A range of plant species produce root exudates that inhibit ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms. This biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) capacity can decrease N loss and increase N uptake from the rhizosphere. This study sought evidence for the existence and magnitude of BNI capacity in canola ( Brassica napus). Seedlings of three canola cultivars, Brachiaria humidicola(BNI positive) and wheat ( Triticum aestivum) were grown in a hydroponic system. Root exudates were collected and their inhibition of the ammonia oxidizing bacterium, Nitrosospira multiformis, was tested. Subsequent pot experiments were used to test the inhibition of native nitrifying communities in soil. Root exudates from canola significantly reduced nitrification rates of both N. multiformis cultures and native soil microbial communities. The level of nitrification inhibition across the three cultivars was similar to the well-studied high-BNI species B. humidicola. BNI capacity of canola may have implications for the N dynamics in farming systems and the N uptake efficiency of crops in rotational farming systems. By reducing nitrification rates canola crops may decrease N losses, increase plant N uptake and encourage microbial N immobilization and subsequently increase the pool of organic N that is available for mineralization during the following cereal crops.

Agricultural intensification and the subsequent decline of mixed farming systems has led to an increase in continuous cropping with only a few fallow or break years, undermining global soil health. Arable-ley rotations incorporating temporary pastures (leys) lasting 1–4 years may alleviate soil degradation by building soil fertility and improving soil structure. However, the majority of previous research on arable-ley rotations has utilized either grass or grass-clover leys within ungrazed systems. Multispecies leys, containing a mix of grasses, legumes, and herbs, are rapidly gaining popularity due to their promotion in agri-environment schemes and potential to deliver greater ecosystem services than conventional grass or grass-clover leys. Livestock grazing in arable-ley rotations may increase the economic resilience of these systems, despite limited research of the effects of multispecies leys on ruminant health and greenhouse gas emissions. This review aims to evaluate previous research on multispecies leys, highlighting areas for future research and the potential benefits and disbenefits on soil quality and livestock productivity. The botanical composition of multispecies leys is crucial, as legumes, deep rooted perennial plants (e.g., Onobrychis viciifolia and Cichorium intybus) and herbs (e.g., Plantago lanceolata) can increase soil carbon, improve soil structure, reduce nitrogen fertilizer requirements, and promote the recovery of soil fauna (e.g., earthworms) in degraded arable soils while delivering additional environmental benefits (e.g., biological nitrification inhibition and enteric methane reduction). Multispecies leys have the potential to deliver biologically driven regenerative agriculture, but more long-term research is needed to underpin evidence-based policy and farmer guidance.

Microbial communities play crucial roles in pollutant removal and system stability in biological systems for coking wastewater (CWW) treatment, but a comprehensive understanding of their structure and functions is still lacking. A five-month survey of four sequential bioreactors, anoxic 1/oxic 1/anoxic 2/oxic 2 (A1/O1/A2/O2), was carried out in a full-scale CWW treatment system in China to elucidate operational performance and microbial ecology. The results showed that A1/O1/A2/O2 had excellent and stable performance for nitrogen removal. Both total nitrogen (TN; (17.38 ± 6.89) mg·L−1) and ammonium–nitrogen (NH4+-N; (2.10 ± 1.34) mg·L−1) in the final biological effluent satisfied the Chinese national standards for CWW. Integrated analysis of 16S ribosome RNA (rRNA) sequencing and metagenomic sequencing showed that the bacterial communities and metagenomic function profiles of A1 and O1 shared similar functional structures, while those of A2 significantly varied from those of other bioreactors (p < 0.05). The results indicated that microbial activity was strongly connected with activated sludge function. Nitrosospira, Nitrosomonas, and SM1A02 were responsible for nitrification during the primary anoxic–oxic (AO) stage and Azoarcus and Thauera acted as important denitrifiers in A2. Nitrogen cycling-related enzymes and genes work in the A1/O1/A2/O2 system. Moreover, the hao genes catalyzing hydroxylamine dehydrogenase (EC 1.7.2.6) and the napA and napB genes catalyzing nitrate reductase (EC 1.9.6.1) played important roles in the nitrification and denitrification processes in the primary and secondary AO stages, respectively. The mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS)/total solids (TS), TN removal rate, total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate, and NH4+-N removal rate were the most important environmental factors for regulating the structure of core bacterial genera and nitrogen-cycling genes. Proteobacteria were the potential main participants in nitrogen metabolism in the A1/O1/A2/O2 system for CWW treatment. This study provides an original and comprehensive understanding of the microbial community and functions at the gene level, which is crucial for the efficient and stable operation of the full-scale biological process for CWW treatment.

Elastic modulus and thermal stress in coating during heat cycling with different substrate shapes

The elastic modulus of a deposit (Ed) can be obtained by monitoring the temperature (?T) and curvature (?k) of a one-side coated long plate, namely, a one-dimensional (1D) deformation model. The aim of this research is to design an experimental setup that proves whether a 1D deformation model can be scaled for complex geometries. The setup includes a laser displacement sensor mounted on a robotic arm capable of scanning a specimen surface and measuring its deformation. The reproducibility of the results is verified by comparing the present results with Stony Brook University Laboratory’s results. The ?k-?T slope error is less than 8%, and the Ed estimation error is close to 2%. These values reveal the repeatability of the experiments. Several samples fabricated with aluminum as the substrate and 100MXC nanowire (Fe and Cr alloy) as the deposit are analyzed and compared with those in finite element (FE) simulations. The linear elastic behavior of 1D (flat long plate) and 2D (squared plate) specimens during heating/cooling cycles is demonstrated by the high linearity of all ?k-?T curves (over 97%). The Ed values are approximately equal for 1D and 2D analyses, with a median of 96 GPa and standard deviation of 2 GPa. The correspondence between the experimental and simulated results for the 1D and 2D specimens reveals that deformation and thermal stress in coated specimens can be predicted regardless of specimen geometry through FE modeling and by using the experimental value of Ed. An example of a turbine-blade-shaped substrate is presented to validate the approach.
