According to the diameter of the tunnel and the geological conditions, considered factors of equipment selection and the choice of models of the large diameter tunnel of the Beijing underground diameter tunnel project were analysed, the main functions and geological suitability of shield type configure were described, and the main data of the structure and equipped capability were calculated and described. The issues and problems that need to be paid attention for selection and design of shield were proposed.

China southwest area locates at the edge of Qinghai-Tibet plateau and is close to east side of collision zone between India plate and Eurasian plate where the geologic structure is quite complicated with serious geologic hazard. Combined with the survey and design, construction and operation of such important trunk railway lines as Bao-Cheng railway, Gui-Kun railway, Cheng-Kun railway, Xiang-Yu railway, Nan-Kun railway, Nei-Kun railway and Yu-Huai railway, etc., in complicated southwest mountainous region, the general condition of geologic hazard of southwest railway is summarized and the railway geologic survey and engineering control technique experience for several kinds of main geologic hazard are systematically presented.

Datong—Qinhuangdao line, as the first electrified double-track heavy-haul line dedicated to coal transportation in China, extends from Beitongpu line in the west, reaches Qinhuangdao in the east, and opened in Dec., 1992, totaling 653 km with designed volume of 1×108 t/a. In order to meet the requirements of national economical development, the transport capacity of the line must be expanded rapidly. Depending on independent innovation, MOR,for the first time in the world, realized the integration between GSM-R and Locotrol, the integration between 800 MHz digital radio and Locotrol, and the integration between a single set of Locotrol and SS4. Meanwhile, it developed auxiliary equipment for heavy-haul transportation through combining 2 Hexie heavy-duty locomotives with controllable train ends. Relying on integration innovation, it succeeded in operating 20 kt-level combined heavy-haul train on Datong—Qinhuangdao line, which triples the annual volume of the line from 1×108 t in 2002 to 3×108 t in 2007.
