Development Status and Prospects of Microbial Manufacturing Industry in China

Abstract:

The microbial manufacturing industry is developing rapidly in China owing to the policy of “green production, energy saving, and emission reduction”. This industry involves agriculture, food, energy, chemical, and other fields and generates great economic benefits and social values. In this article, we describe the development trend of the global microbial manufacturing industry, summarize the development status of China’s microbial manufacturing industry in the fields of fermented food, biological fertilizer, enzyme preparation, bio-based material, and biomass energy, and analyze the opportunities and challenges of the industry in China. The research technology of China’s microbial manufacturing industry is constantly reforming and innovating, the production level of some major fermentation industries ranks among the top in the world, new strains and products continue to increase, and the scale of industrial production is gradually expanding. However, China’s microbial manufacturing industry still lacks independence regarding core strains, cutting-edge scientific research technologies, and key production equipment. Moreover, we suggest that China’s microbial manufacturing industry should improve its independent research and development capabilities, strengthen cross-industry innovation, develop intelligent equipment for industrial production, and accelerate the transformation of scientific research results.

Study on Development Strategy for Blue Marine Living Resources

Abstract:

To improve China's development capacity of living marine resources and promote the construction of its maritime power, the Chinese Academy of Engineering launched a major consultation project in 2011, which is called "Strategic Study on the Development of China Living Marine Resources Engineering and Technology". By consultation and investigation in five key areas including mariculture, maritime resources conservation, deep sea fishery, seafood quality safety processing and logistics, marine medicine and bio-product, this study systematically analyzes the current state and strategic demands of these areas. It also advances three development strategies namely conservation, expansion and high-technology, for multi-dimensional developing and utilizing living marine resources. Three strategic objectives and tasks for advancing blue marine bio-industry were proposed, including sustainability, safety and modern engineering. The study recommended that the China should prioritize initiating two key researchand development programs: the Blue Marine Food Development Project and the Key Technology Development Project for Blue Marine Medicine and Bio-product.

Rise of the Liquid Metal Science, Technology and Industry: Advancements and Opportunities

Abstract:

The room temperature liquid metal and its allied materials are a class of emerging functional matters with diverse species. Recently, with breakthrough discoveries made on liquid metals, tremendous exciting applications were raised and many new materials that had never been anticipated before were invented. As a result, the latest achievements on liquid metals were ascribed as the second revolution of human beings over the process of utilizing metals. This article briefly summarized typical advancements, fundamental sciences, and key technological and industrial areas thus initiated which include but are not limited to: chip cooling and energy utilization, printed electronics and 3D printing, biomedical materials, as well as smart soft machines. In addition, historic background to propose and establish “The China Liquid Metal Valley” and the basic strategy to mold a brand new industry of liquid metal were outlined. The core values to strengthen future research on liquid metal material genome engineering and thus build up corresponding databases were summarized. Overall, liquid metals are important frontiers for science, technology, and industry integrating both fundamental and practical issues together. Further continuous endeavors would lead to pivotal progress of human civilization and thus reshape social production and lifestyle. Its impact for both China and the world to explore next generation revolutionary science, technology, and industry will be huge.

The Exploitation and Development of New Field for Agricultural Science and Technology in 21st Century

Abstract:

In this article, based on the analysis of the challenge by the knowledge economy to China´s social and economic development, the author points out that knowledge economy can texit and develop without the stable support by agriculture, only when the modernization of agriculture, industry and infrastructure realized can we enter the knowledge society smoothly. The total level and subsistent problems of agricultural science and technology are discussed, the basic tasks that the innovative system for agricultural knowledge should undertake are also studied. The author believes that information and biology technology will be the two fundamental dustries in 21st century, the prospect and trend of their application in agriculture are also described. The author anticipates that the rapid development and intensive use of biology technology in agriculture will inaugurate 6 new fields for the research work of agricultural science and technology, which include the creation of new species, the application of the new fast breeding technology, the establishment of agricultural factory, the producing of new man-made food and feed, the exploitation for new energy and the searching for new space.

Prospects for Engineering Science and Technology Development Strategy Research in China

Abstract:

China's engineering science and technology development strategy research is a common project organized by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The purposes of this research are to build a high-level national engineering science and technology think tank, to build a Chinese science and technology planning platform, and to develop science and technology planning in a manner that suits the Chinese national condition. This paper describes the Chinese level of science and technology to 2035, using top-level design and two operating systems (an administrative line system to ensure the efficiency of the strategy research, and a technical line system to ensure the quality of the strategy research) in order to achieve the desired results.

As the largest in the world by far,the Three Gorges Project (TGP )is a multipurpose development and comprehensive utilization project that can bring a huge benefit by combining flood control, electric prowler generation and shipping. It is of large scale and technically complex. This paper expounds a large number of major technical problems that has been,and will be, solved in the construction of the project, and points out that the solution of these problems will be an important urge to the development of both water conservancy and hydraulic power generation science and technology.

Abstract:

The world recent activities in the fields of micro-algae biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol and biogasoline were reviewed; the challenges and measures taken were discussed. It was proposed that the first industrial demonstration unit for these micro-algae biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol and biogasoline should be built in China before 2015, based on raw material supply, R & D progress and international cooperation to lay the foundation for future development.
