Nutrient Sensing for the Future of Land-Farming Animal and Aquaculture Nutrition Perspective

Zongyu Gao, Chengdong Liu, Kangsen Mai, Gen He

Engineering 2023, Volume 23, Issue 4,   Pages 112-117 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.05.019

Abstract:

Feeding is vital for animal growth and the maintenance of health. However, the underlying mechanisms that mediate dietary performance have long been a so-called black box. It is only during recent years that studies have demonstrated that nutrients act as signals that can be sensed by cells and organisms and that play vital roles in gene expression and metabolism. Multiple signaling pathways have been identified as being responsible for the sensing of discrete nutrients. While successes have been achieved in the exploitation of nutrient-sensing signals in drug discovery and disease control, applications based on the sensing and metabolic control of major nutrients (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, etc.) in aquaculture and land-farmed animals remain in their infancy. We thus provide a tentative perspective on future research topics and applications of nutrient sensing in animal nutrition.

Xie Shouqi,Zhang Wenbing,Han Dong and Mai Kangsen

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 3,   Pages 29-36 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.03.005

Abstract:

This paper reviews the research in nutrition and feed development in aquaculture animals in recent years, and analyzes the problem and future development of feed industry. In past 10 years, great advances have been achieved in aquaculture animal nutrient requirements, feeding, larval feed, broodstock nutrition, additives etc. But there are still some problems regarding aquafeed including high feed conversion ratio, high environmental discharge, high feed cost and unstable profit. In the near future, the research and development of aquaculture nutrition and feed should focus on "high efficiency, safety, economic and environmental neutral". New concepts from ecology and genomics technologies should be applied in the study on molecular mechanism of nutrition and metabolism, nutrient requirements and accurate feed and feeding, feed quality control and processing, animal quality regulation, etc. The government should provide more opportunities for cooperation between scientists from different areas and long term support.

Zhang Jihong, Lin Fan and Fang Jianguang

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 3,   Pages 85-89 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.03.014

Abstract:

With the growing scale of the mariculture industry, the problem of storage overcapacity in aquaculture has caused serious damage to the aquatic environment and the aggravated the dangers of disease, which have hurt the sustainable development of this industry in the long term. So it is urgent to strengthen the research on carrying capacity and to set up the scientific and adaptive management strategies. This paper reviews the progress of research and existing problems relating to the mariculture industry’s carrying capacity for cage, shellfish, macroalgae, etc; it also points out the key technologies behind capacity evaluation, including the index system of ecological capacity assessment, the numerical model of individual growth of cultured organisms, the coupling of hydrodynamic processes and ecological models; Furthermore, this article analyzes the role of carrying capacity in determining the current population density of maricultural farms and optimizing the layout of the mariculture operations, expanding the maricultural farming space and building a new mode of maricultural farming. And then, this paper advanced three suggestions for developing a capacity evaluation system in aquaculture waters, including establishing the long-term monitoring experimental station of the offshore aquaculture structure, culture capacity assessment, setting up research initiatives for aquaculture capacity research, and identifying the layout and structural adjustment for establishing a ecosystem management strategy.

Polar Animal Genetic Resources: Current Situation and Development Strategies

Chen Songlin, Xu Wenteng, Chen Zhangfan

Strategic Study of CAE 2019, Volume 21, Issue 6,   Pages 39-47 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2019.06.007

Abstract:

This article has reviewed the current status of polar animal genetic resources and proposed the development strategies based on existing problems. Genome sequencing of polar animals started late, and the whole genome sequencing has been conducted so far on only 13 polar animals. Transcriptome sequencing has been carried out for 31 polar animals in recent years, and the transcriptome research has focused on adaption to polar environments, molecular mechanisms in response to pollutant stresses, transcriptome changes during various development stages or within different tissues, and exploitation of functional genes. The late initiation in the study of polar animal genetic resources limited its current depth and width in research. However, this study is strategically important. We suggest that China set up a key research and development program “exploration and application of biological gene resources in polar animals” to support the work in this field, and focus on genetic dissection of special traits, functional analysis of specific genes, and development of genetically engineered products.
