White blood cell count and the incidence of hyperuricemia: insights from a community-based study

Jian Liu, Pingyan Shen, Xiaobo Ma, Xialian Yu, Liyan Ni, Xu Hao, Weiming Wang, Nan Chen

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 6,   Pages 741-746 doi: 10.1007/s11684-017-0579-7

Abstract: Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The relationship between HUA and white blood cell (WBC) count remains unknown. A sampling survey for CKD was conducted in Sanlin community in 2012 and 2014. CKD was defined as proteinuria in at least the microalbuminuric stage or an estimated GFR of 60 mL/(min·1.73 m ). HUA was defined as serum uric acid>420 µmol/L in men and>360 µmol/L in women. This study included 1024 participants. The prevalence of HUA was 17.77%. Patients with HUA were more likely to have higher levels of WBC count, which was positively associated with HUA prevalence. This association was also observed in participants without CKD, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, or obesity. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that WBC count was independently associated with the risk for HUA in male and female participants. Compared with participants without HUA, inflammatory factors such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin 6 increased in participants with HUA. Hence, WBC count is positively associated with HUA, and this association is independent of conventional risk factors for CKD.

Immunological and virological characteristics of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 superinfection: implications in vaccine design

Yang Gao, Wen Tian, Xiaoxu Han, Feng Gao

Frontiers of Medicine 2017, Volume 11, Issue 4,   Pages 480-489 doi: 10.1007/s11684-017-0594-8

Abstract:

Superinfection is frequently detected among individuals infected by human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1). Superinfection occurs at similar frequencies at acute and chronic infection stages but less frequently than primary infection. This observation indicates that the immune responses elicited by natural HIV-1 infection may play a role in curb of superinfection; however, these responses are not sufficiently strong to completely prevent superinfection. Thus, a successful HIV-1 vaccine likely needs to induce more potent and broader immune responses than those elicited by primary infection. On the other hand, potent and broad neutralization responses are more often detected after superinfection than during monoinfection. This suggests that broadly neutralizing antibodies are more likely induced by sequential immunization of multiple different immunogens than with only one form of envelope glycoprotein immunogens. Understanding why the protection from superinfection by immunity induced by primary infection is insufficient and if superinfection can lead to cross-reactive immune responses will be highly informative for HIV-1 vaccine design.

Engineering the Thermoelectrical Properties of PEDOT:PSS by Alkali Metal Ion Effect Article

Jingjin Dong, Jian Liu, Xinkai Qiu, Ryan Chiechi, L. Jan Anton Koster, Giuseppe Portale

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 5,   Pages 647-654 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.02.011

Abstract:

Engineering the electrical properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) holds great potential for various applications such as sensors, thermoelectric (TE) generators, and hole transport layers in solar cells. Various strategies have been applied to achieve optimal electrical properties, including base solution post-treatments. However, the working mechanism and the exact details of the structural transformations induced by base post-treatments are still unclear. In this work, we present a comparative study on the post-treatment effects of using three common and green alkali base solutions: namely LiOH, NaOH, and KOH. The structural modifications induced in the film by the base post-treatments are studied by techniques including atomic force microscopy, grazingincidence
wide-angle X-ray scattering, ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Base-induced structural modifications are responsible for an improvement in the TE power factor of the films, which depends on the basic solution used. The results are explained on the basis of the different affinity between the alkali cations and the PSS chains, which determines PEDOT dedoping. The results presented here shed light on the structural reorganization occurring in PEDOT:PSS when exposed to high-pH solutions and may serve as inspiration to create future pH-/ion-responsive devices for various applications.
