Asghar RAHMATI,Lohrasb FARAMARZI,Manouchehr SANEI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 448-455 doi: 10.1007/s11709-014-0262-x

Abstract: Rock mass classification system is very suitable for various engineering design and stability analysis. classification method is confirmed by Japan Highway Public Corporation that this method can figure out either strength or deformability of rock mass, further appropriating the amount of rock bolts, thickness of shotcrete, and size of pitch of steel ribs just after the blasting procedure. Based on these advantages of method, in this study, according to data of five deep and long tunnels in Iran, two equations for estimating the value of method from and classification systems were developed. These equations as a new method were able to optimize the support system for and classification systems. From classification and its application in these case studies, it is pointed out that the method for the design of support systems in underground working is more reliable than the and classification systems.

Development of barium@alginate adsorbents for sulfate removal in lithium refining

Lisa Xu, Kaifei Chen, George Q. Chen, Sandra E. Kentish, Gang (Kevin) Li

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 1,   Pages 198-207 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-1968-z

Abstract: The demand for lithium has been steadily growing in recent years due to the boom of electric cars. High purity lithium is commonly used in the manufacture of battery grade lithium electrolyte. Sulfate residuals originating from acid leaching of lithium ores must be limited to below 20 mg·L during refining. There are methods to remove sulfate such as membrane processing and chemical precipitation using barium salts. However, membrane separation is unable to achieve the required purity while chemical precipitation often causes secondary contamination with barium and requires extra filtration processes that lead to increased processing costs. In this study, we developed a polymeric matrix entrapped with barium ions as a novel adsorbent to selectively adsorb sulfate in aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was prepared by dropwise injection method where alginate droplets were crosslinked with barium to form hydrogel microcapsules. In a typical scenario, the microcapsules had a diameter of 3 mm and contained 5 wt-% alginate. The microcapsules could successfully reduce sulfate concentration in a solution from 100 to 16 mg·L , exceeding the removal target. However, the microcapsules were mechanically unstable in the presence of an excess amount of sulfate. Hence, calcium ions were added as a secondary crosslinking agent to improve the integrity of the microcapsules. The two-step Ca/Ba@alginate microcapsules showed an exceptional adsorption performance, reducing the sulfate concentration to as low as 0.02 mg·L . Since the sulfate selective microcapsules can be easily removed from the aqueous system and do not result in secondary barium contamination, these Ca/Ba@alginate adsorbents will find applications in ultra-refining of lithium in industry.

Personalizing a Service Robot by Learning Human Habits from Behavioral Footprints Article

Kun Li, Max Q.-H. Meng

Engineering 2015, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 79-84 doi: 10.15302/J-ENG-2015024

Abstract:

For a domestic personal robot, personalized services are as important as predesigned tasks, because the robot needs to adjust the home state based on the operator's habits. An operator's habits are composed of cues, behaviors, and rewards. This article introduces behavioral footprints to describe the operator's behaviors in a house, and applies the inverse reinforcement learning technique to extract the operator's habits, represented by a reward function. We implemented the proposed approach with a mobile robot on indoor temperature adjustment, and compared this approach with a baseline method that recorded all the cues and behaviors of the operator. The result shows that the proposed approach allows the robot to reveal the operator's habits accurately and adjust the environment state accordingly.

Alkali-thermal gasification and hydrogen generation potential of biomass

Farnood, Charles Q. Jia

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 11, Issue 3,   Pages 369-378 doi: 10.1007/s11705-017-1662-y

Abstract: Generating hydrogen gas from biomass is one approach to lowering dependencies on fossil fuels for energy and chemical feedstock, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Using both equilibrium simulations and batch experiments with NaOH as a model alkaline, this study established the technical feasibility of converting various biomasses (e.g., glucose, cellulose, xylan and lignin) into H -rich gas via catalyst-free, alkali-thermal gasification at moderate temperatures (as low as 300 °C). This process could produce more H with less carbon-containing gases in the product than other comparable methods. It was shown that alkali-thermal gasification follows , with carbonate being the solid product which is different from the one suggested in the literature. Moreover, the concept of hydrogen generation potential (H -GP)—the maximum amount of H that a biomass can yield, was introduced. For a given biomass C H O , the H -GP would be moles of H . It was demonstrated experimentally that the H -GP was achievable by adjusting the amounts of H O and NaOH, temperature and pressure.

Experimental analysis on strength and failure modes of wood beam-column connections

Zhenhua HUANG,Sheldon Q SHI,Liping CAI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 260-269 doi: 10.1007/s11709-014-0261-y

Abstract: This research experimentally examined the strength, failure modes, and behaviors of dowel-bearing and fiber-bearing wood beam-column connections and explored the effects of cyclic loading on the strength, failure modes, and behaviors of those connections. Base on limited numbers of exploratory laboratory tests (6 preliminary tests in total), the authors observed that the typical bolted connection (dowel-bearing type wood beam-column connection with fiber-bearing surfaces) showed good behavior (large peak moment) under the monotonic loads, and the tenon joint connection (fiber-bearing wood beam-column connection) showed good behavior under cyclic loads. The cyclic property of loading reduced the strength of the dowel-bearing type wood beam-column connections, but increased the strength of fiber-bearing type wood beam-column connections. More importantly, the authors identified a possible location of safety concern in current national design specifications (NDS) standards for the typical bolted connection (dowel-bearing connection with fiber bearing surface) under cyclic loading because the tested value was smaller than the NDS calculated value. But, because of the small amount of tests conducted, no final conclusion can be drawn based on those preliminary observations yet. A large number of repetitive laboratory tests should be conducted.
