. Furthermore, we suggest that China should strengthen the construction of high-quality manufacturing standards system, accelerate the upgrading of industrial chain quality, innovate the quality development mechanism, improve the supply capacity of quality resource elements, achieve breakthroughs in new technologies, and consolidate the quality infrastructure.
